2929 Productions is financing Tim And Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, a comedy by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim that’s being produced by Funny Or Die creators at Gary Sanchez Productions. The film company sent out a press release with what I felt was a lame attempt to humorously paint itself as the priciest film ever. There are interesting details, like that 2929 money men Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner will appear in the film. I invited them to furnish some serious details this morning, but they never came. So Deadline readers can eyeball the original knee-slapper of a press release and decide: Funny or Die?
2929 Productions with Gary Sanchez Productions and Funny or Die Begin PRODUCTION ON Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie
MAGNOLIA PICTURES WILL DISTRIBUTE THE EPIC FILM, GREAT JOB!
Los Angeles – March 14, 2011 – 2929 Productions announced today it is financing Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, the feature film debut of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, with Gary Sanchez Productions and its Funny or Die Films banner co-producing. Heidecker and Wareheim will write, direct and star in what is undoubtedly the most expensive production in cinematic history. In addition, 2929’s sister company Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the film, which is shooting throughout the month of March in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California.Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie is a star-studded comedy created by the prolific team of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, best known for their five seasons of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” which have aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Numerous celebrity cameos will be featured, as well as the beloved cast of regular characters that appear on “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”
“We are very excited to be a part of this very expensive film,” said Heidecker. “We are professional boys and we’ll use the money wisely,” added Wareheim.
Wagner/Cuban co-owner and 2929 Productions CEO Todd Wagner said: “We were initially apprehensive of the unprecedented price tag of the film, but apparently we agreed to it after having a drink with Tim and Eric. Actually, it’s all a little bit fuzzy. Regardless, we now realize that it would be foolhardy not to participate in what is sure to be the grandest entertainment ever presented to mankind.” Wagner and business partner Mark Cuban are also reported to have cameos in the film.
“Letting Todd and Mark be in the film seemed like the least we could do considering they’re investing so much of their personal fortunes in the project,” said Heidecker and Wareheim.
Gary Sanchez Productions’ co-founder Will Ferrell remarked that “You can’t put a price on creative excellence and we didn’t… maybe we should have, but we didn’t,” with GSP co-founder Adam McKay adding that “There are six billion people in the world, so if we can get every sixth person to see this movie, we break even. If they tell a friend, we’ll do well, quite well.”
The billion dollar price tag is far and away the most money paid for any film, more than three times the reported budget of Avatar. With 2929 Productions, Gary Sanchez Productions (run by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy) is producing through its “Funny or Die Films” adjunct banner. GSP has produced such films as The Goods, The Foot Fist Way and the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg cop comedy The Other Guys.
Under their Abso Lutely Productions banner, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim have produced five seasons of their popular experimental comedy show “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. In addition to TEASGJ, they have created the television show “Tom Goes to the Mayor” for Adult Swim, as well as the online comedy titles “Tim and Eric Nite Live” and “Stephen and Steven” for Superdeluxe and Comedy Central. Dave Kneebone and Jon Mugar will be producing for Abso Lutely Productions.

Press releases are not really the best insight into a movie’s potential…and I’m pretty sure Gary Sanchez is not an actual person, it’s the name of Ferrell and McKay’s Prod Co.
No Mike, it’s funny. I see you’re not a fan of spoofs and goofs.
No–it’s not funny. And neither is their lame adult swim show.
No- you’re a stupid douche.
Probably the least funny and talented individuals in this business. The FOD’s are terrible on HBO and this movie will bust for sure. They definitely do not have a following enough to fill theaters. I’ll bet all the chips on that one!
Tim and Eric have never been funny and their movie will bomb.
They are the emperor’s new clothes of comedy and I’m the boy who realizes they aren’t funny and never will be.
The press release is funnier than the movie will be.
Mike is right this is lame and the movie will be worse.
5 seasons of TV; a feature deal with A-list celeb attachments; repped by Greg Cavic…
Jelly, anyone?
No Gil, it is YOU with the problem of having the WRONG opinion on what comedy is. You need to get out more, read more, educate yourself in what REAL comedy is and realize that this press release is SO not funny. IT makes me want to watch Saturday’s SNL on a loop while punching myself in the neck.
Dear Adam McKay –
Since you’re in the film business now, you should know that if 1 billion people saw a movie that costs a billion dollars, you’d do better than breakeven.
Here’s hoping that your math isn’t the only thing funny about this movie.
pass
Sweet berry wine, this movie is going to beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee good. Praise Hosana!
But how do you really feel about it, Mike?
The brilliance of tim and eric’s comedy is in these comments alone. Most of you rascals just don’t get it. Praise rang dipkin!!
Why not do a video press release that would only be on Funny or Die these written press releases are obsolete now. This tells me that they really don’t know what’s funny and what’s not funny.
2929 is still in business?
They sure have worked their way down the totem pole effectively if this is what they are doing.
5 seasons at $25,000 an episode is hardly impressive. I’m sure Greg cavic is rolling around in all his pennies right now. Let’s talk after the bust moron.
Good call. He represents all the hot young comics out there.
Yer a genius.
Mike might not get it, but I showed this press release to my Dad and he thought it was a very funny goof and a spoof.
Btw, I appreciate that some people haven’t caught up yet, but I can’t do much if you’re not coming to see Wharf.
What about P’kard?
SPAGHETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
‘Spaghett!’ indeed…which is why this shallow kiddie pool of absurdist humor will not sustain itself through a feature film.
Further evidence: the Gary Sanchez folks producing it. They are seasoned professionals with admirable success in this random/wince worthy humor bit-ness and even they seem to have trouble creating more than mere moments in their films.
this movie will not be seen by anyone and fail at the box office. after all, it is being released be magnolia pictures. lets all do the math together: 2929 + magnolia = bomb
Tim and Eric are about as funny as the things you scrape off your shoe after a long walk through the dog park. And yeah…I “get” the joke. I full well realize what they’re trying to do. They just dont do it very well. I hope this movie kills their “careers” and then they can go off and rot in obscurity alongside Tom Green on the scrap heap of comedy history.
I like how you say you get the joke but you never explain what it is. You obviously don’t get the joke.
Ya blew it! You’re a real waste.
I’ll admit that I’m not hip and cool enough to get Tim and Eric. Steve Bruell is hilarious, as are Tairy Greene and Tayne – but that’s because Reilly, Galifianakis and Ruud are hilarious. Beyond that, I have no idea why these are the guys everyone loves. Is it some meta-joke about comedy?
You win, hipsters. You made this square scratch his head and say, “huh?” Toast your Pabsts in victory for another one.
PS. Your favorite band sucks.
rascal flats so does not suck..
Three words: “check it out.”
“What is this, ice?”
I say that all the time. Hilarious! Thos arguing against this films success is just a cynical asshole that take life too seriously. Get a life.
I love it when people state as fact that something is or is not funny. Like kid at your party kid telling you to play some “real music.” It’s subjective. If you’re not into it, it’s not some big conspiracy perpetrated on you to make you feel uncool – it’s just not your thing. Comedy, like food, comes in many different flavors. If you don’t like Thai food, don’t eat it but please don’t argue that nobody else really likes it either and that the restaurant should be torn down.
What is truly funny to me is when people don’t understand or appreciate humor like Tim and Eric. Rather than acknowledging that there are many different types of audiences with varying tastes, and that (gasp!) there may be something that doesn’t appeal to them but DOES to other, instead of accepting this they feel the need to declare the material not funny and to villify those who appreciate it.
Stop whining if you don’t get the jokes. There are those who do and appreciate it.
