UPDATE 11AM: The upcoming fifth season of Mad Men is now slated to debut in March 2012. That is 17 months from the series’ fourth season finale. While the protract
ed negotiations between Mad Men creator/ exec producer Matt Weiner and AMC/Lionsgate TV led to the acclaimed series’ pushed production start and, in turn, caused the show to miss its original July premiere date, the new March return date is not directly tied to the contract talks. According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, Weiner had been actually pushing for a shorter gap between Seasons 4 and 5 and had stated that he could get Season 5 produced and delivered on budget for a 2011 premiere. However, I hear AMC’s argument was that it has now 5 original series to accommodate and its next available slot for Mad Men was in March 2012. Mad Men was AMC’s first series, which put the cable network on the original programming map. Since then, AMC has successfully launched several other series, most recently The Walking Dead, which supplanted Mad Men as the network’s highest-rated show.
PREVIOUS 8AM: Despite not having a deal with Mad Men creator-executive producer Matt Weiner yet, AMC is officially moving ahead with a fifth season of the Emmy-winning period drama, exercising its option with the series’ producer Lionsgate TV. (The cable network made a similar move two years ago when, along with Lionsgate, it was again embroiled in difficult renegotiations with Weiner.) Because of the protracted talks with Weiner, referred to in a statement by AMC as “key non-cast negotiations,” the premiere of Season 5 is being pushed from the summer to early next year. Here is the full statement: “AMC has officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate. While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012.”
Weiner is poised to become the highest-paid showrunner on basic cable with a new mega deal that would pay him close to $30 million over three years. But the lengthy negotiations, which have put Season 5′s start of production on hold, may have hit a snag in the final stretch. As we reported last night, Weiner is objecting to three things AMC/Lionsgate are asking for: integrating product placement into the series, cutting two minutes from each episode’s running time in favor of more commercials, and eliminating/reducing two regular cast members to save money. Meanwhile, also factoring into the negotiations is the pending spinoff of AMC, IFC, We and Sundance Channel into a standalone unit by parent company Rainbow Media.

Keep in mind that “Mad Men” improved its ratings last season. I suspect AMC lapped up the cash “The Walking Dead” pulled in and think they can straddle the critical-commercial line more strategically now. Yes, Weiner is being a little impervious. But to ask him to reduce two regular characters exclusively because of money? That goes too far.
AMC needs to remember why so many people have lined up behind its brand.
Bloomer, no disrespect intended, but I believe you mean imperious, not impervious.
Ha indeed
Is January Jones a movie star? The show is about Don D. and the agency. Her character could die in a car wreck and he could find himself a single dad and it would be fine. Her B plot took away from the energy of his story. It’s about the Mad Men (and Peggy)!
That really upsets me. Mad Men is such a great treat during the summer. VERY few shows are on the same level in every aspect. People scream low ratings but the show is iconic and the branding is genius, not to mention resuscitated the network. There’s plenty of product placement on the show and the commercials are long enough as is.
So what if Weiner wants $30M? He’s paving the way for creators to get paid bigger bucks for living, eating, and breathing a show. And how about launching several careers while he’s doing it? Get your money Weiner.
Guess it’ll be DVD reruns until 2012 but my friends and I will be waiting.
Seriously, a whole year?? Who do they think they are, The Sopranos?
Does Weiner REALLY need to make $30 million? How about he shave off a few to keep the other two cast members. AMC wants more commercials because they need more income to pay that insane salary.
AMC/Lionsgate wants “integrating product placement into the series, cutting two minutes from each episode’s running time in favor of more commercials, and eliminating/reducing two regular cast members to save money.”
Studios and networks give great creative notes.
Best way to save money on two cast members is to cut Hamm and Jones.
There AMC I just saved you A LOT of money.
You’re welcome.
I think Lions Gate makes the DVD money, no?
Mad Men is great, but until AMC broadcasts in HD on DirecTV, I’ll continue to pirate it…in HD. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
I don’t support pirating, Amazon offers it less than 24 hours after it airs…HD is the only way to watch it
Lionsgate/AMC should show their pimp hand to that greedy Matt Weiner!
so BRETT, what exactly is your job title over at AMC? stop being a company shill.
Mad Men rescued a dying network, and has allowed AMC to even have a chance at Walking Dead. It is quality television, ratings be damned. Weiner has an upper hand and he knows it, so he’ll wait to get a favorable deal. AMC is playing hard ball by claiming to not have a spot for it, ok theyre going to try out something new. Hell on wheels snicker, snicker….thats Rubicon c2011. Those new shows will tank and theyre going to be counting the days till MM comes back and rueing the fact that they made it wait so long.
