CULVER CITY, Calif., February 14, 2011 – Columbia Pictures announced today that the title of the next Spider-Man film will be The Amazing Spider-Man.The studio simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first shot of Garfield in the famous full mask and suit.
The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. THE MOST NECESSARY FILM OF ALL TIME.
Good title.
And then, of course the sequel can be called, The Spectacular Spider-Man… then Friendly Neighborhood? Meh…
Nice!
I thought they would have gone for the equally creative “Spiderman” (note the lack of hyphen). But I guess they weren’t thinking outside the box.
My grandparents told me about this “Spider-Man” movie staring Tobey something that came out when they were kids. Sounds very dated.
Lame title and the pic is horrible. Everything I hear about the film is turning me off (except Garfield and Stone).
Come on.Lame title? That’s the name of the book. That’s actually the most appropriate title.
The sequel should be called The Spectacular Spider-Man and the third could be The Web of Spider-Man.Those are all titles of his books, and in lieu of using numbers, the titles actually line up alphabetically.
The new title is almost too easy an option. Some audience members, when they see the title, are gonna think that the new movie is a sequel to the Raimi films with a new title.
What are you hearing?
Wow guess they’re back to mechanical web-shooters.
I am a lifelong comic book and sci-fi fan and even I am getting superhero movie fatigue.
Never the biggest Spidey fan, though. I got the point with the three Maguire/Raimi flicks. Won’t be seeing this one. Kinda like “The Hobbit,” it’s not like we haven’t seen NINE+ HOURS of Middle-Earth, enough already.
I definitely agree that superhero/comic based movies are getting burned out. I mean there are what, 3-5 a year now? This year we’ve got X-men: First Class, The Green Lantern, Captain America, Thor, Transformers 3… Oh and don’t forget, they MUST all be in 3D!!!
I disagree with The Hobbit though. This is a movie I’ve been waiting for ever since I was a kid (The animated one doesn’t count). Plus its been almost 8 years since Return of the King so its not like he overdid it or drew it out. It was a trilogy and once it ended, it ended. There haven’t really been any really good epic fantasy films since then. Sure they try with movies like Narnia, Golden Compass, Percy Jackson, Eragon, and the never-ending Harry Potter (HP is better than the previous films listed), but we all know those weren’t as good. I’ll be first in line for The Hobbit!
The animated one is the ONLY one that counts! F**k books.
I see no one has seen the really great(for me at least) news that the pic answers: MECHANICAL WEB SHOOTERZZ!!!!!!
And why is that a big deal, the non-geek may ask? It is because the web shooter as well as other inventions like the web tracer utilize Spider-man’s “batman” side of gadgets and his science genius side that was never portrayed in the first trilogy.
The best thing about this picture by far? MECHANICAL WEB SLINGERS!!!! There is hope after all.
I like the title. Suit makes him look like a basketball though. Ugly design all around. There are leaked images of stripes on his legs not seen here.
Looks like … Spiderman.
What I find hysterical is that, contrary to what everyone born before 2011 thinks, this is actually not what Spiderman looks like now that he’s a member of the Fantastic Four, sorry the Future Foundation (did I dream that or is that a real thing?).
Part of me believes Marvel Films had Marvel Comics “kill” the Human Torch so that people won’t go to see Captain America this summer and say, “Hey isn’t that the fire guy from that movie with blond Jessica Alba?”. Then Marvel Comics went wolfshit with the whole Torch/Spider/FF mashup to get back at Marvel Films Spiderman reboot. Whatever, only people who read the comics would care about any of this anyway so I’ll shut up now.
Really lame title. Sounds goofy to everyone who isn’t a comic book nut. This will be a far less than amazing film.
looks like heaven to me this will be my best summer yet.
I bet he feels like a basketball.
That costume is fucking horrible. They couldn’t get the web pattern right, and the boots look like something someone made for Comic-Con back in the day.
Who cares what he looks like in his leotards? It’s gonna be CRI anyway. Better to spend effort and thought on the script.
(blush) I meant CGI. Nobody makes CRIs any more.
This is the first pic to actually give me hope to this production but just like Web-Shooter said I’m on Superhero fatigue. I do like the title though
If Irrfan Khan married Rhys Ifans (say, in Massachusetts), he’d be Irrfan Ifans!
I’m a fan of Irrfan Ifans!!
I love this comment!
The most telling thing about this photo is that they’re hiding the costume in the dark, especially the inexplicable “dirty crotch”, weird stripes, lack of any “belt” to break up the torso, and those hilarious silver slippers. (Where are his feet, Sony?)
When actually lit and seen in its entirety, this costume is an abominable train wreck.
Sony should seriously go back to the drawing board, fix the damn costume, and reshoot, because this is going to be a bigger disaster than the nipples-and-cod-piece Batsuit from Batman & Robin that buried that franchise.
I totally agree. The image is extremely dark, and not particularly interesting.
Moreover, I fail to understand how this begins to identify Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man, since any actor could be in this costume and/or CG image?
I sure hope this film is better than the Broadway show.
YES ^
WEBSHOOTERS!!!!
This movie is going to be very bad. I’ve worked on set. It will bomb… Rami had a much better vision… It’s just Sony’s last ditch effort to make money before Disney controls all of Marvel profits.
Oh no, please! I am so excited about Garfield, Stone and Irrfan Khan being in it. I want this film to be good, and so much like Ultimate SpiderMan-ish.
Is it really bad? Why?
I actually understand it. It’s a throwback to the original Spider-Man series of the 60s. I know, I there might be something wrong with the suit (I don’t see it. Where the hell are you getting a basketball?), but I’m still excited to see this.
Ramones’ Spider-Man Theme, anyone?
Isn’t the film supposed to be darker and edgier?
I think this movie is heading in the right direction. Just like the remake of Hulk added “Incredible” and was a much better film than the original. I’m in no way saying that adding an adjective to the title will automatically make it better than its predecessors but then again, the Spider-Man trilogy wasn’t exactly that great to begin with.
Look at the Amazing Big Headed Spider Man go! Man that kid Garfield has a big cranium and toothpick of a body!
