Cable networks having the freedom to develop, greenlight and schedule projects on their own schedule is great, but sometimes it might be better to have the pressure of a looming May broadcast upfront presentation to get big deals done. Like locking in Matthew Weiner for AMC’s Mad Men, which would pave the way for the cable network to officially greenlight a fifth season of the show. After months of negotiations over compensation (Weiner had been asking for a lot more than what he got under the a rich
pact he inked with Mad Men producer Lionsgate TV and AMC 2 years ago), the sides are said to be finally (and slowly) nearing a deal.
But with negotiations pushing into late March, Season 5 of Mad Men probably won’t be able to launch in the summer as the show normally does. The period drama usually premieres in late July. Two years ago, when Weiner didn’t close his deal until mid-January, the season premiere was pushed to August. It’s safe to say that the delay will be even bigger this year. Idled by the unplanned hiatus, Mad Men star Christina Hendricks recently booked a movie, Seconds of Pleasure. As for Mad Men‘s Emmy chances, they won’t be affected by the delay. The series’ fourth season is up for nominations this year and it is certain that the upcoming Season 5 will also be eligible for Emmys next year.

Will the show be nominated for an Emmy because of the delay.
Great news! But I can’t wait too many months.
This is one of the most over-hyped darlings of TV critics. The reason yet again, is because it’s at heart a vapid indictment of capitalism and thus the United States.
The rest is just a costume period piece with a huge amount of style and overacting passing itself off as drama.
It’s nothing but soap opera for aspiring young socialists who keep a Prius and a Yukon in their garages.
Someone’s bitter.
Tiger Blood.
It’s damned good storytelling is what it is. It doesn’t pass itself off as drama, it is drama. I don’t think it indicts capitalism, but even if it does, so what? If it indicted socialism, the progressive movement, conservative movement or the left, so what? Good storytelling shouldn’t be constrained by either brand of social values. Don’t be a crybaby and throw your little tantrum just because you don’t think it reflects your point of view. Grow a pair.
Lighten up, Francis.
Actually, TiminPhx, judging a work of art solely for its political content is about as Marxist as you can get!
You obviously have no idea what makes great drama. The characters are rich, the story lines are incredibly detailed and the long form narrative and perfect pacing makes for one of the best shows on TV. Sorry you grew up not being allowed to watch what you wanted and made to go to church against your will.
What in the hell are you talking about? I am very conservative when it comes to certain issues. However, the show isn’t liberal propaganda. Take your tin foil hat off.
Well thanks to this article now I know the ENTIRE plot of the film, so i guess I won’t have to see it or read the novel. The never-ending logline…
Why do AMC and Weiner do this dance every year? You’d think AMC Would keep Weiner locked in. After all, MadMen is its signature drama.
TimInPhx, I’ve been waiting for people like you to move to Alaska and establish your own conservative Christian homeland so you won’t have to watch the TV programs that us worldly, stylish, thinking people enjoy. Like MadMen.
Yes, MM’s Emmy chances will be hindered by the delay, since it normally has a powerful advantage of airing new episodes (albeit eligible for the following Emmy year) during the voting period for the awards. So it’ll likely get plenty of nominations but the playing field will be evened with shows like The Good Wife, which airs “in season”.
That’s the stupidest thing I’ve read all day. Do you think that the people voting are little children who can be swayed by episodes that have no bearing on their decision?
The Good Wife is garbage and will never win anything. Mad Men’s only competition in the fall will be Boardwalk Empire and possibly The Killing.
That’s pretty big competition for Mad Men. And don’t forget Game of Thrones.
“The Good Wife is garbage and will never win anything.”
Keep telling yourself that. The Good Wife is the only good drama on network television. And it won an Emmy last year.
Breaking Bad is the best show on TV. Boardwalk is overhyped. Mad Men is sublime.
Too bad about the delay. Then again, Breaking Bad has been set to return later than usual for awhile now (not unlike a tweaker, I’m jonesing for some fresh Cranston and Paul right about now) so I’m sure AMC will just drop it in Mad Men’s summer spot without missing a beat.
Fingers crossed that The Killing is watchable enough to help bridge that gap.
Boardwalk Empire has better writing.
Why the hate?
Boardwalk Empire has great writing, but so does Mad Men. Personally, I think Mad Men’s writing is the stronger of the two.
The best writing I’ve seen on a new show this year has to be Shameless.
give those cheap Lionsgate earthworms hell, Matt – they deserve it – take em’ for every last dime
I hope he will be locked down for seasons 5 & 6 so we don’t have to go through this AGAIN next season!
Season 6 will likely be the final one, so this could be the last contract dispute between Weiner, AMC and Lionsgate.
what someone should do is a series about the world of advertising.
one of my patients got me hooked on madmen; remember Bewitched from the 60′s; this is like that but authentic, detailed, has character depth and oh, did i say authentic? it’s riveting to watch the business men do business without cell phones, computers etc.. the storyline is clear and concise even when it goes flashes into the past.
