On the heels of Fox unspooling a new promo for Simon Cowell’s The X Factor during the Super Bowl, the network this morning made several X Factor-related announcements.
First off, the winner of the reality singing competition will be awarded a $5 million record deal, which the producers called “the largest guaranteed prize in television history”, with Syco, a joint venture between Sony Music and Cowell. Secondly, all singers and vocal groups 12 and over will be eligible to compete. American Idol this season brought down the lower end of the contestants’ age limit to 15, resulting in an influx of young talent. But, unlike Idol, X Factor doesn’t have upper age limit. “I like the idea that a 12-year-old on this show can compete with an older singer and a singing group,” said Cowell. “I’ve never believed there should be a cut-off age for talent, and we are going to put our money where our mouths are with the $5 million recording contract. I’m doing this show in America because I genuinely believe we can find a superstar.” The show is yet to announce judges, with U.K. singer Cheryl Cole, a judge on the British Factor, considered a frontrunner according by the British press, which also lists U.S. singers Nicole Scherzinger and Katy Perry as contenders.
Auditions for the first season of X Factor begin March 27 in Los Angeles, with Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York/New Jersey and Seattle also set to host auditions. More sign-up information on www.fox.com/theXfactor.
Fox’s reality chief Mike Darnell called The X Factor “a worldwide phenomenon and unlike anything we’ve seen in America.” “The British version is wildly entertaining, but also has a penchant for stirring up controversy. You never know what Simon has up his sleeve, and since he will be working both behind and in front of the camera, the country should brace itself to expect the unexpected.” Indeed, the original X Factor has been involved in numerous scandals involving alleged vote rigging, use of Auto-Tune, etc. As previously announced, Pepsi will serve as an official sponsor of The X Factor. The series is launching in the fall with a promo campaign said to be in the neighborhood of $35 million.

Well, Im glad that it is looking more likely that Cheryl Cole will be on the judging panel of the US X Factor. News of the World said that Fox offered her £10 million with the caveat that they don’t have to pay her if she isn’t a hit with US audiences. Before you start to dismiss this story, remember that News of the World and Fox are owned by Rupert Murdoch. I don’t think he would like it if one of his outlets reported inaccurately on a business transaction involving one of his other media companies. Plus, the Daily Mail is confirming that Cheryl Cole had been offered the job.
yes, Fox will offer 10 million for an unknown, talentless hack like Cole. There are plenty beautiful girls with zero understanding in music and no singing ability in the states, why would they need Cole?
Naturally News of the World has the inside scoop since they probably have been breaking into Simon’s voice mail.
Katy Perry is on tour until October, so she’s not happening.
A $5M record deal?” I wouldn’t pay too much attention to that number as it’s probably loaded with incentives. (i.e., the artists has to sell X number of units to make that $5M. Or they’re signing him to a 30-record deal and the artist will make $600,000/per)
Or they are talking about a 360-deal where touring receipts and merchandising are included. But to think that someone in today’s recording climate is going to sell enough to rate $5M in royalties/sales is a pipe dream.
A “$5 million recording contract”…how much of that will go to the artist and how much will just go back to Simon and his label?
and the grand prize is the opportunity to make Simon Cowell twenty million dollars!
I think Simon is smart enough to see what has happened with Cheryl Cole in the UK and can see how the US will follow suit and she will become the next It Girl the moment she’s announced.
To fill out the remainder of the panel I’d say Sherzinger is a lock since she filled in for Cole in the UK so it’s the Louie Walsh spot I can’t quit figure out who Simon would pick.
Babyface? Sean Combs? David Foster? Will.I.Am? Ryan Tedder?
With auditions kicking off next month I’m hoping they’ll make the announcements soon.
Nicole Scherzinger is unspeakably awful on The Sing Off.
Harry Connick, Jr. was a great mentor on Idol. I’d go with him, if he wanted to do it.
Bring Paula Abdul with you Simon and im there.
Announcing a prize…Lowered age limit…nothing to announce. America’s Got Talent has no age limit and read the fine print how that prize is defined.
Simon is missing the limelight…no news.
Also – X- Factor has not worked internationally. Its been pulled in most countries or at least changed networks…FAIL
None of those other countries had Simon Cowell as the judge.
I am a HUGE fan of the UK version of X-Factor and I definitely want to see this one succeed as well!
Cheryl Cole is stunningly beautiful and the people at FOX would be CRAZY not to get her as one of the judges.
Also, if FOX is smart, they’ll hire Paula Abdul as one of the other judges. Paula would CLEARLY fill in the spot that Louis takes in the British version. People love Paula and Simon’s chemistry as well as Paula’s crazy. Lots of people would tune in to see that alone. If not, I would go with someone equally as crazy… like The Hoffster.
Who could be the fourth judge???
Probably another singer… to fill the Danni slot.
Why should Cheryl Cole get $10 million for just looking good in her outfits, flirting relentlessly with an engaged Simon and having a pretty face? Because that is it folks – nothing else and of course the fact she has Simon Cowell behind her with all his powerful contacts in the music business and his millions to pay anyone that will say ‘I have a girl crush on Cheryl Cole’ or I want to collaborate with Cheryl Cole’ etc, etc. and trying desperately to make her an international star. Mezghan, why do you put up with it?
She is not England’s sweetheart, we are all sick of seeing this woman who gets made a fuss of and there is no justification why. Has she the voice of Celine Dion, Whitney, Mariah? no. What has she really achieved that makes her better than all the other artists? nothing. A fifth member of a girlband, a judge who cannot make a decision without looking at Simon first for reassurance on UK X Factor, turns away talent who PASS auditions and chooses people who FAIL their auditions because they remind her of when she was young. Makes public outbursts live on TV to contestants about issues that have nothing to do with the programme – yeah, she sounds really professional to me and worth $10 million if you have money to throw away. It seems to be set up for Cheryl to win always, with her getting the best acts. Danni won last season with Matt Cardle, yet she is not even mentioned. And let’s not forget Cheryl Tweedy Cole’s criminal conviction for beating up a black woman and it makes you wonder if America is changing the rules and giving Green Cards away to criminals now in 2011? It seems President Cowell can get whatever he wants done with £160 million in the bank, even regarding the laws of the USA.
Nicole Scherzinger appeared on UK X Factor in place of Cheryl Cole and it was so refreshing to hear someone actually making sense and she is more beautiful than Cheryl and brought something else to the show it was worth watching. I also think Paula Abdul wouold be great too. It’s Nicole and Paula for me.
I say get CHER and Tina Turner to become judges- They ROCK and have to ability to help the younger generations to make it more than just a year of success
is there a age limit someone help cause i want to try out and im 13 years old just wondering
So can you be under 12 I need to know fast
im guessing not i think u have to be about 12 or at that age
