Adria Petty, the daughter of singer Tom Petty, has been set to make her narrative feature directing debut on Suffocate, a Ben Olson-scripted thriller for Radar Pictures. Petty has directed commercials campaigns for McDonald’s, Target and Converse and helmed videos for Beyonce, Regina Spektor and Anjulie. She directed the documentary Paris, Not France, which played the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, and directed a recent Live in London concert film with Spektor. Suffocate is a thriller about a group of city workers who enter a hoarder’s condemned brownstone and find it loaded with deadly traps, and an unrelenting killer. The group is forced to use their wits–and demolition tools–to stay alive. Petty is repped by Gersh and Kaplan/Perrone.

How exactly does directing commercials for McDonalds, Target and Converse translate into “following famous people around with a bag full of money?” Keep in mind that there are a great many television commercial directors who would kill to have a shot at a campaign for any of those three companies. If you know anything about the television commercial production business, you would know that the fact her last name is Petty had nothing to do with her getting those jobs.
don’t pre-judge. after all, she may be very talented. the only way to know will be by watching the film itself. for example, just look at Duncan Jones.
I don’t have any problem with her getting her shot with the commercial and music vid track record, but why one earth remake “The Collector” or Midnight Man, or whatever the hell that movie ended up being called.
