When Endeavor took over the William Morris Agency, one of the upstart agency’s brilliant founding partners Tom Strickler departed. He had been expected by everyone, including Ari Emanuel, to join the combined company even though the motion picture lit agent had vociferously argued against Endeavor changing from David into Goliath. So it came as a shock when he announced his resignation just before Endeavor voted on the merger. As a result, that vote was unanimous. Since then, a week doesn’t go by when someone doesn’t email me asking to know what Tom is doing. Here’s the answer in an email he sent around to friends today. It’s, in a word, inspiring. It also should remind Hollywood players who find themselves at a voluntary or involuntary career crossroads that following a different path can be just as rewarding — and maybe more so:

Subject: Good NewsI am happy to report that this afternoon at 3:40 PM, the Los Angeles Unified School District voted to grant a charter to Extera Public Schools.
Classes begin on August 15th with 264 students (K – 3) in Boyle Heights – an area of our city burdened by great poverty and failing schools. Although getting a charter is a challenge, it pales in comparison to the challenge of building a great school. We are looking forward to all the hard work that lies ahead.
I am deeply grateful to my family and friends who have been so enthusiastic and supportive of this new endeavor. And I am deeply appreciative of all the educational leaders from around the country who gave freely of their time and wisdom. We never found a door that was closed to us. I am most amazed by Jim Kennedy, our CEO, whose hard work and commitment to excellence got us to the finish line. And am equally thankful for the Extera Board – who gave generously of their time and resources.
When I set out on my journey into public education, it was with a simple goal. To help 10,000 disadvantaged kids get a first class education and an opportunity for a better life. Admittedly, the 264 kids at Extera is a far cry from 10,000. But it is a beginning.
9736 kids to go!
Onwards.

Wow – what a great and uplifting thing to read. Inspiring and moving.
Good for Tom
What a great story! I worked with him (pre-Endeavor) and reading this was just lovely. Best of luck to Tom and all those kids in Boyle Heights, much success to them all.
Great story Nikki. Nice to see you ground all the bs in town to a heartfelt reality.
Kiss up!
And here I figured he was sunning himself on some beach in Vietnam, laughing at all of us…
Way to go, Tom — giving BACK to the children.
Well Played Tom
Tom signed me to Endeavor and I’ve never met anyone smarter or more straightforward.
I’d heard rumors of what he’d been up to and I just got this email. Fuckin’ A, Tom. Fuckin’ A.
Dear Tom,
How cool. Well done.
And, doesn’t this feel good?
This is, indeed, his new endeavor.
It’s what life is all about. Doing God’s work.
Strickler could not have been more right about the merger. That place is an absolute mess and everyone there is miserable. Endeavor was much more powerful and respected pre-merger.
Tom was always one of the most independent and BS-free agents around. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s figured out something else to do with his talents and intellect– he never quite fit in to Hollywood culture, which I mean as a compliment.
When he is done with this mission I’m sure many more than 10,000 children will be given this chance at a better education.
This is really cool, thank you for sharing.
This is awesome. Tom, we all miss your energy in the biz…and even though no one reads the comments, I hope you see this when I say I am SO happy that you are doing this for the kids. Pretty damn inspirational.
Rock on.
Wow…Frankly I’m surprised to not see any malcontents anonymously tossing dirt at the man.
Reading this was a joy.
Life really DOES exist outside of Hollywood!
Tom is a great guy. He was one of the good guys at Endeavor.
Glad to hear he landed on his feet and is running.
Hooray for Tom!
Looks like someone’s making up for that bullshit “Diamond Bar” piece earlier today.
Well said, well said…but this is a very nice story. Life outside of Hollywood? Who knew?
Great play on words when he states thanks to his friends for being “supportive of this new endeavor”! I love it! See? Good things CAN happen.
Just as long as he doesn’t use the experience to write a TV show or Film, altruism will be very rewarding!
SHOWBIZ…GOTTA LIVE IT!
Look, let’s face it, being chairman of the board of a charter school is just like being an agent: you shamelessly beg for a lot of favors and money because you believe in what you are pushing. Selling is addictive (I know, I’m addicted to it also), but it’s nice to read about someone who realized his satisfaction was derived from the selling itself and chose to utilize those skills for something that really mattered (now that he’s made all his money and doesn’t even have to work anymore).
Indeed inspiring! Tom was my next door neighbor for years, and always a super cool guy. I never had more respect for him than the day I read he was leaving the “biz” to embark on charitable efforts. Something many of us don’t have the guts to do…Kudos!
very inspirational story… Ricardo Mestres former head of Hollywood Pictures also shifted careers a number of years ago and went to medical school after tragically loosing his your daughter to a rare disease…he is now Dr. Ricardo Mestres!
Funny that you posted this, I’m good friends with Dr. Mestres’ son, and the few times that I’ve met him, I was struck by what a friendly man he was, not to mention the palpable positive energy that surrounds him. His son, Alex, is considerate, hard-working, and generous, I’m glad to know him. People like Ricardo and Tom have chosen to live a life of achievement that would impress Da Vinci, channeling their power directly into the lives that need it the most; the critically ill and those intellectually abandoned school-children that, thanks to these gentleman and their families, will get the opportunity and, most importantly, the inspiration to live so well, for others…
