EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have acquired the Jay Asher novel 13 Reasons Why as a star vehicle for Selena Gomez. Strike’s Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing with Mandy Teefey of July Moon Productions.
Jennifer O’Kieffe has been set to adapt the novel, about a shy California high school student who returns from school to find a box waiting on his doorstep. It contains seven cassette tapes recorded by Hanna Baker, the classmate he had a crush on. Before she committed suicide, Hannah sent the tapes to one classmate with instructions to pass them on to a list of students like a chain letter. The tapes explain to 13 people how they played a role in her death. The book was a bestseller when published in 2007 by the Penguin Books young adult imprint RazorBill. Strike’s Kristel Laiblin is exec producer.
Gomez, who stars in the Disney Channel series The Wizards of Waverly Place, starred in the Tom Bezucha-directed Monte Carlo. She’s repped by CAA.

pardon my french but who the fuck would want to see this film?
Probably all of the people that have read the book. The book is extremely popular in middle and high schools. Not really sure why. I haven’t figured out why teens like reading super depressing stories. One kid told me that he likes to read them bc it makes him feel better about his own problems.
They want to read these because it is something relevant to their livee- unlike the dewad author’s collections. Is your question serious?
thirteen reasons why is actually my summer reading novel. I liked it though. Its inspiring.
Seriously. There are dramas and there are sad movies; this one belongs on the shelf of “Terrible Ideas for Movies that No One Wants to See.”
you know if you read the book you would know why it would make a good movie you idiot!
exactly!the book is amazing. just hope they make it the way it was written. not really looking forward to selena gomez but yeah
selena gomez is a great actress. don’t let the fact that she came from disney cloud your vision.
I completely agree with you about Selena starring in the movie. And it’s not because she’s from Disney, it’s because she just can’t act.
Selean Gomez will be 21 by then. I think she will be mature for this role.
OH my god, YES! I hate how people are like, ‘It’s going to be horrible!’ I’m just like you dumbtard! Clearly they haven’t read the novel. I like it, because it’s a lot more real then a lot of fiction. In life there aren’t always happy endings, and that’s exactly what this book displays. I LOVE IT TO PIECES, & I can’t wait for the movie. Does anyone know when it comes out? You can count on Harry Styles to be there for sure!
wow way to judge a book by its cover a** hole.
Really? Really??
that is NOT true. 13 reasons why is an AMAZING book and i think it would be a great movie…
Selena’s OK- not THAT bad… right?
this is going to be a really good movie and A LOT of people are going to want to watch it. Your a hater thats all.
I actually like the book but I don’t really want Selena Gomez in the movie.
As to why would I read this? Well I wouldn’t I? Do you want kids to read books about fake realtionships, fake lands, fake vampires rather then something that happens in the real world?
Jay Asher met with Gomez to discuss why she wanted to be involved. He believes she will be an amazing Hanna, so, why shouldnt we?
I was nervous when I first heard about her starring in it, but Im putting trust in Jay.
This book really felt so important, you know? Everything we do can have an impact on someone’s life, big and small. Seeing it made into a movie wouldnt be my first choice, but its a way to get more people to read it, and if they dont, at least the concept can reach them in a way they feel more comfortable being reached: through movies.
I cant wait
This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I hate that Selena Gomez is playing Hannah. I pictured Hannah completely different in the book. Also, Selena isn’t that great of an actor, and I feel she will barely be able to skim the surface of the depth that is the character of Hannah. I really hope this truly moving book isn’t ruined by a mediocre teen star.
Totally agree with you!
give her a chance. i’ve been surprised by her acting ability before (though singing, not so much).
She will be 21!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well at least they didn’t cast Miley freakin’ Cyrus haha. i can’t wait to see this movie. the book seriously changed my life
totally agree. i definitely imagined Hannah differently. selena should not act in this movie. if she ruins it… omg.
Selena Gomez is an amazing actress, trust me. Don’t be so harsh. You should give her a chance. No to mention, people will still like the movie even if Selena messes up( I doubt she will)because her fans will support her
Lots of people…………….. maybe people who can read
i would see the movie so shut up mr. negaitve
well george, if u would take the time to read the book, you would see its amazing, and then understand why so many of us want to see the movie.
