Lady Gaga in an egg and Justin Bieber resulted in a slight ratings bump for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on CBS. From 8-11:30PM, the show, which crowned Nashville-based Lady Antebellum as the night’s big winners, drew 26.55 million viewers and a 10.0/26 in adults 18-49. Compared to last year’s highly-rated telecast that aired on Jan. 31, outside the February sweep, the Grammys were up a tenth (1%) in adults 18-49 (from 9.9/24) and 3% in total viewers (from 25.87 million). It was the best delivery for the awards show in adults 18-49 since 2004 and in viewers since 2001. CBS won the night with a 8.2/22 in 18-49 and 23.7 million viewers.
The other programs last night suffered sharp declines against the Grammys. ABC’s Desperate Housewives (9.1 million), which last month hit a series low in 18-49 airing against the Golden Globes (3.1/8), sank to a new series low, 2.6/6. That was down 16% from the telecast on the night of the Golden Globes, which was the dramedy’s most recent original. Brothers & Sisters (1.8/5, 6.4 million) was down 10% from its most recent original, which also faced the Golden Globes, to hit a series low too. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (1.6/4, 6.4 million) was down 41% from its last original on Jan. 30, which was a two-hour. Extreme Makeover, which faced the Grammys, fell below its lead-in, America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.8/6, down 14% from Jan. 30), which aired against 60 Minutes on CBS (2.1/7, 12.2 million, up 50% vs. Jan. 30). ABC (2.0/5, 7.4 million) was third in the demo for the night and second in viewers.
Most of Fox’s comedies were down from their last originals on Jan. 23. At 8:30 PM, American Dad (1.9/6) was down 14%, The Simpsons (2.7/7) was down 10%, Bob’s Burgers (2.1/5) was down 5%, while Family Guy (3.2/8) was down 14% from its last original on Jan. 16. The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy all hit season lows, which qualifies as a series low for midseason comedy Bob’s Burgers. With an original Family Guy last night vs. a repeat the last time it aired a first-run episode on Jan. 30, The Cleveland Show (2.4/6) bucked the down trend, up 4%. Fox (2.3/6, 7.4 million) finished second for the night in 18-49. NBC stayed out of contention with Dateline and repeats.

Kudos to the Grammys for showing some integrity in awarding Esperanza a statue. She is a rare and beautiful musician and a class act given her remarkably sincere acceptance speech. Thank the lord that JB did not win, and I was disheartened to read that several JB fans attacked Esperanza’s Wikipedia page and covered it with racist, hateful messages. I hope they are found and prosecuted. Punks all.
I could have done without Streisand. Talk about tired and played out. I walked out of the room and then came back to that and thought the channel had been changed. Why on earth would they exclude Nikki Minaj as a performer? She is perhaps the most exciting new talent to emerge in years and we get Babs?
Agree, totally!
Just in case it hasn’t been said enough – to every casual-interest Lady Gaga fan who’s ‘pissed off’ that ‘some band you’ve never heard of’ won Album of the Year – does she have to win EVERY trophy at EVERY awards show to make you finally shut up?
Man up and stop listening to radio swill.
Can someone please explain to me the logic behind ABC’s decision to air originals of it’s Sunday serials against the Grammys & Globes???!!
At this point it’s plain right annoying and silly. Did they really think that the shows would hold up well against the Grammys or are they just trying to kill their shows and say- yea those low ratings don’t warrant a renewal.
I can’t.
The thought process is simple. ABC is banking on the fact that weekly watchers of Extreme Home Makeover, Desperate Housewives, and for the most part Brothers & Sisters are not interested in the Grammys or the Golden Globes. I believe they are correct and it was a good move by ABC. The Grammys and the Globes are not and never will be on the same level with the Emmys and the Oscars. ABC knows this.
Sorry … I hot submit early. I just do not think that the declines these shows saw had very much to do with the Grammys. The weekly watchers of the shows still tuned in. ABC did lose the casual channel surfing viewer. Not that big of a deal – especially if you wait until DVR numbers come in.
Really Brian? Have you even tried to read your comments out loud or are you one of those responsible for that embarassing ABC press release today that ABC finished as 2nd most watched net after CBS?
Those are not just channel surfers, both shows hit series lows. Series lows from when they aired against the Globes. There is nothing sensible about ABC airing originals against award shows that garner more viewers than their shows. Silly ABC.
i still dont understand how and why Lady Gaga for an album thats been out for atleast 2 years and she just keeps re-releasing with 2-3 new songs. really? and that new song is just awful “Born This Way” i would have loved to have seen Britney Spears instead. also thank God Justin Bieber didn’t win. now MAYBE he can go away.
Tuned out at 11 for local news thinking the show was over and the last of the awards was awarded. I changed the chanel to the station carring the Grammys about 30 minutes later and to my shock- it was still going strong.
Why does ABC insist on airing originals when awards shows are on?
I remember in Jan’ 05 when DH destroyed the Golden Globes & didn’t CBS move The Grammy’s in order to not compete with Desperate Housewives? Then in ’06 NBC moved the Golden Globes to Mondays.
Simply put, Desperate Housewives is just not the force it once was.
I did not it was on. I dont know any of the people and i would never ever buy any songs as long as unemployement is 0over 10%. we all no there are no jobs, why try to entertain people that are straving
Are you drunk?
Once again….who cares!
The Grammy show last night was terrible. I could only watch the first half hour.
Glad the overrated Bieber kid did not win though! hahahaha
Seriously, what is the deal with ABC and having new episodes of DH and Brothers & Sisters up against female skweing Golden Globes and some-what female -skewing The Grammys. I know they are trying to catch up NBC in the 18-49 demo but give it a break.
Kudos to Esperanza and Arcade Fire for their Best New Artist and Album of the Year awards, both well deserved. Finally, real talent, real musicianship and REAL MUSIC get the credit they deserve instead of the teenybopper garbage of Justin Bieber and the overrated, unbearable antics of the godawful Lady Gaga, who is apparently reading Madonna’s Guide to Becoming a Pop Star and is following it page by page. Not all music is made for the enjoyment of 12 year olds and idiots who buy “music” because a “performer” has a great ass or endless promotion or outfits made out of cold cuts. Too bad it’s almost always about the marketing, not the music. Gaga and Bieber are two of the worst out there right now. Screw them.
I think ABC is ready to retire both DH and B&S and these numbers will just support that decision.
Frankly, from a creative standpoint, this would be a good year for both to end. They have some existing and new hours (eg, Body of Proof) that would work well for Sunday. And perhaps Hallelujah (new Marc Cherry) will replace DH if it goes to series.
Bill has a point, you think anyone would listen to Lady Vomit if marketing executives weren’t shoving her down our throats? Or to Beyonce if she looked like Shelley Winters? Her voice is like fingernails on a blackboard. Rock on, Arcade Fire
Desperate Housewives shouldn’t have fallen as hard as its falling just from lame award shows. Its boring. Its hard to stay awake anymore and showing Terri Hatcher strutting around in underwear doesn’t make up for the lack of real new drama. The humor is still okay but the drama sucks. Its so bad, I almost wish mobster Tony Soprano would make an appearance and beat up some of these characters, or cut off body parts. Bet a large section of the audience would cheer.
Hahaha Bill’s middle-aged, that’s too bad.
