UPDATE: Relativity confirmed they’ve signed Julia Roberts, and have set a June 29, 2012 release date. That puts The Brothers Grimm: Snow White six months ahead of the preliminary release plan for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Relativity Media’s press release is at bottom of the story.
EARLIER 9:33 AM: Deadline revealed late last year that Julia Roberts was being courted by Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media to play the Evil Queen in the Tarsem Singh-directed The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. I’m told that the deal will close within two hours, with the talks basically down to “whether Julia gets a Town Car or an SUV.”
Committing to Roberts means that neither Relativity Media or Universal Pictures is blinking on the race to mount rival Snow White pictures for 2012 release. Universal has set a December 21, 2012 release date for the Rupert Sanders-directed Snow White and the Huntsman, which has come together strongly with Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen playing the title characters, and Charlize Theron playing the Evil Queen. Usually, rival picture races end when one project either lands a big star or makes it into production first. That’s happened on such films as the Oliver Stone-directed Alexander, which ended the Alexander the Great film Baz Luhrmann was prepping with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Relativity Media might get into production before Universal’s planned summer start, with pre-production underway and shooting to begin possibly as soon as next month, insiders said. Landing Roberts is also a big play for Kavanaugh, who stepped into The Fighter when many of the elements were in place. Here, he got a project from scratch and is taking his biggest shot with an internationally bankable superstar. It comes at a time when The Fighter has a puncher’s chance for Best Picture, and as Kavanaugh mounts tent pole-size movies like the Henry Cavill-starrer Immortals and the Biblical tale Goliath. All this seems to be leading Relativity Media to an inevitable IPO.
(Beverly Hills, CA) February 8, 2011 – Relativity Media has closed a deal with Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts to play the Queen in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell).
Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in April. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012.
Relativity’s Snow White, a retelling of one of the most beloved fables of all-time, will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers. The script was written by Melissa Wallack (Meet Bill) and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher).
The film’s producers are Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter), Bernie Goldmann (300) and Brett Ratner (Rush Hour franchise). The executive producers are Tucker Tooley (The Fighter), Jeff Waxman (Immortals), Tommy Turtle (Immortals), Jamie Marshall (Immortals), Josh Pate (Friday Night Lights) and John Cheng (Horrible Bosses).
Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh commented, “Julia was our first and only choice to play the Queen. She is an icon, and we know that she will make this role her own in a way that no one else could.”
Relativity currently has Golden Globe®-winner and seven-time Oscar®-nominee The Fighter in theatres, via Paramount Pictures, starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams as well as Golden Globe®-winner and eight-time Oscar®-nominee The Social Network via its partnership with Sony Pictures. Relativity’s 2011 slate also includes current release Season of the Witch starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman. The hilarious Take Me Home Tonight debuts on March 4th starring Topher Grace and Anna Faris. Following on March 18th, is the much-anticipated Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish and Oscar®-winner Robert De Niro. Relativity recently announced its acquisition of the Untitled David R. Ellis 3D Shark Thriller which will release in theatres on September 2nd. Finally on November 11th, 2011 is Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke.

This is a terrible idea!!! Julia Roberts play evil???? THis is typical hollywood casting. No one under 30 cares about Julia Roberts. I think Charlize is so much sexier and better. Julia must really need some money to work for Tarsem.
I agree. She can’t act. Have you seen her in “Eat Pray Love”. She was horrible. Or maybe she is a evil queen. she’ll bore you to death.
If you want to blame someone for the shitshow that was Eat Pray Love, the main person at fault for that unwatchable music video was director Ryan Murphy. Jury’s still out on Roberts.
I wouldn’t say she can’t act though he was pretty atrocious in that eatpraywhatever film. You could see she just couldn’t give a f* about it and did not even bother trying.
Isn’t he directing Glee also?
Charlize is perfect but also a death knell for no other actress is more beautiful. Kristen is very pretty in her own right but no match to Charlize. And SW is supposedly the most beautiful. So with Charlize as EQ, Houston has a problem.