Ms.t is that u
I would LOVE to see the movie because it has Selena Gomez in it. BTW when is it coming out?
the book is very interesting its a mystery that keeps you turning the pages you just want to know what part every one played in her death granted there were a few boreing spots at most a page to 2 pages long but it kept my interest and i cant wait to see the movie
your french is pardoned but i want to see this movie! but i personally think nina dobrev from the vampire diaries should play hannah and selena should play courtney
people who read the book and loved it.
the people who read the book and thought it was a great one?if you dont like it or dont want to see this movie, then get off this page and dont look it up.simple.
Ya! Go Selena
what’s a cassette tape?
It came after the reel to reel tape, and 8 track tape.
Bob, you’re right. Why didn’t she record on something more ubiquitous, like a MiniDisc?
Jay Asher said that he had Hannah record on tapes so that when Clay is thinking, “oh, those are so outdated,” the book won’t become outdated because they already think that tapes are old, as opposed to her recording on the latest technology, which, in 3 years, would be old, instantly dating the book.
Selena Gomez should not be allowed to be a part of this movie. She can’t act and she doesn’t fit the part whatsoever. I will definitely not go see the movie if she’s in this.
selena is a very good actress
Steve,
In what part of your mother’s basement/your bedroom do you keep your Selena Gomez shrine?
couldn’t agree to you more. she is SO wrong on all levels for this film. it will completely ruin the purpose of the movie. this just ruined my day.
Mine too!
Wow. That’s rude. Selena Gomez can act good enough to have her own tv show and tons of movies.
true she has her own tv show and has been in movies, but lets face it, all of her experience has been aimed toward kids. her main fanbase is basically 7-12 year olds, and i feel that they are not mature enough for this emotional and dramatic plotline.
either this movie will traumatize you fans, of the directors will be clever enough to edit out ‘inapropriate parts’ and in doing so will essentially destroy the movie.
selena is good at what shes doing right now, shows aimed towards kids, and id hate to see her wreck a masterpeice like this one.
with everything shes gone though, im surprised they didnt pick demi lovato to play this role, but hey, who am i to judge.
someone mentioned previously that jay asher met with selena and liked her. where is this information exactly? honestly, the lone fact that jay said she was good with get the movie tons more views and i dont trust that he really thinks that shes a good fit.
i hate to see such a good story told in such a bad way
I have 2 things to say to hanna:
1. I agree with you totally on the fanbase of Selena Gomez. I’m not sure how this movie would work w/ Gomez but I’d still go and see it.
2. As for Demi Lovoto playing the part of Hannah are you insane? What person in thier right mind would put a young woman who has been put into rehab for many different, but connected reasons in a movie where she would play a character who commits suicide.
I don’t see the sense in that.
I think the fact that Selena isn’t working for Disney anymore is a reason to trus her. I know there are better actors, but I like her. And she needs to get out of the Disney world, this is far more important in my opinion. I think she could work it out if she’s truly comitted, and I think she will. Either way we just have to find out. The book will still be the same and still be amazing with or without Selena. Period.
Jay Asher said in his official blog that he thought Selena was the perfect fit.
I am 17 and adore Selena Gomez. I think she will be perfect for something that can help her grow as a person and as an actress. Give her credit for wanting to expand her fanbase/the amount of people who respect her…
Well chrystina, the author Jay Asher wrote on his blog that he couldn’t be happier with the people involved so if he thinks Selena could play Hanna I bet she can.
I completely agree with you…
chrystina you should be the last one telling someone that they can or cant act. if she couldnt act them why is she a teen millionaire??? dont comment if you dont know what ur talking about. selena is great and if you dont like her then dont see the movie read the book again, that is if you can even read
oh no -_- why did it have to be selena gomez? grrr
maybe because shes an awesome actress
No, she’s a horrible actress.
Disney’s so called “stars” should stay with Disney and not go on to be in roles of movies that need to be good because they were good books. They cannot be good movies if there are stupid little Disney actors and actresses in them. They deserve REAL actors and actresses.
