EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is rebooting its 1992 hit The Bodyguard, the film that paired Kevin Costner with Whitney Houston and became for its time one of the biggest global hits in studio history with a $411 million worldwide gross.
The film will be scripted by Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, whose action comedy script Family Getaway made the 2010 Black List and is a priority project at Warner Bros. Dan Lin will produce through his Lin Pictures banner, and Mark Bauch is co-producer.
Scripted by Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Mick Jackson, the original was a fairly straight ahead tale of a Secret Service agent (Costner in a Steve McQueen homage, down to his hairstyle) drafted to protect a singing diva whose life has been threatened by a stalker, then falling for her in a way he fears is a distraction from his job. The new version is similar, including the love story, but here the bodyguard will be a former Iraq war veteran who gets the job protecting the star as his first gig after leaving the Army. He discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever. The goal is to take a young female singer with global appeal and give her the platform that The Bodyguard did Houston.
It becomes the second music-driven remake for the studio, which just got a commitment from Clint Eastwood to direct Beyonce. The studio is in the process of landing the male star.
Lin just wrapped Sherlock Holmes 2, and is producing with Kevin McCormick Gangster Squad, which Ruben Fleischer will direct. He is also developing the LEGO Movie, which has Phil Lord and Christopher Miller attached to direct. The scribes are repped by UTA and Mosaic.

Ugh.
I hope this fails miserably. Why don’t you remake Avatar? With Legos.
James Franco and Rihanna.
(Seriously.)
James Franco would detinitely do much better in a remake of “Rebel Without a Cause.”
No one can play the role like Whitney but if I had to really give the role to someone it would be Jennifer Hudson.
I totally agree with you about Jennifer Hudson playing the part. She can sang and belt out a song which is soulful. I think she would be a better fit for Whitney instead of Beyonce, not saying that Beyonce isn’t pretty, but it isn’t about being pretty it’s about acting ability. Jennifer Hudson seems to have more acting experience.
Jennifer Hudson does not have the looks for a whitney Houston Character and She can’t even come close to the singer Whitney was. Whitney’s voice outshines Jennifer anyday. NO NO Jen
Definitely Jennifer Hudson. If not Jennifer, then Beyonce will do. The male star role: George Cloony.
She cant handle the range of whitney’s songs nor will anybody else
I would really like Jennifer Hudson and Ben Affleck to play the actors in the remake of “The Bodyguard”.
Reverse the paradigm and subvert expectations; make it a flick about a female bodyguard (like Jolie or Zoe Saldana) protecting a male music star (please god, not Bieber, but why not Justin Timberlake), updating the pic and doing away with the silly damsel in distress thing.
You started off so well; however, Timberlake has already done features. Why not Justin Bieber (had he himself not done a feature already)? Don’t you sophomoric followers ever get tired of beating up on one of the most talented young men in the business in a very long time? He’s talented, humble, drama FREE, a great example for even the adults in the industry and yet you put him down–but never name a reason. Leave him alone already. Find a new topic, that one’s beyond old.
Since its up to the director and producers to find the talent the movie is a def failure….. The co producer Mark Bauch sent me a script he wrote. One of the worst scripts I ever read. This guy was one of the most talentless arrogant morons
If the loser didnt work for Dan Lin would have thrown him out of the office, for making me read such crap. Dan Lin would be better off hiring interns to do the work. Rhihanna and Channing Tattum, this is going straight to dvd.
I would cast Monica to play whitney
Too soon.
Dear Deadline .com why the producers trying to make the redo of body gurad because they are out of Idea they don’t know other writers that they work their ass off to make a new film or screenplay I think Hollywood producers get a new Idea ,make a very nice film farzin youabian a writer and Director.
Too soon has nothing to do with it. Why are we remaking films that are perfectly good? It’s all about the dollar, but it’s a massive waste of resources to remake something, and it prevents something new being made. If it’s such a great story, just re-release the picture. Let’s repaint the Mona Lisa, or rewrite Pride and Prejudice with Zombies…oh wait, that already happened.
EXACTLY! Why is it necessary to keep doing this? There HAVE to be some wonderful screenplays out there that are just begging toe made? Why are the studio heads so terrified of making something NEW?
Studio heads are terrified of making something new because they have unqualified people looking for good scripts. What a joke, co-producer mark bauch??This guy is a talentless nobody, looked him up online its a joke. what is warner bros thinking, this movie is going to bomb.
Keep Beyonce, Rihanna, GaGa, Aguilera and Katy Perry far away from this.
Exactly! I’ll totally go see this with the right actors – not singers, models -slash- actresses.
