EXCLUSIVE: Jaume Collet-Serra, director of the upcoming thriller Unknown starring Liam Neeson, will make his TV directing debut with the ABC pilot The River, a horror drama from Paranormal Activity writer-director Oren Peli. Described as being in the mold of Paranormal Activity, The River centers on a family who travels to the deep Amazon to locate and rescue their missing father. The project is right in Collet-Serra’s wheelhouse. Before Unknown, which opens on Friday, he directed the horror thrillers Orphan and House of Wax. Peli co-wrote the first draft with Paranormal Activity 2 scribe Michael Perry. Heroes veteran and Kings creator Michael Green then did a p.1 rewrite, which was greenlighted to pilot.
Spanish-born Collet-Serra, repped by CAA, is negotiating to direct Harker, a spec script by Lee Shipman & Brian McGreevy acquired by Warner Bros. for Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran to produce with Mad Hatter Entertainment’s Michael Connolly. The project is described as a re-imagining of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

It sounds dark for network tv. Creatively risky.
Thanks to Paul Lee and Bob Greenblatt, the networks are taking risks again on the drama side.
“House of Wax” may have been another formulaic slasher, but it did have it’s moments. And for a low budget (by Hollywood standards) film it looked very nice and slick.
“Orphan” was a fun movie that also looked very good. Curious to see “Unknown”. I dig this guy and hope he get’s to break out eventually.
The River is great. My favorite pilot read so far this season.
Yeah, it could suck 12 eps in. But I’m willing to give it a couple to find out. More than I can say for most of the rest.
After Body of Evidence chokes and V is pulled, hopefully ‘River’ can find a home somewhere on the network.
Agree with Magus (hehe): favorite pilot read so far this season. They need cast really, really good actors, though. I feel that will make the difference. If we see another blond, breasts-and-cheeks-implants chick, who can’t act her way out of a brown paper bag, commanding this Amazon expedition/rescue… ahhh.
A show *not* about lawyers, cops, doctors, vampires, rich teens… thank you, ABC!
I enjoyed House of Was and Orphan very much, Jaume seems to know what he’s doing so hopefully The River will do good. But it’s on ABC and they are not good at advertising or holding anything that does not involve middle-aged (plus) housewives or doctors hooking up with one another. I know that was a bit harsh, but it’s inevitably true. Look at Happy Town, It had a rough start because it was not properly promoted and aired in a horrible timeslot (weds @ 10 in April). After just 4 episodes, they pulled it for 2 weeks without notice until June and then did not even air all the remaining episodes. They also did poorly with Eastwick and Pushing Daisies, which had the comedy aspect, but had supernatural elements to them.
So as much as I enjoy Jaume’s work and this project seems to have great potential, I feel like it will probably die on ABC, if it gets a season order. I would put it on AMC or FX, but we’ll see I guess. I could be wrong, but just look at ABCs track record with shows in general.
Harker 2014? Give this guy a good script NOW! I’m not sure his team made a wise decision going with TV, let alone a risky project by ABC.
Smart move by ABC considering I expect to see Teri Hatcher or Sally Field when I turn to Channel 7. As for Collet-Serra, he is the most talented up-and-coming director right now. He directed Paris Hilton and that 5 year old in Orphan, talk about paying your dues. Give this guy a legit script so he can work his magic!…
Unknown trailer looks awesome, but you know how those action-thrillers can turn out… either way I’m watching it this weekend, hope it’s as good as the trailer.
