It was an eventful day in Piers Morgan news world. After hitting a ratings and an all-around low for his interview with the Kardashian sisters last week, it became clear that Morgan should be going for better guests. His producers agree, hiring a new booker, 15-year ABC News veteran Katie Thompson who worked primarily with Barbara Walters, including on her 1999 interview with Monica Lewinsky.
Speaking of Barbara Walters and guests on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, former guest Howard Stern, who delivered Morgan’s biggest demo ratings to date, took a shot at the British host on his radio show today. “Stop going around bragging like you’re gonna be the next Barbara Walters, or something,” he said. “I like the guy, but he’s gotta really wise up. Dude, you’re in a whole new f**king ballgame … you’re on CNN, in America – welcome to the war.”
Meanwhile, the final ratings for last week are in, and Piers Morgan finished 3rd (978,000 viewers; 279,000 in 25-54) behind leader, Fox News’ Sean Hannity (2.1 million; 525,000), and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (1.1 million; 283,000). And with the whole hoopla about “kicking Fox News’ butt”, CNN is pretty much where it was a year ago when Larry King drew almost identical ratings to Morgan in the same 9 PM slot: 989,000 viewers and 290,000 in 25-54.

He routinely asked the most stupid questions, and obviously had no idea who he was talking to – they were just sat down across from him

I really like Piers Morgan. But, I have to say he does not interview very well. Its very very annoying to watch when he continues to interrupt the person or people he is interviewing before they can finish the answer to the question he asked. He just cant relax and carry on a conversation. Maybe practice will help. Hope so, before its too late and his new show goes down the drain.
I totally agree. Morgan is rude! His guests are cut off in the middle of a sentence when he interrupts with a totally new question. I was hoping that Queen Noor would smack him!
Morgan livens up the scene with a wider and more invigorating take on the world outside the often narrower American view. Congratulations CNN for stepping out of your conventional box. King was good too of course in his own way.

Because they don’t kiss peoples asses, and don’t care who they piss of. Which is why they do good radio. Unlike Howie who like a queen, sits in his throne while everyone around him wipes his ass and gives him a perm. I’d rather hear good radio than see O&A on his shitty CNN show. They are millionaires anyways. at the end of the day why would they even give a fuck?
The quality of the overall show is pretty good, and this is a big step up from Larry King.

During his interview Stern also predicted Piers would fire his booker within 2 weeks. FA FA FOOEY!
I think Howard’s prediction was more like 3 months.
The public has a much shorter attention span and the talk show world is a brutal one…

I’ve never seen a guy so ill-suited to a job than this yahoo. It’s painful to watch him try to express a thought. He’s so empty headed, but we did find out he believes in heaven! Dump him, CNN and give the gig to Soledad O’Brien who should have been your first choice.
It’s shocking to see how really stooooopid this guy is. And to think he is covering American and world affairs. He can barely get out a thought. Yeehawww, CNN’s biggest error ever. Even worse than Spitzer.
They don’t make “stars” anymore. He, Barbara and Oprah are going to have trouble getting interviews that are compelling because the “celebs” today are not compelling. Maybe he should turn to the old stars like Mickey Rooney or Ernest Borgnine, who come from an era where they tell stories and make pictures. I mean, who wants to watch the Kardashians? Geez!

I think the problem is no one likes Piers Morgan. But no one bothered to ask us before they put him in such an important slot. Change your staff and format all you want, it’s not going to make him popular.
Katie T is an incredible booker (and nobody’s pointed out she worked for LARRY KING LIVE in the ’90s, back when Larry was scoring big gets regularly, and the BBC before that).
But she’s got her work cut out for her here. When you put on five shows a week you need an incredible volume of big gets; Barbara Walters is on about five times a YEAR. There aren’t that many Howard Sterns. Inevitably Piers is going to have some Kardashian nights along the way. He should shut up about planning to book one major world leader per week.
The bigger problem is Piers himself: smug, self-interested, prickly, pompous, out of sync with American rhythms. The very definition of a talent who doesn’t wear well… the anti-Carson. Katie can deliver the Pope drumming with Blue Man Group, but a lot of people won’t watch because they can’t stand Piers.
CNN obviously did all the same pre-testing with Piers they did with Parker Spitzer, e.g. none. Poor Ken Jautz, having to stick with this stupid decision.
Meanwhile, in a booth at Nate and Al’s, Larry is cackling into his matzoh brei.

Piers biggest problem is Piers. The audience doesn’t find him engaging nor do they find him compelling. In fact, I believe America has stopped finding him at all. It’s only a matter of time.
Piers Morgan needs the booker for Jerry Springer. In so doing, he can then have guests more suited to his skill level.

I have no opinion of Olbermann, but Piers should definitely be cancelled. The only reason CNN won’t do that right away is that they need to save face. But really, I think that if they brought in Olbermann, they would already have a built in fan base of supporters. And it can’t and wouldn’t be any worse than Piers.
GREAT IDEA! But i’m sure there’s a year long “non compete” clause built into Keith’s severance. But you are right ON here!!! If only CNN had any balls they would listen to you. Parker Spitzer, Piers Morgan, even Anderson Cooper– what a league of losers.
I don’t quite understand all the hate for Parker Spitzer. I mean, as a show it’s mediocre, I guess, but Spitzer really is a brilliant guy, and honestly I am interested in what he thinks and has to say.
Anderson Cooper I’ve had mixed opinions about in the past, but I’ve got to say his coverage of Cairo has been great. Anderson is wedded to a particular narrative, yes, but I think (1) that’s probably unavoidable; and (2) he’s got it mostly right, in any event. And the coverage just grabs you and won’t let go. Good stuff.
Piers – its over so soon.
CNN, please come to your senses and cancel this embarrassing show now, and take Parker Spitzer with it. Time to go back to the drawing board on those two hours.
I agree, cancel parker/spitzer and piers morgan. I no longer watch cnn in the evening. I still tune into anderson cooper every now and then but he too has lost my viewership. I do not know, who to recommend as replacements for these shows.
He got the Kardashians to talk about their boobs. I think he was channeling Howard Stern for a moment. But Stern’s correct – check back in a few months and see who’s showing up. Rejects from The View.
After I saw the Kardashian’s interview, and watched in amazement how shallow and empty the whole show was, I’ve decided to not give this guy another chance. Did anyone else see it? How can anybody watch this trash.
Poor clueless CNN… Because of their inflated egos, neither CNN nor Morgan will admit defeat. But this was a disaster straight out the gate. First of all, between Hannity, Maddow, and tubby-chubby Morgan, I’d rather watch bleeding Egyptians than that double chinned, arrogant Brit any night of the week. And his “Don’t you know who I am?!” attitude is getting older by the minute. IF he actually WERE someone of relevance to any demo in America, I could see the network taking the gamble. But this guy is just WRONG in every way for Larry’s spot. Give him a day show, or fluff pieces on the news– dont throw him to the prime-time lions! Come on CNN! Instead of a fat pale stuffy Brit, CNN needed to fill the spot with a YOUNG HOT SEXY version of Bill Maher– someone with something to say! This is the age of American discontent… capitalize on it CNN! Everyone else is! Between those two queens– chubby Piers and pale Anderson– CNN might as well just go off the air for two hours a night. Whoever is their programming head at CNN needs to BE FIRED.

I think Piers is doing a great job I wasn’t sure what to expect but I like him!! I agree I’m not into morons like the Kardasians come on so much you can take of them.And for Howard Stern what a royal jerk quite full of his boring self.
