Voltage Pictures will finance and sell the international rights for director Rob Reiner’s (The Bucket List, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me…) next project, The Third Act. The picture is scheduled to start principal photography in May and stars Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman (Red, Invictus, The Dark Knight) and Academy Award nominee Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right, American Beauty, Mars Attacks!).
The inspirational script by Guy Thomas tells the story of a formerly famous western writer attempts to rediscover the talent that made him great in a small rural town. In doing so, he helps a young girl find her wild imagination and helps her mother find love once more.
The Third Act will be Bening’s follow-up to her Academy Award-nominated performance in The Kids Are All Right. She previously starred in Rob Reiner’s The American President. The project also marks the latest collaboration between Freeman and Reiner since The Bucket List in 2007.
Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker) acquired the picture on behalf of Voltage and is kicking off sales for international rights at Berlin. CAA negotiated the deal with Voltage and is representing the film’s domestic rights.

Really good script, and a great director!
after ‘rumor has it…’ i am surprised reiner was even allowed to direct another film. easily one of the worst movies ever.
Rob did that as a favor to the studio, an attempt to salvage a deeply flawed project he hadn’t developed.
Rob Reiner hasn’t made a “half-decent” film since GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI 15 years ago in 1996, stress on the half-decent. AMERICAN PRESIDENT was good, but not that memorable. The last great film he made was A FEW GOOD MEN in 1992 almost 20 years ago.
FLIPPED was awful, bad casting (the lead boy was terrible with no charisma), and poor directing. Didn’t even bother with ALEX AND EMMA. Personally didn’t like BUCKET LIST either, thought it was fluff, but at least it made a lot of money.
How he continues to get films financed is beyond me … however, I always like an underdog and comeback kid, so hopefully this will be good.
the lead boy from flipped – who was actually very good in the movie – happens to be amazing in i am number 4.
OMG THIS IS SO OLD SCHOOL -
how boring another old man directing with old people starring about being old
who cares? At least MF isnt trying to produce this one…
Clearly you are a mere child (anyone under 30). Ah youth…
As a 48 year old woman whose favorite film is “Something’s Gotta Give”, I’ll take a sentimental comedy over a testosterone driven, 3D sequel anyday. I look forward to The Third Act and someday I am sure you will eat them words sonny!
Hey Anonymous, are you suggesting that once an actor becomes.. oh say 40, that should be the end of their career?
Voltage do your due diligence and explore those that have surrounded Rob in his movies recently. Some old ghost from the Castlerock closet. There is a definite correleation in the quality of the films and those people. Voltage supply new blood and security from the ghost of castlerock pasts. BTD
The “lead boy” from flipped is Callan MacAuliffe and he was the only good thing about that film. Just saw I am number four and He’s great in that too. Lots to look forward to from Callan.
excellent cast! morgan freeman was in the bucket list and annette in american president, two great films!
