EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Adam Shankman is heavily courting Oscar-nominated The Fighter star Amy Adams to join Rock of Ages, playing the journalist who falls into a bedroom romp with Tom Cruise’s decadent rock star character, Stacee Jax. This is the role that Shankman offered to Anne Hathaway, but her schedule playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises got in the way. Adams was given a new draft of the script by Shankman. She would play an uptight journalist who intends to eviscerate Stacee Jax with an expose. A seduction ensues instead, and after they duet to the Foreigner song I Want To Know What Love Is, nature takes its course.
It might be an interesting opportunity for Adams to belt out 80s tune-age as she continues her quest to star in a biopic of iconic 60s singer Janis Joplin. Adams also sings in the upcoming Disney film The Muppets. For what started as a small off-Broadway stage musical, Rock of Ages has turned into a happening film to be part of, and one that Warner Bros just set for a June 1, 2012 summer release. Shankman and New Line have locked Cruise (who also belts out Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead Or Alive), Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand in key roles, and Julianne Hough in the young female lead. He has been testing male leads, with an open call set in Burbank on Saturday. We should know by early next week if Shankman’s courtship of Adams leads to a deal, but Deadline wanted to beat his itchy Twitter finger.

Gees, so many reasons to hope this movie never gets made. Tom Cruise as a rock star? Julianne Hough?
The journalist doesn’t sing The Foreigner song in the show. The lead female, Sherri, does. The journalist and the “Wanted” song are used to introduce the Jaxx character to set him up as an obstacle for Sherri and Drew’s love story after Sherri gets seduced.
The Post-Potter Period @ Warners is looking like a cold, dark time.
I still cannot get over my disappointment of the casting of Sherri. I am hoping she is not as terrible as I think she will be.
Julianne Hough is the perfect actress to play Sherri, she will be the stand out star of this movie! Adam Shankman said her audition for the part was absolutely the best he had ever seen! She is going to surprise a lot of people.
Scientists have not yet developed instruments powerful enough to measure the level of cheese this movie is going to reach. I cringe at the mere thought.

It seems to read that TC is playing just a decadent old man.
He is playing that parody of Joel Silver a little to far up the ladder of belief. Amy Adams is should not place herself in the crudeness of the scene. Sounds fun on paper, but the reality of TC’s over-amped debauchery in the of role of (intended or unintended) aging rock star sounds putrid. It won’t be subtle-it will be shot out of a canon directly into your face. Can you say jump on the couch couch couch couch. Amy run away please. razoredge

Why on earth does a serious actress like Amy Adams need this project? This is a kiss of death for her career. Hope she is smart enough to pass on it. Maybe Cruise can reunite with Cameron Diaz.
I’m sad that cheesy, forgettable musical fluff like Rock of Ages is getting made into a movie with big stars attached, and yet a truly great musical like Les Miserables still has not been made into a movie. Les Miz is timelier than ever now, too, thanks to the recent revolutions in the Middle East. Come on, what’s the hold up??

Um, it was made into a movie in 1998 with Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Uma Thurman, and Claire Danes … and it sucked. Probably why they haven’t remade it.
It seems clear that you couldn’t possibly have seen the 1998 version, because it was in no way a musical. It had no connection to the musical whatsoever, except that they were both based on the same novel.

No,please,God! Amy Adams is a good actress but completely wrong to play Janis Joplin. That role needs someone with some grit, some gravitas, something sweet Amy does not have.
And don’t tell me, “but she’s an actress”. It ain’t gonna work.
This has got to be some of the worst casting decisions for this movie musical ever.
You sassy haters will all be proven wrong when this comes out. The nails and fangs are sure out for Cruise, though. Sheesh. I loved “Hairspray” and have complete trust Shankman will not disappoint. When I first learned Travolta was cast in that I thought WTH? Guess what? I was wrong. Sooo wrong.