I understand the way it works, every successful show costs more as it goes along, the cast salaries especially, but LG kills it on DVD sales, and in a few years there will be syndication rights as well. If you HAD to…had to eliminate or reduce cast members, well lets face it Harry Crane is comic relief and a little less Ken Cosgrove/Lane Pryce/Bert Cooper wouldnt be terribly missed. For my taste, January Jones could be eliminated all together, and the show instantly becomes even better…but I know theyll never do that.
Well, AMC does have enough content to fill the time gap. Love Mad Men, but I have plenty to watch while it’s off the air, but I have all 4 seasons on BD. Hopefully this gives Directv some time to finally get their act together and get AMC HD.
Sounds like AMC is getting ready to dump the series. They’re probably gearing up other series to fill the gap. I don’t think Mad Men will go beyond this season 5.
Do these enormous delays between seasons turn others off as much as they do me?
It’s a disgrace that the Weiner douche thinks he’s actually worth $30 million when the most reason season was abysmal and the show barely gets any viewers. If it was on network, it would have been canceled after one barely-rated episode. And with certain cast members like Jon Hamm booking movie roles left and right, I doubt everyone will be back next season as they’ll have better things to do with their time.
30 million for Matt Weiner. Wow!! That’s all I can say Wow.wouldn’t want to be the studios or agents who have to renegotiate contracts for showrunners of hit shows. That said, it is the best show on TV right now. 30 Rock fell apart, Boardwalk Empire is good, but that’s all and Modern Family isn’t as funny or fresh aa it was last season.
I agree somewhat.
I watched 10 episodes of Boardwalk, I really wanted to like it, but I just found it HBO formalistic–the same story/same dialogue (if you can call bad language dialogue) with different settings and actors–boring.
Modern Family I find that every other episode is funny although lately it’s been every other other other episode. The last one I didn’t care for so maybe the next. If MF were canceled I wouldn’t care at all.
the negotiations have nothing to do with losing cast members. that’s matt weiner’s spin to try to gain the actors good graces since he’s kept them out of work for so long. then they will all hve to kiss his ass for thinking he saved their jobs. what a joke. it’s all about more $$ for him. no cast member is at risk of losing their job….just Matt Weiner is..
I like mad men, but the praise for the show is a little much. Mad Men is a well written soap opera. I liked Season 4 but it’s been off the air for so long that I’ve forgotten about it. Frankly if it went off the air forever I really wouldn’t care. If it does come back in 10 years oh excuse me 17 months I’ll watch it if I still remember it.
Weiner getting paid $30 million, another ridiculous salary but what else is new.
Yes, MM is overrated, it’s not the Sopranos by a long shot. But it is a truly good show that appeals to people who have a brain in their heads and that is so rare. At times, the writing is sublime and wonderful. Most shows that people genuflect about really are pretty mediocre but are considered smart by virtue of being modestly better than the absolute garbage that dominates the airwaves. $30 mil is a ridiculous amount of money, to be sure, but it’s nice to see a writer being overpaid as opposed to an athlete or an actor. Or the thing that calls itself Charlie Sheen.
I agree -it is nice to hear that someone that actually uses their mind is getting paid $30 million as opposed to their body or just showing up with their body.
” Mad Men was AMC’s first series, which put the cable network on the original programming map.”
Wasn’t “Remember WENN” from back in the 90′s AMC’s first series?
*crickets chirping* keep words being “on the map” not in the Bermuda Triangle
and The Lot, which ran from ’99-’01.
Mad Men isn’t AMC’s first series….
So AMC have pushed back mad men to next year just to get back at Weiner. If it wasn’t for this show no one would have heard of AMC.
The last season of mad men was just brilliant, except for the disappointing season finale. I lost interest in the walking dead after the first episode and boardwalk empire doesn’t have the rich/perplexing/complicated characters that draw me into mad men. At least new eps of breaking bad return soon.
It’s the best dramatic series on television by far…there’s a reason it’s a cultural phenom disproportionate to its ratings.
and MAD MEN without Matt Weiner ? i’ve got three words for anyone that thinks that’s a good idea: Ren & Stimpy.
Arguably one of the best written scripted dramas on television (regardless of broadcast or cable) and AMC can’t find a slot for it? Really?!? That seems really hard to believe.
Yeah, we’d all like it in its Sunday night slot – makes Mondays a lot easier to bear. But shows move slots all the time.
Programming like Mad Men turned AMC into a real destination, not just another cable channel that runs old movies. AMC’s suits are not sounding all that smart – what, did Comcast buy them too?
Who cares if AMC make money or the audience is small or the writer is overpaid.
Mad Men is the very best of TV. The quality of the writing and acting is unmatched. Enjoyment is it’s own reward.
if Mad Men does get cancelled, what about the syndication rights for reruns?
