Is Fox about to become the network of the Deschanel sisters? Indie movie darling Zooey Deschanel is in negotiations to star in Fox’s untitled single-camera comedy pilot from writer-producer Liz Meriwether, 20th TV and studio-based Chernin Entertainment. Zooey’s sister, Emily, of course stars in the veteran Fox procedural Bones. Both the new pilot and Bones are produced by 20th TV. The Liz Meriwether project, originally titled Chicks and Dicks, is described as a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women. It centers on Jessica, a role that Deschanel is eying, an optimistic but unlucky in love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with 3 juvenile guys.
This would mark the first regular TV role for (500) Days of Summer star Deschanel, who was recently attached to star in and executive produce an HBO half-hour project based on Pamela Des Barres’ memoir I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, which ultimately didn’t go forward. She previously did an arc on Showtime’s Weeds and guest starred opposite her sister in an episode of Bones. On the film side, Deschanel most recently co-starred in the Sundance entry My Idiot Brother.

no. it just means she’s way ahead of the pack. dial up killed newspapers. high speed internet for the masses will kill movies within 10 yrs.

She is the perfect companion to this awful pilot and awful No Strings Attached/Fuckbuddies writer. What schlock. No wonder our industry is dying. We produce absolute garbage.
I don’t get why she keeps getting roles – she’s damn near unwatchable. There’s “quirky” and there’s not being able to deliver a line without doing weird shit with our eyes/voice.
For example, TIN MAN may have not been great TV, but she almost single-handedly brought the ship down with her laughably bad acting. That was a shame.

Zooey Deschanel is apparently the singer-actress version of cilantro. Some people like it, some people can’t stand it.
My wife thinks she’s weird and off-putting, so you’re not alone in finding her unwatchable. I think she’s adorable, and can watch her in just about anything. I’ll watch BONES if she shows up, but beyond that have no real interest in the show.
So I guess they’re making the pilot for people like me rather than people like you. If it can win over enough of us, it’ll do well, and you’ll just watch some other, cilantro-free channel.
I hope she’s smart enough to avoid this horrible, horrible, unfunny, horrible pilot. She should do Iceland. Best comedy pilot I’ve read this season.
ICELAND is a better premise, definitely. C&D is funnier, although painful title. BITCH IN APARTMENT 23 is better than both of them.
That’s the kind of role/show that would fit her. Unfortunately i don’t see people watching this. The premise would work on premium cable,not on broadcast.
All this shows is how little film production is going on. Movie actors, stars even, are doing tv and commercials because they’re just trying to make money.

Complete lack of command of the craft of acting confines her to playing variations of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She was the same character in “All the Real Girls” as “500 Days of Summer” as “Weeds” ad infinitum ad infinitum…
I think she is great but this sounds so mediocre. I’m positive she can do better!

Clearly none of you have read this script – it is easily one of the best pilots I’ve read this year! It is an incredibly strong female lead and with Liz Meriwether (writing) and Jake Kasdan (directing) – I think its a slam dunk…
P.S. Iceland – does this sound like comedy to you? A sad girl mourning the loss of her dead fiance – Laugh riot! I’m sure America would love to come to home & watch a girl getting over the death of a loved one.
Okay, was almost able to get through the whole script. it’s not the worst thing i’ve ever read. she creates fun characters, not original, but fun. and i applaud a writer who dismisses conventional broadcast script standards like Act Breaks. the network’ll know where to put the commercials. it’s not that funny, but it’s single cam so it doesn’t necessarily have to be. and she’s played this character before so zooey should be fine in this role. plus, she’s cute, so i’d check it out if it makes it to series. i’m with man-hater: YO GO, GIRLS!!!
This project sounds generic and doomed–with Chernin you really get a strong whiff of Artists Television Group in terms of the stale, utterly shallow, wannabe “sexy” material they’re pushing. This will be an easy one for Fox to shelve in May.
No more singing please. We get it, your voice sounds old fashioned and dove like. We are officially over it. You jumped the shark with those cotton ads, stay home please.

It’s amazing to me that people constantly complain about the quality of comedy on tv, yet when a great script and name talent come together there is nothing but negativity. Zooey is a hilarious actress (not to mention incredibly attractive) who could really add something special to a project like this. I hope they work her deal out – this is the most exciting cast attachment I’ve seen yet on the comedy side (and I’d love to hear arguments otherwise!)
Dude, it’s because nobody told Liz about act breaks. Or structure. Or character. If you’ve read “fuckbuddies by liz,” then you already know how terribly unfunny this will be. Think “No Strings Attached.”

Wow, what a crappy “single camera” comedy. SHould be another dreadful sit-com with laugh track… Set-up, joke, set-up joke. Obvious comedy. She’s “quirky”… um yeah, but not funny, or engaging or going to be able to pull off this hokum. “it is easily one of the best pilots I’ve read this year!”?? She is a terrible actress with no range whatsoever. She plays variation of the same annoying space cadet character in everything she’s ever been. She’s like a black hole for any drama or comedy a scene might have. Look at me, I’m so kooky!
what could have been going thru her head to attach herself to “I’m With The Band”, a show about the grungy life of groupies? Where could that possibly have gone that would make any sense? The trajectory of the groupie life has never been and never will be glamourous, that’s just pure fiction.
