Fox’s hourlong American Idol (8.9/24 in adults 18-49, 24.9 million) once again held steady, down 3% in the demo from last Wednesday’s two-hour episode and up 3% vs. that episode’s comparable 8-9 PM hour. What is probably even more important for Fox is that, while Idol started off down by double digits from its last season, it has now pulled even. Compared to last year’s third Tuesday episode, last night’s show was flat in 18-49 and up 2% in viewers. If only the 8-9 PM hour of last year’s episode is counted, last night’s 8-9 PM episode was slightly up.
Following its surprisingly strong performance on Monday, Human Target disappointed last night despite posting its best numbers in a year, 2.6/7 in 18-49. That was up from the 2.1 rating the show pulled on Monday at 8 PM but it had no lead-in there and the largest possible lead-in, Idol, last night. Then again, scripted shows don’t do well behind Idol. Still, in its first airing after Idol on Thursday, Bones averaged a so-so 46% retention. Human Target‘s was 29%.
In a rare occurrence this season, it was all good news for NBC last night. A two-hour Minute To Win It (2.4/6) was up a whopping 71% from its hourlong edition last week, while Law & Order: SVU (2.9/8) was up 26% vs. its last original 2 weeks ago. Minute grew steadily throughout the two hours and set a season high for NBC in the 9 PM hour (3.0).
SVU was the dominant player in the demo at 10 PM, with ABC’s Off the Map (1.8/5) flat with last week’s series low and CBS’ Blue Bloods (1.6/5) dropping an alarmingly 20% from last week when it aired after an original Criminal Minds vs. a repeat last night. The cop drama starring Tom Selleck tied its lowest demo rating ever. CBS had a rough night all around, with Live To Dance (1.0/3) barely registering against Idol, flat with last week’s series low.
Good news for ABC’s Cougar Town. After last week’s season low, the mini-finale (Cougar Town goes on hiatus to make room for new comedy Mr. Sunshine) of the series starring Courtney Cox posted a 2.7/7 in 18-49, up 35% from last week. It was a clean ratings bump as both weeks, Cougar Town‘s lead-in was a repeat of Modern Family.

Are you kidding me?? Blue Bloods had the 2nd highest total viewer rating of all shows on all networks. NBC should be so lucky as to have an 10pm show win an 11.7 rating.
Overall ratings don’t mean much these days, it’s all about the 18 – 49 demo, advertisers don’t like selling stuff to the older demo for some reason. But yeah, Blue Bloods was one of the lowest rated shows last night for what matters.
NBC has a similar situation with Harry’s Law which pulls 11m viewers overall (Mondays @ 10) but only gets a 2.1 share 18 – 49 (which is still pretty good for NBC).
@WR Please do learn how to read a ratings release.
Blue Bloods had 11.7 million total viewers, not a rating of 11.7. (The real total is 11.2 million.) That’s viewers 2 and older. It’s a nearly meaningless statistic. The number that advertisers care about the most is Adults 18-49, commonly referred to as the demo. That number is expressed as a percentage. So, Blue Bloods delivered a rating against A18-49 of 1.6. Meaning 1.6% of all A18-49 in the US were watching Blue Bloods last night. Share was around 5, or 5% of all the A18-49 who were watching TV during the time Blue Bloods was on the air were watching Blue Bloods. mmKay?
Some advertisers are interested in Upscale viewers, which is why Harry’s Law is considered to be a hit for NBC, especially given their current performance.
Over at the Human Target board they are already debating the next role for Mark Valley – with Jack Reacher getting the most votes. Poor HT. Textbook case of when something works dont fix it.
Elle, you must be a woman with ulterior motives because most of what I saw on the Human Target community board were fans wanting Human Target to return for more seasons.

Human Target has been ‘must-watch TV’ for me. Sigh.
The ratings bump for many of those shows could be attributed to the blizzard in 1/3 of the nation. Being stuck inside, people see little choice but to watch tv.
Human Target was awesome last night! Can’t wait until next week’s finale. I love the addition of Ilsa on Human Target. She was in two Bones episodes, “Yanks in the UK Part 1 & 2?. I thinks she’s sexy and mysterious.
American Idol is now unwatchable.
One (just one of many) of the reasons being the insistence of contestants to fawn all over Jennifah Lopez, telling her how beautiful and inspiring she is. They tell them to say that, right?
Yuck.
And poor Steven Tyler, who is a TRUE legend, having to sit there and watch this no-talent, giant ego diva get her massive ass kissed ad nauseum.
The show is dead. Bury it.
Last week BONES had over 12 millions viewers.
Seriously? “Best numbers in a year” is a disappointment? I surely can’t be the only TARGET fan who wouldn’t be caught dead watching IDOL or any of those other imbecilic competition shows. The concept of people staying with one network all evening despite the programming may have been acceptable back in the old days before remote controls, but today even the laziest couch potato can rouse himself to switch channels at the top of the hour. I have no problem going from HOUSE to 2 1/2 MEN/MIKE & MOLLY to CASTLE (and now recording HARRY’S LAW), and I know I’m not alone.
TARGET’s not only up in its regular slot, but it beat the Monday airing, where it presumably picked up some new viewers. There’s no downside there, especially for a bubble show.