But to be honest, I’ll go see it anyway. Because as long as they don’t ruin the book by changing things around in the movie, she’ll only be in it in flashbacks, along with her voice on the tapes. But I have to agree with Melissa: there are many scenes that I’m not sure Disney would want people to see Selena in. Rape scenes being the top of them all. And if she doesn’t back out, they will probably leave them all altogether, even though they are crucial parts of the book. If she doesn’t back out, then she’d better step up to the plate and do her best in the role of Hanna Baker, because there are many fans of the book out there.
Agreed. Selena Gomez is a horrible actress (don’t mean to offend anyone) and she could never really pick up the essence of Hannah Baker. She should either stick with Disney, or go shoot a comedy movie.
-P.S.
cherry shut the fuck up! disney is for young actresses/actors who want to intertain children while they are YOUNG!! get a clue idiot!! selena is a grown women who wants to follow her dream intertaining people! just because she started out at disney doesnt me anything stupid. i bet you cant even get a part in a class play or school musical. dont critize her work until you have something near as good as acting as selena gomez
Selena isn’t working for Disney anymore, smarthead, so why would they care?
hmm… let me guess..
CUZ SHE IS A BRILLIANT ACTRESS! DUH!!!
I ean really, that girl has her own tv show and her own movies and her true unique acting ability.
who do you want? justin beiber? AHAHAHAA LOL!
First, Hanna Baker is completely not beautiful. She is downright depressed and broken. I can never see Selena like that. Selena’s attachment to this role disappoints me. There are two major rape scenes in the book and I have no doubt that they’ll censor it to keep Selena’s reputation. This movie will have a soundtrack of all songs performed by Selena herself featuring Justin Bieber. That’s my guess. I like Selena as a person a lot. She’s normal, but she’s no Hanna Baker. I’m sincerely hoping she’ll back out of this.
I think she just wants to do this movie in order to lose her ‘good girl’ image.
Sounds like a happy story.
Possability # 1. It’s a period piece that feature’s stone-age technology. Possability # 2. It’s a typo, videocassete was the intended word.
I’ve read the book, which is actually quite good, and though cassette tapes were used, it is a contemporary novel.
Sorry–you are wrong on both guesses…I am perplexed as to why folks would comment on issues they have no knowledge or experience. Read the book (many copies have a question and answer interview with the author in which he explains details such as this) THEN you may be qualified to comment and/or have an opinion.
holy crap… that’s straight twisted… i’ve never heard of this book and i really don’t think i’d read it if i had… but if Selena’s honestly been attached to this and her mother truly is producing… i will totally watch it…
But it sounds like something that would be an Indie movie… from what little i know, it strikes me as something that wouldn’t be a main stream thing that UP would pick up… which leaves me all the more curious as to how this will play out… not something that would be up my ally, but im intrigued none the less.
I mentioned that i thought it was twisted… it does seem really creepy and if Selena would play the girl who killed herself (ima guess they’d bring her in via voice over and flash backs)… i think it would be the perfect roll for Selena to show the world that she’s not all about the bubble gum… It sounds perfect to build a broader image for her as an actress…
*is pumped*
Go Sel!!! And go Mandy!!! (Selena’s Mom) She’ll rock it!!
There is no typo. It’s cassettes as in audio cassettes. The movie is based on Jay Asher’s novel and Hanna records on cassettes. One reason is probably because you can just record your voice on a CD.
Er, no. I used to record music to CD very happily. Now I do it directly to the hard drive or solid state memory. I haven’t read the novel but it sounds like passive-aggressive emotional blackmail from beyond the grave. Who cares?
The book is not about revenge but making people realize the impact that your actions have on other people; how one simple action or inaction can alter someone else’s life. The tapes are only kept between the people they are meant for, not spread publicly and it is her way of letting these people know how they affected her. It really is a good book you should check out.
Honestly, I was uber excited when I heard about the movie on Jay Asher’s (the author of the book) blog, but now that I see Selena Gomez is presumably Hanna, I’m very disappointed. I don’t think she can pull off a roll this deep and depressing. Hanna goes through some really rough things and I can’t picture Selena playing her. Nothing against her, but she’s just too – I’m not even sure I can find the right word to describe what I mean. If she does pull it off, then I’ll be very impressed with her acting capabilities. I just can’t see her being Hanna. Another reason I’m disappointed at this news is that with Selena being in the movie, it will attract her young, pre-teen audience who wouldn’t be able to understand fully the depths of the story and will only see it because Selena is in it.
