French actress Maria Schneider, who ultimately came to disdain her most famous role as Marlon Brando’s young and sexy lover in Last Tango In Paris, has died this morning after a long illness. She was 58. According to news reports, French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand called Schneider “a great artist”. The daughter of French actor Daniel Gelin and a Parisian bookshop owner, Schneider was only 19 when she was cast opposite the 48-year-old Brando in 1972′s Last Tango In Paris which caused controversy for its full-body sexual content. Afterwards, the actress made no secret of her dislike for having been “manipulated” into making the movie and vowed not to appear in a nude scene ever again. Although Schneider appeared opposite Jack Nicholson in The Passenger in 1975, and in Jane Eyre in 1996, her subsequent acting career consisted mostly of low-budget European films.

Rest in Peace. A fine actress, a pretty lady
Rest in Peace, Maria.
She was a beautiful woman. Its a shame now that most actresses in pornography in mainstream film and now in our everyday lives shave pubic hair. Its absolutely ridiculous. Pubic hair is a sign of sexual maturity and should be cherished. If you do shave you are obviously not mature enough to see the beauty or you have a spouse that likes little girls and asks you to shave.
a great actress. RIP.
Last Tango’s one of the greatest movies ever, a masterpiece from maestro Bertolucci. RIP.
As they said on Hill Street Blues. Let’s take care of ourselves.
RIP, sweet thing.
As someone in the same age group 58 is too young especially when I think back to her very youthful character in Last Tango. Sad that she had regrets about the film. For most people this side of the Atlantic that is what we know her for. Anyway, RIP. You were the epitome of Gallic beauty.
She was a beautiful and great actress. The funny thing is that while you wanted to watch the movie for her beauty, you remember her overall performance of a character led (manipulated) into an unusual relationship. Maria was lucky enough to create such an unforgettable character, and continue what I hope for her was a satisfying career.
Maria was wonderful in The Passenger. Pretty and talented.
She went toe to toe with Brando and Bertolucci in their most brilliantly sadistic primes.
It seemed to have taken so much from her that she never really recovered, but that was the trade off she probably didn’t realize she was making. Now we have her for forever.
Thank you, Maria. You were unforgettable as the vision of youth become woman, and you will live on as long as movies do.
The smartest-funnyest most loyal friend!!!

My friend, brilliant, funny, troubled & ground breaking. A high point in my life. I will always cherish you, Lucy and Joey. I will never forget you. Join Jean Jacques in eternal peace & rest.
LAST TANGO IN PARIS is watching genuine mental breakdowns. Not “like watching,” it IS watching people coming apart. Brando cracked up making it, and it looks like everyone else followed him on that trip. A ground-breaking–if painful–film to watch.
And Maria was at ground zero and held her own! Rest in peace.
