EXCLUSIVE: Hollywood’s fixation with robots and the undead has fueled a spec package deal that includes underlying rights to the IDW Zombies Vs. Robots. JT Petty has used the Ashley Wood/Chris Ryall-created comic as the basis for a spec script called Inherit the Earth. The film will be a co-production between Platinum Dunes, Circle of Confusion and IDW, and produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs. Ted Adams is exec producer. More than one studio was interested. The film focuses on a young girl who is the last survivor on earth. She is protected by a group of robots from a pack of zombies that are intelligent and evolved. The comic title is unrelated to Cowboys & Aliens, even though it sounds like it could be on the undercard. Transformers director Bay, of course, has more than the requisite experience with robots to turn this into something exceptional. Jonathan Kadin and Hannah Minghella will oversee for Sony. IDW’s title World War Robot is being developed by Jerry Bruckheimer.
CANNES: ‘Jane Got A Gun’ Moving Toward U.S Deal

Should have went the other way. Robots protecting the last human against the zombies.
i read this script, and it’s amazing. and more importantly, you are right, it actually is how it goes down. very happy for this project. and couldn’t be happier about this for Brad Fuller! he always wears the most interesting shirts. he’s a very handsome man.
Ted Adams has IDW on a roll. I hear Locke and Key is a killer pilot and with this and World War Robot, seems like IDW is the hot comics publisher these days.
That’s what they said.
I’ve said this before. As a writer…. I give up.
I hear ya, man….
I am tired of whiny writers. Read the post…deal was motivated by a writer speccing out a take on the comic. If more writers would get creative and take some initiative maybe they would get more done.
Wasn’t involved in this deal so I have no idea what really happened here but regardless, the note stands. Take the initiative, stop waiting around for OWAs, spec out some original work. Your agents will thank you for it.
It better have plenty of robots and zombies in it though!
Great comic, interested to see what they do with this…
Okay, the last survivor is being protected by robots from zombies. Let’s see, if we remove the robots…we have Omega Man and the remake of this with Will Smith.
I guess this can be squeezed in between Transformers 4 or 5 or whatever…or, maybe it could be combined with the remake of The Wizard of Oz… and the munchkins can replace the little robots.
Confused, so is it a JT Petty vehicle called Inherit the Earth or is it simply a completely different take on Zombies vs. Robots?
“The story follows a young girl who is the last survivor on Earth, protected by a group of robots as a pack of zombies that are intelligent and evolved aim to kill her.”
Sounds like great fun.
Michael Bay and Michael Moore are teaming up to do Republicans vs. Democrats. The Republicans are killer robots, the Democrats are killer zombies. At the end the two Michaels attack each other. Bay is a tougher fighter but Moore coule eat him for lunch. Who will win?
This seems like a Non sequitur (I have absolutely no idea what the word means and refuse to look it up, therefore probably your comment is not a Non sequitur, but I feel my IQ went up to an even 50 using the word). If Michael Bay is stronger, Michael Moore would not get the chance to eat him, only infect him into becoming a zombie. Please do not post such silly things in the future. Still, would their fight be in slow mo or stop motion al la Mission Impossible 3 or Chicken Run? That could be cool. Still, stop with the silly comments.
Sounds dopey I know, but the script was really clever and surprisingly good. I’m looking forward to this one.
Hmmmm, a pack of zombies that are intelligent? Zombies by definition are mindless humans lost somewhere between life and death, traditionally linked to Haitian and Brazilian voodoo. Hollywood’s zombies are undead, mindless creatures that crave flesh, especially human flesh! Intelligent zombies are an oxymoron. If they’re intelligent can they really be called zombies as in zombified?
Also who built the robots that are protecting the little girl but failed to protect the rest of the human race? I mean logically speaking, if the technology existed to build robots that could protect a little girl, then that same technology could have been used to build robots that would protect the rest of humanity.
But then skynet would later take over and decide to terminate the inferior humans in a war between the humans and the machines. “Come with me if you want to live!”
Questions, questions, I got a million of `em! Most of them are stupid questions though. Oh well.
Your questions are stupid and don’t deserve any answers but I will attempt to help you. The robots were programmed to kill every living human on the planet except for the little girl. They decided to keep her alive and protect her from the people they killed previously because the little girl has a specific genetic code they need to preserve a nucleus of the human race they will breed new humans to be their slaves the robots will. Once the robots do away with the zombies the little girl will grow up and they will artifically inseminate her to breed robot-people. Why is this so difficult to understand?
So, who does the audience root for, then?
There’s only two things missing with the zombies vs robots plot. 1) In space 2) In 3D
3) Nazis (or some other jackboots)
4) Girls in bikinis
5) Nasty-looking aliens dripping all manner of unhygienic goo from their mouths
1) That’s the sequel.
2) I’m sure they’ll convert it after shooting and it’ll look terrible.
It would be sweet if they somehow tried to replicate Ashley Wood’s artistic look on film using filters, lighting, different film stocks, etc. Who am I kidding all the morons will complain that it would be too hard to follow. They will bitch about it like they did such visually interesting movies like “Grindhouse” or “Man on Fire.” It will be boring.
Love it!
Just please don’t ever introduce the Robots vs Zombies vs Amazons like they did in the comic….
totally killed it.
To Doc Brown:
Wow, you must be a real genius or a troll. Most probably the latter.
Anyway as for myself I never claimed to be a genius, in fact just the opposite but that does not make my questions any less relevant.
Now I have to admit that I haven’t read any of J.T. Woods’ stories and judging this project without having read the story or the script is wrong but nonetheless I do have questions regarding the story line. So I’ve gotta ask a few more questions which I’m sure you will have the answers to, so please continue to enlighten me oh mighty one.
