EXCLUSIVE: Home Game has won the Rob Riggle sweepstakes. Riggle is set to star in the CBS multicamera comedy, from Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson’s Leverage. The project, loosely based on the experiences of former NFL star Mark Schlereth, centers on Mark (Riggle), a retired NFL player who returns home to his wife Lisa (Constance Zimmer) and daughters.
Finding a starring vehicle for the former Daily Show correspondent has been a big priority for CBS, which in the fall inked a third consecutive talent deal with him. Riggle was initially attached to a comedy from Saturday Night veteran Robert Smigel. When that project didn’t go to pilot, the network sent him 3 other scripts, including Home Game. With his background as a Marine where he was often deployed and his current profession as an actor where he goes away for filming and touring, Riggle immediately connected with the character in Home Game who is back with his family after years of playing with the pros. Also key for Riggle’s decision to go with Home Game was his relationship with Wahlberg. The two had worked together in the movie The Other Guys and Wahlberg reached out to Riggle who had been the producers’ first and only choice for the role.
Home Game, from CBS TV Studios, was written by Warren Bell and Chris Nowak. Bell, Wahlberg and Levinson executive produce along with Riggle’s managers Peter Principato and Paul Young, with Nowak serving as a co-executive producer and Riggle and Leverage’s Peter Sussman as producers. Also serving as producers are NFL player-turned-sportscaster Schlereth, his wife Lisa and his daughter, actress Alexandria Schlereth.

Wow, that is going no where !
POW!
I will watch anything with Rob Riggle. Best of luck!
“Finding a starring vehicle for the former Daily Show correspondent has been a big priority for CBS”
Er, for the love of God, WHY???
Sounds like a fantastic opportunity for you! Been a big fan of yours since The Daily Show. Best wishes!
Wow, could they have more producers? Can I be a producer, along with my daughter, manager, and mother in law? Great, now let’s all give notes! Gyugh.
He’s always reminded me of the obnoxious drunk guy who likes to “do skits” at family reunions. Why he has any talent holding deal, let alone three of them, is beyond me.
I don’t get this Riggle guy at all. He’s just irritating.
At first I thought this had zero chance until I realized that among the ELEVEN producers are an ex-football player, his wife, and 20ish daughter. Now I can’t wait!
Amazed at how many people are so bitter and think they have the right to “judge” talent. Eh.
How many pilots is CBS going to film w/ Riggle as the lead? That’s the problem. He’s not a LEAD. He’s talented as an ensemble player but he doesn’t have the acting chops to be a lead.
I read the pilot. It’s got heart, it’s interesting (not silly), and lots of good laughs. I can see this one catching. Kudos on excellent casting. First of all, to have Riggle, fantastic. But to also have Constance Zimmer? Inspired. Good luck with it.
If Gavin Polone or someone who knows him here: what he and the Dave Becky type folks should be doing for all of the Conan/UCB people is getting someone to hold a workshop on how turn an interesting life into a pilot script.
I think that Riggle is great, smart, kind, wonderful guy, but the fundamental problem with the description of this series is that Riggle’s actual life is so much more interesting than this series. Maybe he’s nervous about dealing directly with his actual life (such as being in Afghanistan and helping get debris out of the World Trade Center right after 9/11), but it seems as if there ought to be a way to make a modern version, say, of M*A*S*H, or Gomer Pyle, that would be far enough from his life not to cause emotional pain but close enough to draw energy from what’s he seen and done.
I can’t wait for this reboot of Evening Shade!
Kudos!
