EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has acquired Scavengers, a script by Chris Baldi that Thor Freudenthal will direct. Freudenthal helmed Diary of a Wimpy Kid for the studio. The film will be produced by Emjag Productions’ Alexandra Milchan and 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Levine. The setup: After their adventurous father dies, three brothers who’ve been estranged discover that in order to collect their inheritance, they will have to go out on a scavenger hunt to find treasure he left behind. Clues bring them back to many of the childhood experiences they shared with their father. Freudenthal is repped by Gersh and The Gotham Group.

Good for Chris Baldi. He is very funny and I really like his other script, what would kenny do.
The first wimpy kid movie was great fun. This script sounds like it could be great. Have fun!
I don’t know what you saw but what I saw was even less than 53% fresh according to RottenTomatoes.com. Yes it was $15 mil in production and probably double that for marketing and that left ~$19 mil in profit. Okay but not great and the 2nd movie better charm the hell out of the audience because I personally thought it was a strong contender for a Razzie. 40% of audience reviews thought it was borderline to POS. Keep making a crap franchise and I smell a lawsuit from either the publisher or the author.
first, that’s not even close to how a studio calculates profit on a film. second, a 15mm movie that grosses 64mm domestic (and 11mm reported publicly – often there’s much more that sites like boxofficemojo don’t know about) is a piece of business that studios will jump at over and over again. third, it’s a kids’ movie, you don’t have to like it, but they sure like the dvd sales and nickelodeon buys.
I like how you start off with “I don’t know what you saw, but what I saw…” as if you actually saw the movie yourself. But you didn’t. You quoted Rotten Tomatoes.
I was pleasantly surprised by the first Wimpy Kid movie. I never read the books so I went in with no expectations, but I found it a cut above most live-action family films.
Great script, great package, and Fox needs a hit. Makes sense.
How’d your kids like it? How much did they like Kinney.s books?
You must have the cheese touch
Thor Freudenthal has the coolest name ever.