(1) If the robots killed the humans but left the little girl alive so they could resurrect the human race as slaves, why even bother to wipe humans out totally? Why not just enslave the humans after the great humans vs the machines war, like any conquering force would do? Just looking for some logic to the reasoning you’ve given . Also you failed to answer my questions regarding the zombies.
A pack of zombies that are intelligent and evolved? Like I stated, zombies by definition are mindless humans lost somewhere between life and death, traditionally linked to Haitian and Brazilian voodoo. Hollywood’s zombies are undead, mindless creatures that crave flesh, especially human flesh! Intelligent zombies that are evolved are still an oxymoron. So…
(2) Do these zombies crave human flesh or not?
(3) Also as intelligent and evolved zombies wouldn’t they just go to the supermarket to get their flesh? Or… are they even out looking for human flesh to devour?
(4) This question still stands. If they’re intelligent and evolved, can they really be called zombies as in zombified?
(5) If they do desire human flesh to devour, then as intelligent and evolved zombies, wouldn’t they at the very least want to cultivate and breed humans as a food source as opposed to wanting to devour the last human left? Or is that their motivation in the story?
Questions, questions, questions. Like I said, I got a million of `em! Hopefully a genius like yourself has a million answers.
(1) If the robots killed the humans but left the little girl alive so they could resurrect the human race as slaves, why even bother to wipe humans out totally?
The robots don’t kill all the humans. A zombie virus is released (don’t want to spoil how) which causes all humans on earth to zombify, save for the little girl.
The robots protect her while trying to figure out a way to resurrect the human species to fulfill, I guess you could call it, their ‘prime directive’. They are, after all, slaves without masters.
(2) Do these zombies crave human flesh or not?
They do. They hunger for brains of any species. In fact, their leader keeps his minions in line by offering them treats of goat and dog brains.
(3) Also as intelligent and evolved zombies wouldn’t they just go to the supermarket to get their flesh? Or… are they even out looking for human flesh to devour?
The zombies come in levels. From the familiar, braindead variety, to slighty more ‘aware’ soldier zombies, to their evil leader, who for all intents and purposes is technically “dead”, but (won’t spoil how) has managed to keep his mind relatively in tact.
(4) This question still stands. If they’re intelligent and evolved, can they really be called zombies as in zombified?
Depends on your perspective. I just assumed that by “zombies” people mean walking corpses without much of their ‘humanity’. The zombies in this flick fulfill that definition.
(5) If they do desire human flesh to devour, then as intelligent and evolved zombies, wouldn’t they at the very least want to cultivate and breed humans as a food source as opposed to wanting to devour the last human left? Or is that their motivation in the story?
Don’t want to spoil it, but you’re circling around the correct answer.
**My browser is glitching, I apologize if this reply shows up multiple times**
Thanks to:( Don’t Know If Last Post Went Through)
You have answered my questions quite well without being a rude jerk like Doc brown was. I felt being as how I hadn’t read JT Petty’s script or Ashley Woods’ and Chris Ryall’s comic that I shouldn’t stand in judgement of the validity of this project but did have what I felt were valid questions which you answered in a concise and amiable manner and I thank you for that! Now the story is making much more sense in the given context you have provided and I will probably see it at the theater when it’s released.
If the zombies are intelligent and evolved, why not just kill the little girl and let the zombies evolve and replace human beings permanently? If they’re so evolved, what makes them so bad?
Never mind. Obviously, I don’t get it. When is Robotech coming out??
Next up: Cowboys vs. Aliens vs. Zombies vs. Lincoln vs. Jane Austen (the last played by Helen Mirren of course)
I love anything and everything to do with robots and/or zombies. My hatred of anything and everything to do with Michael Bay is pathological. This project has me very conflicted.
I liked the comic purely as a comic, but after reading the script felt that it really needed a lot of work, and I’m still doubtful this is a good idea. Sony’s in-house development seems rudderless of-late. They’ve passed on some good projects that were no-brainers, and fast-tracked/co-produced others that were train-crashed.
You know what I find interesting?
There are those on this board who feel they know the movie business, and are then proclaiming that SINCE this was based on a high concept comic, then the movie will be a hit and slam dunk…yada, yada, yada.
Yet if you go to a place like Ain’t It Cool News right now (which has a long talkback on this news)..as well as other sites that cater TO the geek mentality…you’d actually see that everyone is already ripping on this for how stupid it sounds.
So ironically, the very core audience that this thing is supposed to be targeted at are ALREADY mockingly saying, “Seriously? THIS is the best you could come up with? It SOUNDS like a cheesy fest just from the title alone. Pass.”
However, we still watch “Warehouse 13″ and “Doctor Who.” We still secretly lust after red British Payphone Booths to be placed in the woods up behind our mountainside homes, and even though it “Jumped The Shark,” we still watch “Fringe” while we wait for Piper Parabo and her Blind CIA boy-toy in waiting to come back frum Hiatus… Who says we can’t have some “Zombie Vs. Robots” action while we wait for Natalie Portman in “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies?”
Zombies robots and Michael Bay; FINALLY something of substance! Can’t wait for this one!
Hmmm…I got jerked around for 4 months by a film professor in New Orleans who claimed he was doing a movie with this title, then claimed he had some guy post the story line on ICM and ICM and Micheal Bay stole the concept for him-had me audition as one of the zombies, got the role ,had set dates to shoot,do makeup tests, and then blew me off-how can a professor of film at a college teach film and then get his story “stolen” as now I see where this really came from….hmmmm…