@Mar. I dunno slashing a model/actress might make the movie more interesting. But if that’s the case here’s a list of female choices.
Any of the Kardashians
Hillary Duff
Taylor Swift
Lady Gaga.
Jennifer Hudson should be the Female singer. I am not bias but the story line is between a African American Singer and her white bodyguard. Why change it two white actors It will not be the same. I have not decided on the male actor as I have many great actors in mind.
Yes! That’s what makes the Bodyguard more interesting.
I agree with Jennifer Hudson. she is beautiful and talented. How about Ben Barnes as the male lead?? He is beautiful too and I would enjoy a good love scene with the two of them.
Pick Shakira!!!!!!!
Jennifer Hudson. Hands down.
Along with James Van Der Beek; now that’s a movie.
You forgot Jennifer Hudson.
It would be a breathe of fresh air to have Jennifer Hudson play the role Whitney Houston formerly played. She has proven she has the singing chops and acting skills to play this role.
If this role does not go to Jennifer it would be a huge mistake. Hey Jennifer I am routing for you. BTW, you look simply fabulous keep up the good work girl.
Hugs, Alexxi your fan
Jennifer Hudson has proven that she is a FORCE to be reckoned with! She has the “it factor” and should be considered for some romantic lead. Hopefully with her incredible singing voice. How about making her a lounge singer……..?
I tend to agree with you Jennifer Hudson would be a great choice paired along with Matthew McConaughey, LL Cool Jay or Terrance Howard. Just a thought.
In order for this to work:
The bodyguard has to be 30s, super-masculine, intelligent, shredded, with charisma to boot…
The singer has to be 20s, beautiful, edgy, sexy, bitchy yet likeable, primadonna-y, a GREAT actress, and a CURRENT pop superstar….
Um, yeah, these two actors don’t exist.
Don’t remake The Bodyguard.
I onlu could think of one person……. the Queen Beyonce!!!!
I would agree with Beyonce IF she could act her way out of a paper bag…sadly she can’t. However, good for her and her recent voice lessons, (she finally found a good voice coach) they’re paying off.
Taylor Swift & Will Smith– Perfect!
This might just be crazy enough to work. Otherwise, it would have to be Jennifer Hudson, but I’m not sure to pair her with just yet.
No lie as soon as I saw this headline I sent up a little prayer: “Please don’t say Beyonce is attached to the film in any way.”
I’m guessing millions of similar silent prayers were uttered when the project was announced. It’s bad enough that she is about to completely massacre “A Star is Born,” singlehandedly obliterating the long cinelmatic history of that film (Gaynor, March, Garland, Mason, Streisand). I pray they keep her and anyone else who can neither sing nor act away from this one.
I actually think there is room for a LOT of improvement on the original Bodyguard, so I’m happy to see a remake. Whitney was in great voice, but the woman is no actress, so casting a female lead who can actually do both would be a refreshing change. I’d love to see JHud in this.
I agree, but I myself am growing tired of JHud’s overexposure. We need to give the girl a break before she J-Los out. Let’s not forget her poor performance in the flop Sex and the City movie.
Jennifer Hudson was on the 1st SATC movie, the 2nd movie flopped but the 1st one was not. JHud would be the perfect choice to play Whitney Houston’s character.
I think that if you could bring a no name. A person that is seeking to come on the horizon. Someone that is hungry and willing to break into the business. That would be something to look for. All of the actressess, singer, models are great but we are ready for someone new. Call me
Jennifer Hudson?
Dude, it’s going to be Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Duh.
Seriously? Rock bottom, we’ve hit it. Who thought this could be a good idea?
I know right? It’s getting to the point where even complaining about these crappy, unwelcome corporate decisions becomes useless, it’s become so bizarre.
Just stay home, people. Don’t but tix. Don’t rent it. Don’t stream it. It’s the only way to force the studios to start taking more risks on original stories again.
one of them Dan Lin. as a proud chinese man, i’m very UNproud everytime i read an interview with this guy.
not sure about his history, but he’s another businessman who knows nothing about movies.
if you’re young and rich, why wouldn’t you produce movies? wish hollywood had some quota or credential requirement for producers besides knowing how to bring in the $$$ and save $$$.
obviously, this is another terrible movie made strictly for $$$. no passion, no art, no substance…
sorry everybody but if they want the $$$, it must be Lady Gaga, or have Justin Bieber grow out his hair and give him breasts.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
He is also developing the LEGO Movie
hahahaha
Next up: The Silly Putty Movie
Slinky: The Movie is already in pre-production with Michael Bay ready to direct. After Transformers he’s got a lot of ideas that he wants to unleash on the world…one step at a time.
