Warner Bros and Anonymous Content have acquired the rights to Fletch, the Gregory McDonald novel series that starred Chevy Chase. Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Steve Golin will produce, along with David List, who reps the estate. The studio made an aggressive pre-emptive buy to reboot the series about an investigative reporter who solves mysteries. There are 11 books in the series. The studio is eyeing a new franchise with the property. Chase starred in the 1985 pic Fletch, followed by the 1989 sequel Fletch Lives.

Finally! An original idea!
Oh, wait…
Maybe something can be so extremely unoriginal that it becomes original? The suits continue to suffocate Hollywood, and the dream machine that once entertained and inspired billions has just become a giant scam. Find the easiest ways to part audiences with their hard earned money by producing movies they’ve already seen, based on books they’ve already read, comic books they’ve already read, or video games that were ripped off from movies. Most of the best films of 2011 were made outside the studio system. If I was an investor in these big studios I’d be asking why, and would want to know just what the heck the execs do to justify their bloated salaries.
One of the greatest BOMBS of al time was the recent NUTCRACKER 3D MOVIE. The vmas story was reset in Vienna and involved Nazis and trains to concentration camps. It came out in November.
It raked in 160k domestic and 80k foreign – thereabouts.
Production cost was 90 million dollars.
perhaps this is the biggest BOMB of all time.
WEre there any lawsuits over this movie? Er, BOMB?
Maybe some idiot in Hollywood will make a Fletch – Nutcracker hybrid film; I would defintely go.
Awww, come on guys, it’s so simple. Maybe you need a refresher course.
It’s all ball bearings nowadays
Seriously . . . Just bring back Chevy. I bet he can pull off one more great performance. At least I hope he could. Then they can do a reboot–maybe Son of Fletch.
Will Dr. Rosenpenis make an appearance?
Yes, as will: Dr. Rosenrose, Dr. Rosenblum, Mr. Poon and Mr. Babar! One “b”, not two! My real point: there are THOUSANDS of great, original screenplays sitting in screenplay contest offices right now that agent/managers/studios could be reading and turning into successful films. Have some courage! You can’t do remakes forever! It waters down the culture!
The Truth,
I don’t get it. We only see crap because they only make crap. I mean, personally, I go to the Lamelle Theaters or the Landmark Theaters to see all my films. I support those theaters because they support original material. I will not spend a dime on anything in a multiplex. Only keeps the crap coming.
There are great stories (scripts) sitting on desks. Nobody has balls. Nobody. I mean the guys in this business are a nut short of a labia. It’s that bad. They will do anything to keep their jobs.
Harvey and Sundance may just save us. We all want movies to return. I mean the great original ideas and stories like were in teh 70′s and 90′s. Harvey Weinstein is still the best rare bird. The rest are lemmings.
The Truth – keep up the good work out here. We need commentators like ourselves out here to balance out the secretaries going to see crap like this.
Is on it’s way….
Oh, for f#ck’s sake.
Come on. Really… Some one stop the insanity with the remakes. I know its underlying is a novel(s) but these people are not the Coen Brothers…. Please stop, and don’t give Chevy a cameo. That would be too cute…
“Fletch” ? And before that “Brewster’s Millions”?
Will this re-make insanity S-T-O-P !!!!! Next we will probably hear about “Animal House” or “American Pie” or “The Apartment” being up for a remake, er, re-imagining…
What the hell do “creative” execs do all day if remakes are so en vogue? Talk about a lazy industry that is more interested in making money with safe, predictable and underwhelming choices than taking risks and daring for great, groundbreaking and, yes, money-making work. Pathetic to tell you the truth.
YEAH,
can’t see room for improvement here!
wow, i saw this movie when i was still a kid.
It’s Doctor Rosenpenis. Where’s the records room?
Its about time. I’ve been waiting for a real Fletch movie for a long time!
Warning: Never step in to a great man’s shoes. It will fail.
Can’t believe they were able to overcome the Harvey Weinstein had on this project… I just wish we could all get our hands on that Harry Stein draft.
These books are brilliant. Can’t wait!
A other studio piece of shit . It was bad enough the first time
Wasn’t this at the Weinstein Company and they lost the rights when they couldn’t find any filmmakers were who interested in this?
Congrats, David… For those of you who don’t know him, he is a great guy who saw this through by playing it smart.
The books are a great series. Chevy Chase pretty much crapped out after the first film, which is still funny today. So of all the concepts out there that made sense to take to market, this was probably the smartest.
Good lookin out, Warner, doesn’t surprise me that you guys see this as worth doing.
Here’s a random idea: give it to Galifanakis.
Are there really people who can’t distinguish between a remake like Brewster’s Millions and taking another crack at a detective hero from a series of novels? Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Hercules Poirot, Mike Hammer, Philip Marlowe—all have had several successful iterations and no one seems to complain too much. Fletch has been the protagonist of almost a dozen successful novels with only one film based on them (Fletch Lives was original material). I’d say he’s way overdue for a second kick at the can.
Is Ryan Reynolds to busy to get attached to this?
OMG that would be perfect casting. I totally agree with you.
So is Fletch going to be some kind of online journalist or a blogger?
OK you would think with the problems surrounding Arthur they would think twice before doing this. I loved Arthur and really liked fletch, but remaking these movies is not only criminal, it’s sad.
Maybe the Egyptians will come for the hollywood production execs next.
How many who have commented here have READ Gregory McDonald’s Fletch novels?
I have.
Several of them are among the most brilliant mystery novels EVER written by ANYBODY.
s sucked. Big time.
A Fletch reboot, I welcome it. The end product depends on the script (and the inevitable re-writes), casting, the director and dozens of other elements and factors. But let me be clear, almost ANYTHING would be better than Fletch and Fletch Lives. Really.
From what I’ve heard, the Underwoods will be financing the projects.
Or was it the Underhills?
Ryan Reynolds would be perfect in this.
I love Fletch
“imagunnagetgenehackmantokickyourarse”
Bring on Fletch.
Why? The first one was lame.
“Fletch” isn’t a bad movie. It’s a great comedy, and without a doubt the high point of Chevy Chase’s career. Yes, “National Lampoon’s Vacation” included.
It differs a great deal from the book that it’s based on, though, as it was developed into a vehicle FOR Chase. That’s where the zany costumes, aliases, and characters come into the picture. But, like an above commenter mentioned, what movie ISN’T different than the book? (See: every James Bond movie using a Fleming title other than “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”)
The whole book series by Gregory Mcdonald is fantastic. Certainly worth a read for those who haven’t ever read one.
I can’t defend “Fletch Lives,” though. What a pile.
please do a good job please do a good job! (my prayer to the gods) i would love to see real justice done in honor of the classics with chevy. i always remain hopeful. :- )
The Fletch movies were an insult to the author’s books. Fletch is a smart-ass, not a baffoon. Please cast this right and make a drama with comedic overtones. Please? Pretty please?
They’ll screw it up. I just know they will.
I think you mean “buffoon” with a “u”. Also, I’m not sure you know what the word buffoon means, because Chevy Chase didn’t play the role as a buffoon as all. He played it like a smart ass, which as you said, is exactly what the character Fletch was in the books.
Let’s remake The Social Network. Wasn’t Fletch made the last time Jerry Brown was Governor? California, the land of yesterday’s dreams.
