Veteran actress Stockard Channing has signed on to star in NBC’s pilot 17th Precinct, an ensemble cop drama with supernatural elements from Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore. The project, from Sony Pictures TV, is set in the fictional town of Excelsior where magic and supernatural elements rule over science. Channing will play Mira, a fiercely intelligent former homicide detective who’s working in the robbery division of the 17th Precinct.
Meanwhile, Wentworth Miller and Orlando Jones are in talks for the ABC drama pilot Identity. The project, from ABC Studios and Eagle Eye scribe John Glenn, is based on an ITV/ITV Studio format and is an action procedural centered on an elite police unit formed to combat the explosion of identity-related crime. Miller and Jones would play members of the unit.

this sounds dreadful.
a classy actress from west wing to this?
All of the NBC drama pilots except Wonder Woman sound really great. Of course, Bob Greeenblatt is now president of NBC, so no wonder they seem to be doing riskier programming for network tv.
the face is too weird. too much bad plastic surgery. I really like her as an actress, but the face is weird.
I agree that’s a really bad picture, kind of scary to be truthful.
Actually, that face has been (part of) her considerable acting fortune. Back in, oh, about the 1700s she starred in a made-for-TV movie called “The Girl Most Likely To,” which was all about the revenge wreaked by an unattractive woman, abused by men, who gets her due after an accident and plastic surgery. I still remember the deep impression she made in that seriocomic role—even after all these years.
Flash forward to the 20th anniversary revival of Grease in the summer of 1998, which I saw in New Mexico at one of the last remaining Drive-In theaters in the country. Some sort of wonderful planetary alignment allowed those in our car to marvel at Stockard as she sang “There are Worse Things I Could Do,” and to see at the very same time—on the next outdoor screen, her performance in “Twilight” (with Paul Newman), which had just been released. She was even wearing similar violet blouses in both roles, and looked as if she had not aged one bit; she was simply mesmerizing.
The upshot: She’s a keeper. Talent AND staying power. Someone at NBC has been paying attention.
I can’t “like” a comment here so I’ll just say I like it the old fashioned way. LIKE!
Well, how does YOUR face look? Please do not dis the Channing virtually, especially if you don’t have a pic to back it up. Meet her in person: you’ll see she’s beautiful and sexy especially for her age. I just met her the other night in person (with pics to prove) and can say she is more than capable of filling this–or any other role.
I say Go Stock. But come back to Broadway so I can meet you again.
Stockard Channing is a class act, this could be a lot of fun…
Agree. She is great and so is Ron Moore. Can’t wait…
A 66 year old actress cast as a cop.You don’t see that everyday.
She can’t be 66. She was a high school senior in Grease and that was just 33 years ago.
WAIT A MINUTE!!
Does this mean the Robby Baitz play isn’t moving?
This would definitely put a crimp in the transfer of OTHER DESERT CITIES from Lincoln Center to Broadway.
Who would play Linda Lavin’s rich Republican sister? Would love to see Jessica Walter in that role. They might not be related, but they have both been married to Ron Liebman.
Barnaby Jane
These “veterans” will give us a reason to watch NBC.
Always loved Stockard Channing. But MORE cop shows??? Good God enough already.
Yeah, it’s a cop show, but it has magic. That’s different.I’m interested to see how they approach it.
Wow. Good job by NBC knowing what the viewers want. They sure will do well bringing in that coveted 18-49 year old male demographic with a new show staring Stockard Channing! It makes sense though; NBC brings Jay Leno back to “The Tonight Show”, starts up a new show with Kathy Bates, and then signs up for a new series with Stockard Channing. NBC sure knows how to get people excited. Reaching out to the Geriatric Community is a ladder to the top.
Leno is consistently winning his time period in 18-49s.
40s and 50s even 60s is not frickin geriatric! jeez oh wait… beauty is the butt of the 20 year old…
started reading with an open mind until this statement killed my care “an ensemble cop drama with supernatural elements from Battlestar Galactica” huh?
crime drama has enough drama without adding “supernatural” to the list. but that’s just my opinion. compelling cop drama turns to mush with magical elements. alas we shall see.
So NBC is finally hiring real actors now? Gee, between this and the Kathy Bates show, they might actually make a blip on the ratings radar outside of the Olympics every four years. In regard to Stockard Channing’s face, she’s had too much surgery but she knows how to act which is the important thing. Unfortunately, like Faye Dunaway and a few others, she can’t be cast age appropriately and yet can’t be cast for younger roles either because too many know how old they are so it’s all a bit strange.
Does anyone know why Wentworth Miller hasn’t made the switch to movies yet? Why is he still doing TV?
@Mike
Wentworth is a handsome dude but a pathetic actor. They can’t risk movie money on him.