You’ve got to be kidding me! I was not cc’d on the memo.
I’ve got a great cast though: Bieber as the scared starlet and Sandra Bullock, fresh from her oscar win for the Dull side and her less than honorable personal life, as the bodyguard!
Hollywood is going bankrupt of original ideas.
They should remake MY BODYGUARD.
LOL. Yes. Starring Justin Bieber and Usher.
MY BODYGUARD is still in my personal dvd library…( whatever happened to Chris Makepeace?) if they did remake it…they would ruin it.
It would be set in the “hood” instead of a high end Chicago Hotel…and instead of Adam Baldwin beng the “body guard” against Matt Dillon, it would be some chick being the body guard against gang bangers…
They always screw up re-makes….
One word: ugh.
Who as Costner? Jeremy Renner? Ryan Gosling? Ryan Reynolds? Mark Wahlberg? Zac Effron?
Jeremy Renner is too good for this mess. It would be right up Ryan Reyonds alley though.
Shia…. ? I will be staying as far away as I can from Both remakes…
Justin Bieber…??
I think Channing Tatum would be good for the role.
As soon as he learns to act, he’ll be perfect for it.
Precisely.
What about Kevin Costner?
For goodness sake, NOT Zac Effron!
No thanks.
When Whitney sang “I will always love you”, she was singing to her crack pipe.
Your comment was tasteless and unwarranted.
I’m kinda excited for this one.
I heard the story of these screenwriters a few months ago. They sold their spec and then WB told them to look through their entire library and pick one to remake.
Gugh.
the writers must be talented to write a multi-million dollar movie. how come no one is thinking they may come up with a fresh idea?!
Beyond pathetic. There isn’t any talent out there for this schlock.
Wjat’s really great is that all these toy tie in flicks and remakes come on the heals of a year when all the top box office films and most of the Award nominees were spec scripts. Just think how risk averse these clowns would be if those films hadn’t been successful. Never mind. It couldn’t get any worse.
Well, the original made over $400 million worldwide…so, I can see why WB wants to do a remake. No, it’s not too soon to do it.
However, I would cast the two leads differently. What about Jamie Foxx as the bodyguard…and Taylor Swift, or Joss Stone as the singer???
Taylor Swift?? The girl can’t sing or keep her personal life ‘personal’ – sure, she can act…right…NOT! Not to mention her pre-teen lyrics. WB’s lost it for sure with this one. I guess they’ve got to come up with something now that the Potter series is done. This is the best they can do…look at their track record. Where’s the PRE-AOL WB I used to love?
LOL. Two years ago there was talk of this with Rihanna and Channing Tatum. I won’t be surprised if this is the direction they go.
Will still recommend Leona Lewis.
Dan Lin is a parasite, a scumbag, and the least creative man working in hollywood. If you have to let him “produce” something, It makes sense to give him sequels, remakes, and movies based on toys.
Any pop singer who touches this risks being called the next Whitney Houston, which used to be a good thing, lately not so much.
Why do WB and the other studios keep remaking, rebooting and adapting everything in sight?
Because it’s much easier than doing original pics, there’s that unpredictable element of risk in something original. Of course risk is what makes for surprise hits and new franchises. This Bodyguard should be combined with a sequel to Inception the bodyguard should be able to enter the dreams of the celebrity stalker and implant ideas in his head to leave the star alone. That way it can be called The Inception Bodyguard and Leonardo can star in it.
This comment is brilliant.
So Jeff Robinov feels that trimming New Line slate (to 4 films a year) so WB can concentrate on producing and marketing “winners” like this? Where is his head?
Always thought this would be a good project for Dwayne Johnson!
Totally agree. First thing I thought of, he looks good enough, built right, and has the charisma to do it. If anyone can right now, it would be him. And frankly, he could use a nice breakout hit. Seems like a good fit.
Dwayne Johnson canNOT act..what breakout hit?
This already has EPIC FAIL written all over it. The “original” (it wasn’t that original of a plot even back in 1992) has not aged well at all. Watch it today and it is laughable (partly due to the subsequent career slide of Houston and the questionable role choices of Costner).
This new “reboot” is an example of what happens when lawyers and accountants make creative choices for studios.
Yawn. How many remakes of remakes can one make?
Another shitty remake I won’t see. Keep ‘em coming, you geniuses at Warners and Paramount!
In the words of Whitney “CRACK IS WHACK!”
actually, get Whitney to do the remake. *THAT* could be interesting.
Every freaking day, another remake/reboot. Original ideas are not dead, it’s just that the people who call the shots have zero clue what makes a good movie.