For no other actress is more beautiful?!? Really? Charlize has a Hollywood lip job, over-processed bleached fugly hair and over-plucked eyebrows. Not very bright plus she seems stoned. And, no, I do not care that she is an Academy Award Winning actress. She is HIGH-ly over-rated and no great beauty. Oh, golly and gosh, Julia must feel utterly doggy next to Charlize. NOT!
Are you kidding nickson? Charlize does not have a lip job. Where do you get that from? Her lips are not that big or fake looking and they have always looked like that. And she is a great beauty. Her beauty is in the class with old hollywood stars. If she were around back in the old days, she would be an even bigger star. Someone sounds jealous or has bad eyesight. LOL!
Not jealous at all. She does have fake lips. Hollywood lip job du jour. Didn’t have those lips when she acted opposite Hatcher and Horton in whatever in The Valley. How many days was it? Anyway. Seriously. She is no great beauty. Just another dime a dozen over-processed blonde. And oh so STONE-y it seems. She is a great animal activist. Admire her for that. Just not big on her.
Hey, Nickson, 1992 called and wants it’s NOT! back.
NOT sure I’m willing to give it back. Will consider and get back to you. NOT. LOL. Articulate.
watch CLOSER and then say she doesn’t have a dark side. she’ll do great!
Would love to see Relativity get an IPO. Then, the books will be open for everyone to inspect.
Relativity may be a kite. They may not have a reliable Black-Scholes type formula for picking projects. But be thankful for anyone who can drag money out of the transactional economy and into the picture business.
Team Julia!
I will not see this movie for the simple fact that Kristen Stewart has NO talent. She doesn’t deserve to be cast alongside that much greatness.
Wrong movie. Kristen Stewart is in the other one
Yeah! You got your bad re-imagined fairytales wrong, there’s THREE of them in the works, but you should skip this one too, I’ve never seen a film where Julia Roberts put on an unforgettable performance, she’s a kind person with a lot of connections, and a perfect smile, I just don’t think she’s any better than Megan Fox as an actress.
I don’t know how “kind” a person she is, since I remember well her “A Low Vera” stunt. But I agree she is nothing more than a mediocre actress — at best. Can’t imagine a scenario where I would pay to see her in a film.
What is the third Snow White?
Some animated movie based in Hong Kong if you can believe it!
Hmm…I’ll take the Viggo/Kristen/Charlize movie over this one. And Charlize>Julia for the Evil Queen.
This version of SW doesn’t have Kristen in it. The role of SW hasn’t even been cast yet in this one but it looks like it is winning the race to get started which is good.
Team Universal!
The casting of Viggo, Charlize and Kristen seems like they tried to think outside the box. All very good actors. Hope this one gets made.
I can’t stand Snow White. But if I were to see any of them, it would be SWatH. Charlize as the Queen is A+ casting . And I could easily see Kristen and Viggo in the title roles. The also wrote SW as a badass, so much better than the weaking in Disney’s SW.
Team SUV!
Team electric car???
Ugh Julia Roberts…
Ugh 3 Snow White movies…
Still if any one gets made I hope it’s the Charlize Theron one. Love her.
Eh, gonna have to say I prefer Charlize Theron in the ice queen role over Julia. Plus Universal has Viggo Mortenson and Kristen Stewart on board. So unless, Relativity gets someoneelse besides Julia on this, gonna go with the Universal one.
But still, why is everyone all of a sudden obsessed with Snow White?
Since “Alice in Wonderland” hit it big, the studios are scrambling to get more fairy tale movies out to capitalize on it. Hence the two competing SW productions, and the “Oz” prequel.
Whatever happened to all of those Cinderella projects that broke on Deadline and haven’t been heard from again since – what, 7 months ago?
Red Riding Hood and now Hansel and Gretel. H-wood needs new genres to mine.
I think Hollywood Execs are content with being REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE it’s more than likely how they cinch up money from investors.
R.I.P Originality. You are surely missed.
