EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have acquired the Jay Asher novel 13 Reasons Why as a star vehicle for Selena Gomez. Strike’s Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing with Mandy Teefey of July Moon Productions.
Jennifer O’Kieffe has been set to adapt the novel, about a shy California high school student who returns from school to find a box waiting on his doorstep. It contains seven cassette tapes recorded by Hanna Baker, the classmate he had a crush on. Before she committed suicide, Hannah sent the tapes to one classmate with instructions to pass them on to a list of students like a chain letter. The tapes explain to 13 people how they played a role in her death. The book was a bestseller when published in 2007 by the Penguin Books young adult imprint RazorBill. Strike’s Kristel Laiblin is exec producer.
Gomez, who stars in the Disney Channel series The Wizards of Waverly Place, starred in the Tom Bezucha-directed Monte Carlo. She’s repped by CAA.

All in all Disney best actress right now is Selena, and although many ppl wont like the fact that a Disney girl got this role. The decision has been made, and if you seen on Jay Asher blog he known Selena for quite some time and love her personally. I’m excited to see if she does this amazing book justice. I think Selena will do great for this movie.

I don’t have anything against going with a more ethnic representation of Hannah Baker. Though, someone so cutesy was not what I imagined. But who knows? Maybe this will be her breakout role.
I don’t know why anyone would care if she’s a “Disney Girl”. Loads of people have come through the Disney machine and turned out just fine. But you do have to take into account, the Disney issue may have less to do with the actress’ ability to act and more to do with crap scripts and direction. When was the last time a live-action Disney show/made for T.V. movie wasn’t poorly written with cheesy lines that insult the watcher’s intelligence?
Though she’s too young for the role, an older version of Chloe Moretz was always who I had in my mind when reading the book.
Regardless of everyone down on the cast, Jay Asher’s book is amazing and should be read by every middle and high schooler (and even adult with or without kids) as a reminder of how we treat and interact with others. Hence it is pretty terrible that lovers of Jay’s book would be so hateful about the girl who is going to play Hannah. Did you learn anything from reading that book?
I think Selena’s a good actress, but in comedy and light-hearted roles.

i bet all the people rooting for selena to play the role never even heard of this book because the people who read it know that selena CANT play hannah. this movie is gonna suck and ruin my favorite book of all time. they need someone with dakota fannings acting skills to play that character. this movie better be good or a lot of people are going to be disappointed.
A lot of these comment’s show why performer’s need to have a well developed range, or else they may end up in type-cast hell,- never a good place to be while people are buying movie ticket’s. Give her a chance,- watch her new movie with no thought of her previous role’s.
i can’t agree more with the people that are saying that as long as the book is not ruined in this movie, then why should it matter who is playing her. it’s called acting for a reason, and they will make selena look like hanna most likely. so chill out, and don’t worry about who the actors and actresses are, it’s about not ruining the book in this movie. i’m definitely seeing this movie when it comes out, no matter who’s in it.
We really should support her, instead of judging her. I shall for sure see this movie. Also, I don’t think she will lose her ‘good girl’ image, because this is for a movie and not in real life.

I love Selena but she is SO wrong for the part of Hannah. I always pictured Dianna Agron when I was reading it.
I don’t care if some people think that Selena Gomez is not right for this movie. As long as she plays it rightfully and with everything in her, I’ll LOVE it. I don’t really get why some think she’s not so great of an actress, haven’t you seen her in ‘Another Cinderella Story’ or ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ both Movie and Series or in ‘PPP’ or in ‘Ramona and Beezus’ every role that she played, she played it right, she did it with justice. And have you seen her cry in WOWP? It’s as if you would want to cry too.

I loved this book, however I do not think that Selena should play Hannah. Not that its a bad role for her, she just is not the Hannah that was explain in the book.
I’ve read the book, and loved it deeply. (Anyone who hasn’t read the book, PLEASE read it first. It’s a book that will keep you flipping pages until you stay up ’till 2 in the morning….trust me, i’ve done it.) No spoilers will be given, but I really don’t believe Selena suits the part. Many audiences with this film will be reached out in this film: The really young kids, those that idolize (that are like 10 and 11), older teens that actually want to see the movie, and those that read the movie and don’t care who is lead. (Well actually, not really a lead because you never see her.) But I’m excited to see this as a film. Especially certain scenes.
Great news for Jay Asher! Thirteen Reasons Why was on top of the best sellers list for 65 weeks. Published in a huge number of countries. Whooo hoo! Great book. Still one of my top picks for a young adult novel. I already have ideas about how the movie will be produced. Can’t wait!
Since I am not a Disney channel watcher, and didn’t even know who Selena Gomez was, I am now interested to see how well she will be able to pull off this role. I sort of get the idea from the comments made that many of you don’t think a pretty girl can become depressed enough to commit suicide. Hum.
But let’s look at the flip side: This is a suspense novel and the star is CLAY. Who will play him????
When I was reading the book Clay -for me- was Logan Lerman. He fits so great on the role since I saw him on NUMER 23 with Jim Carrey. I don’t know, he’s a great young actor, but sincerely… Selena’s not good for this. At all.
I think she is perfect for the role of hannah baker. And she can act. I love the book so much and i have read it more than ones. Cause it is a great story:-) hopefully she will make this movie. Okay i dont know why peeps are freaking out here. Selena is 18 years old!!!! If you were her age would you want to be acting about magic wands and werewolf boyfriends. She is at that age when she doesn’t want to act about bubblegum and stuff. If she wants to grow up let her! And that stuff about her fans not understanding that stuff is BS. Most of her fans are already exposed to that stuff, and if the person is that young maybe the parents should be smart enough to keep their children away. And i think she is perfectly capable, but if she sucks at the acting then she sucks. NOT A BIG DEAL.

I’m not sure if I like Selena Gomez. I haven’t found out why I hate her or why I like her. There’s something in her that makes me feel she’s a fake, but at the same time I understand why she should be fake. She’s seemed by everybody as the “good girl” so I think she wants to please everybody by showing them what they wanna see and not what she really is. I feel she’s not true to herself, but I cannot say to much because I don’t really know her.
By the thing of the movie… I don’t really feel she fits on the role of Hannah Baker. She’s not a bad actress, but I feel she don’t fit on Hannah. She’s beautiful, but Hannah is attractive. Selena is cute, but Hannah is interesting. You feel like you really need to know her. That’s the reason why Clay is obsessed about knowing the end of those tapes and about her since he sees her. Selena kinda goes with Courtney, because -as I said- she wants to please everybody, but Hannah is trying to be true to herself. She goes through struggles and keeps quiet until she decides to end with her life because she feels she needs to say that to somebody, but she trust nobody so she makes it interesting. She’s cased on her misery that she doesn’t see that there’s something to fight for, to life for: trust people she can.
So, well, UNIVERSAL… Please find somebody who could make your movie more attractive. Don’t go for Selena just because she’s famous and has a good fan base because the people who love the book -as I’m learning to- are going to be damn disappointed.

Okay, I have never read this book personally, but I know many people who have and I have read alot about it online. I am 15 so I actually understand firsthand some of the things that go on in the book. I am a Selena Gomez fan, and I believe she is a very capable actress. To be honest though, I don’t think she fits the part very well. Although, I think she should be given a chance. I think Disney has been very good to her, but I also think that they are holding her back a little bit. In her Disney show it is obvious she is the most talented actor/actress. I think we should let her have the chance to blow us all away.
