SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 3, 2011) – Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the 3D theatrical launch of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace now has an official release date – February 10, 2012! Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences – from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi. Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Why? Can someone not stop this man from shitting in our brains any further?
You do realize that you don’t have to go see it, right?
I won’t be.
This is going to be a meme for late night jokes, etc. over the next few days I’ll bet. I’m a total Lucas apologist, and I’m still can’t get excited about this. I didn’t hate it at first, and it has it’s moments, but over time it’s become one big “meh?” for me. It may in some senses be considered the most “disappointing” movie ever, even for a die-hard fan like myself.
CAN’T WAIT! Garbage always looks better in 3-D!!
Finally, a movie that is three-dimensional and two-dimensional at the same time!
Joke King approves.
Best. Post. Ever.
Haaaaahaha Michael, you have made me “lol” good sir. I salute you.
Michael +1. Hilarious.
Wait, TPM had two dimensions?
Perfectly articulated.
Who gives a fuck…
And yet, people will line up in droves to see it.
We are talking about “Phantom Mennce”…. people are not that dumb to fall for this stinker again.
for the love of god, why?!!! i am now convinced that george lucas is in fact the emperor.
Cool, but time the superior trilogy started getting revamped in 3D. I can’t wait to see Hayden’s chops come to life before my eyes.

Lucas is a d*@k. He’ll spend all that cash and time to fix up that piece of junk into 3D, but he won’t fix the originals so that they can be on blu-ray (i.e., non-special editions).
He sucks.
The REAL reason Lucas has tried so hard to bury the originals? His ex-wife gets a piece of the profits on them… but not the “special editions” (which are changed just enough to legally qualify as “new” films.
I’ve read the same thing. Note that they were only included on the last go-round of DVDs on the second disc – as “Bonus Features”.
I’m sure the atrocious quality with which they were presented was also vital to maintaining the legal definition of them as “Bonus Features” somehow.
Am I reading this correctly: “the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material”?
I feel sorry for whoever has to do that. I’ve only seen TPM once and that was one time too many.
OK, good to know. Now when are the good Star Wars movies coming out in 3D?
they don’t exist.
There is nothing funnier than listening to George Lucas spout on and on about typical leftist tripe, such as the government, the environment, tax cuts fir the rich, etc., when this guy is the biggest Capitalist-pig alive, and has been that way since the 1970′s. Lucas’ history with the studio system and everything he has done in selling the same thing over and over again is well-documented. I have no problem with what he does because all people have to do is not buy any of it if they are against it. But to listen to Lucas act like the biggest leftist Socialist while everything he actually does is pure right wing Capitalist pig is too much hypocrisy for even me to bear, and I am a lawyer.
It’s too bad they didn’t teach you how to write intelligibly in law school Troll. Take it back to the Fox News site.
isn’t this the piece of shit I wasted $10 on to see at the Chinese? god it’s sad what he did to that franchise.
On the plus side, 3D can’t possibly make this movie any worse than it already is.
Wanna bet?
We need to get rid of the glasses and go with multi plane viewing for 3D. It would look better and it wouldn’t hurt out eyes do damned much.
Give me depth of view and not just stuff popping out at me for stupid childish shock factor. I want to see a movie not some Capt Eo wannabee film.
Lucas will do anything to make more money from suckers. Jar Jar Binks stinks in 2-D he’ll be even more annoying in 3-D. This was the worst of the Star Wars movies it was awful but George will make another hundred million or more in profit because people will spend their money on it.
Meso stinkso?
3-D-D – the extra ‘d’ is for doodoo.
I’d take the crapfest The Phantom Menace 3D over the even bigger crapfest Avatar any day of the week.

Jar Jar Binks in 3D? Great. Time for the nightmares to begin. Again.
“…with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.”
One of the great unintentionally funny press releases of our time. “Artistic intentions” and Episodes 1-3 are words that don’t usually collide unless you are insane.
Are you questioning the artistic integrity of Jar Jar Binks, and that slug thing voiced by Brian Blessed that constantly wobbled its huge cheeks as it spoke in Pig Latin? The nerve!
Mr. Lucas has apparently forgotten that that ADD style of editing does NOT work in 3-D. It takes the human eyes an average of 5-6 seconds to re-adjust every time there’s a cut. The original trilogy will survive the conversion, but Chs. 1-3 won’t. This is a fiasco waiting to happen.
this won’t add dimension to the plot or characters, right?
I’m going to Disneyland instead. No JarJar. Mercifully shorter. The seats move. No sticky floors. And all at a comparable price, 3-D glasses included. The pod race was the only reason to go, right?
George makes his money from licensing. 3D Star Wars sells more toys.
And, George also knows his market are gamers who care little about story and character. They only care about visual effects, action and visual imagery. Whether you like Star War or not…it certainly satisfies the millions of young people who basically live inside their computers and games.
It is what it is..
I WANT to argue with this post, but I can’t find a way to. I’m a gamer, like Star Wars (adored the OT) but I tend to go see films for their plot. That being said, the only reason I’ll go see Ep. 1 again is because all I can think is “pod racers in 3D will be awesome”! I freely acknowledge that that makes me a little sad and possibly pathetic. I’m just not sure I care because, well because pod racers in 3D.
I cannot wait to experience the mediocrity in all 3 dimensions.
Yousa people see my movie? Yousa people gonna die?
(I am going to attempt to post a comment even though my posts get pulled down from this site)
This sounds like a great idea: take the worst film ever made and convert it to 3D. Great business decision! The Force is telling me this will crash and burn.
Terrible idea though it may be, artistically, it’s the 14th highest grossing film of all time. Not a bad business decision at all.
Bad movie? Yup. Biggest let down to fans? You bet. Worst film ever made? Go watch White Wall, Saw 3D, The Blair Witch Project 2 or Avatar and rethink that one
Hey Guys, This Film Is Not Out Yet…
Cmon think it will be better than it was before. Cmon IT HAS TO BE…