Would much prefer to see Kristen/Viggo/Charlize. I agree that most young people don’t care about Julia Roberts. Kristen and Charlize serve as a bigger draw to guys my age…
“Most young people don’t care about Julia Roberts”…this is why we are suffocated with Kristen Stewart. Who makes these assumptions? I’m young and so far the casting of Roberts is the only thing making me remotely interested in sitting through a Snow White film. Don’t insult me thinking I only find appeal in the most attractive people closest to my age.
LOL! If they start shooting so soon, it’s gonna be a battle with the other Snow White! Cause srsly, the one that gets made first&be shown first is gonna make the most money! Now if they get a sweet, beautiful girl for Snow White… OK, this is actaully getting more&more interesting!!!!!
LOLOLOLOLOLOL at all the Kristen Stewart fans losing their sh*t!!!! You should!!!! Julia’s version is shooting first, so it’ll definetely come out first, sorry Stewart fans, but this IS bad business; my guess? Eventually, Universal will push back the release date into 2013, they’ll want as much distance from Julia’s film as possible; plus, Julia Roberts is a much bigger star worldwide than Charlise, whome I absolutely love! Btw, wasn’t Snow White supposed to be prettier than the Queen? Charlize> Stewart
i was about to say the same thing. its funny now that julia is too “old” or not “hot enough.” wth is with all the team talk? are we in grade school?
I guess I don’t agree with wanting tosee any of these versions, much less any of these actresses
Snow white should be an unknown like Mia was for Alice in wonderland
I can see Charlize or Julia in the evil role, vigo is a mistake as well
Maybe Emma Roberts will get cast as snow white with Julia, and it can stay in the family
Remakes are boring, wont waste my $$ on these
I wanna see the one with Kristen Stewart as Snow White, I really like her movies. She always chooses interesting roles.
LOL
Oh vey.
eeer…oy vey
WTF! loooooooolz! yeah….she is such a great actress LOOOOOLZ!
what about Disney’s takes?
There’s the “Wicked” style story of the Evil Queen that was supposed to star angelina jolie and then the snow white and the ninjas or something like that. Does this mean those are dead?
Angelina Jolie was (is?) being courted to play Maleficent…so that’s a SLEEPING BEAUTY story and not Snow White. No clue about the other project.
I think playing against type might be a great move for her. I’m hoping this will be Julia’s big comeback. Because as a straight male I could not bring myself to go see Eat,Pray,Love.
Can someone please tell me what happened to Julia Robert’s career. She went from Erin Brokovitch to the evil queen. Sad.
Angelina Jolie would make a much more believable Evil Queen.
Primarily because she’s a better actress than both Roberts and Theron, not for the delusional jealous cow ‘team aniston’ reasons of yours, cat lady. Go open those 21 cans of tuna, lame.
We can only hope and pray they will ultimately choose a fresh new unknown to play Snow White. As if there isn’t enough new talent to choose from in Hollywood!!!! So sick of the re-treads…give us something NEW already!!!!
I think I’ll stick to the Viggo version because Charlize Theron is a much better actress than Julia Roberts. Imagine if this version hired Sandra Bullock instead of Theron. That would have been two Snow White movies I would have avoided altogether with the two most overrated actresses.
The Universal one already has a script out and the script sounds good. Does Julia Roberts still have star power?
The Relativity one has had a script in play since June. And it’s better than Snow White and the Huntsman. It’s a race now. May the best version win.
The relativity script is horrible!!!!!
Robert Pattinson fans have already found this thread. Beware.
really? how old are we?
what does that have to do with anything?
A lot! I’ve never seen anything like it, but there’s a group of older women Rob fans that follow Kristen’s career like a damn hawk. It’s so bizarre, but they show up on all Kristen posts denounces anything and everything she does. They are not interested in snow white at all..just an opportunity to bag on Kristen. Childish, yes, weird, yes, but oh sooo true.
Is no one allowed to criticize Julia Roberts or Charlize Theron, or Kristen Stewart.?
How old are you.? Go do your homework,!
monkeys chasing monkeys.