I couldn’t agree with you more! It is a wonderful book about the very sad journey that Hannah takes. It makes you stop and think about how what you say and do affects others.
It should be rated “R” but I don’t think that will keep away the preteens. I’m happy for Jay, but I don’t think I will be seeing the movie. The book was amazing and the audio version gave me chills, but I can’t see Ms. Gomez pulling off the role. I’m also surprised Disney is letting her do it. The scene in the hot tub alone is enough to garner it an “R” rating.
My only hope is that the hype from the movie will cause more people to read the book. It’s a really great book for older teens and adults alike.
I agree with you. Hopefully teens and adults who care about teens will all rush to read it before the movie comes out. Congrats, Jay!
WoW!!! And BTW Selena is a gr8 actress. This is a really good chance for Selena to show her talents other than comedy! She will be able to do it!! I believe! I’ll definitely watch this movie when it comes out and Selena is just awesome!!
When I first heard that there’s a movie version coming out I was really hyped and super excited… but then I found out it was going to be Selena as Hannah I was quite disappointed. I was really hoping to see a fresh and a more appropriate actress for the role.
This was a very tragic and beautiful story with a wonderful message. I’m thrilled they are turning it into a movie.
Just because Selena’s gonna be in this movie doesn’t mean it will be watered down for little kids. Do you even know why she’s doing a movie like this in the 1st place? She wants to be a serious, respectable actress! She wants to do a more mature, dramatic movie. Selena is an emotional person, so I’m sure she’ll do this character justice.
Another thing, it’s not Hanna…it’s Hannah, with an H at the end. Which just proves that you guys never even read the book, so why would you say “oh I can’t picture her playing this role”. Oh please. Liars is what you guys are.
HONESTLY, this movie WILL Help Selena & will show that she can act REALLY & that she can do everything & not just comedies, because this is different.
Im sure Selena can do it THE BEST as usual!
I like Selena Gomez but I can’t picture her as Hannah, maybe its just me having an automatic bias to all the current Disney Channel stars but I really love this book and hope they do well with the movie.
They will probably censoring or suggesting those rape scenes, because of Selena’s reputation, and for her fans. Also, her mother is directing the movie as well.
She Is going to do an amazing job.asher met with her once after she contacted him telling him what an impact his book had on her.
I’m so happy this wonderful novel is going to the silver screen! I absolutely love this book, but I have to agree with those who don’t see Selena as Hannah. I really REALLY hope it won’t become a typical teen Disney movie, even though it’s from Universal Pictures..
Anyway, they’d better make a good movie out of it!
Selena Gomez is such an amazing actress and I’m soglad she’s gonna be in this movie. I can’t wait to watch it.. Actually, I just bought the book because of her.
You’re going to get a pretty rude shock if you’re just picking up the book because of it’s association with Salena.
I’ve more read this article because I’m interested in the adaptation of Asher’s book to film, but after reading the comments I feel like throwing in a small penny to the Gomez debate. Gomez has never done a role like this one, which means there is no way to know if she can or can’t do a role like this one. But I say, if she’s branching out of Disney and wanting to take her acting career to deeper acting, to move from child actor to young adult actor (and maybe eventually adult actor), then good for her.
That isn’t to say I’m a little nervous about her portrayal of Hanna–I am–but I think I’d be nervous no matter what. It will be a very strong and difficult role for any teenage actress; it will push the bounds of their acting skills and, I hope, make whoever does play Hanna a better actress all around.
Oh, and if you don’t like this genre of book or film that’s fine, but that doesn’t make it inherently bad. Just not your cuppa tea.
Woow! Big step for selena
:))
Shes n awesome actress.. Grammy is the prove lol..let haters be hate!they hav no life but jealous ewww..go selena
Minor point here, but doesn’t this title set off the Lynne Truss usage alarm (see: Two Weeks Notice)? To combine the words “reason” and “why” is redundant; the meaning of “why” is embedded in the word “reason.”
Should be “13 Reasons That.”
Its not redundant, its shortening the sentence “Thirteen reasons why she committed suicide”.
