EXCLUSIVE: At a time when the Hollywood movie star landscape is being made over with new faces, Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson is cementing his place in this new order. He has been offered two lead roles in high profile films with strong scripts and A-list directors, in parts that have been pursued by all the young guys. I believe he’ll do both films.
I’m told that Johnson has been offered one of the two male leads in Savages, the Oliver Stone-directed drama about two best friend pot growers who share a gorgeous lady and a huge problem: their pot is so good that a Mexican drug cartel has kidnapped their gal and will kill her if the growers don’t go to work for the cartel. That pic, which has a script by Shane Salerno and Don Winslow (who wrote the novel on which the movie is based) will shoot in June. Jennifer Lawrence is Stone’s first choice to play O, the kidnapped free spirited sexpot, but her commitment to The Hunger Games (Deadline told you last Friday that was happening) has made her participation uncertain at the moment.
Johnson has also been offered the romantic lead role alongside Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina, the adaptation of the Tolstoy classic tragic love story that has a script by Tom Stoppard and will be directed by Atonement helmer Joe Wright for Working Title. That film will likely shoot in the fall, so Johnson ought to be able to do both films. He also played the young John Lennon in Nowhere Boy.

Stone is a limp horse in my opinion. After that Wall Street sequel I will never see a movie with his name attached. I can’t do it. Its a waste of time. I know that I’ll be disappointed. Whatever talent he had in the 80′s and 90′s has been long gone. His last movie of note was Nixon and that was 15 years ago. He should be knocking on HBO’S door, begging them for a mini series deal.
Go with Anna Karenina, Keira Knightley’s so hot!!! Plus, Oliver Stone hasn’t made a good film in years. WS2 stunk to the point of being unwatchable.
Top notch, Savages sounds hokey. Oliver Stone has been sorely lacking for me lately. Haven’t liked anything of his in a long time. Anna Karenina is the better bet, but have we not done enough variations of these stories already. I like Joe Wright so it’s got that going for it.
The smartest thing Oliver Stone ever did was getting involved with Don Winslow’s tough, balls-out novel Savages and I really hope he doesn’t screw it up. There are so many great moments in that novel! Stone’s last few films from Alexander (which bankrupted an entire company) to W to the horribly disappointing Wall Street sequel show a filmmaker who has lost his touch and is out of step with the culture. Savages represents a major opportunity to get his mojo back with a hot book and strong young cast and I hope he puts down his demons, quiets the “yes Oliver” men he surrounds himself with and digs in and makes a great film which is fully capable of doing. I am rooting for a return to the type of culturally defining films Oliver Stone was known for.
He’s even younger than Keira at 21 but when the fire is hot…new faces take over when you’re not looking.
But then again, Vronsky is supposed to be younger than Anna. I read it a long time ago, but if my memory serves me well, Vronsky is a twentsomething and Anna is in her early thirties.
Anyway a Wright-Knightley reunion is promising as it is, but if you add a Stoppard-screenplay…it could be Knightley’s first Oscar, probably at least Wright’s first nomination (one he should have received years ago) and Stoppard should emerge as the one to beat in the adapted screenplay category. Hunch, I know…
Savages = Harold and Kumar go to Mexico
hehe
Tom Stoppard and Joe Wright is an Academy Award combo.
Good to see Johnson doing well.
Why Stone stopped writing his movies? I mean, he wrote/co-wrote some of the best films, makes no sense to me.
Woah i did not knew that Wright and Knightley will work together again, and on Anna Karenina? Oh my, it could be stunning, or awful! Im excited about it though.
Basically. But envisioned by Stone.
Anyone knows where they will film Anna Karenina?
London and Russia
are you sure about Russia? Prague or Budapest is not an option?
I don’t think Garbo was a great actress, but it’s bizarre she didn’t win an Oscar for Anna Christie (although she was better in the German version). I always wonder if an actress starting out today could get away with never giving an interview…
