In what would be her first regular series gig, Oscar winner Anjelica Huston has been tapped to co-star opposite Debra Messing and Christian Borle in NBC’s drama pilot Smash, which follows a cross-section of characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway. Huston will play a shrewd, classy but cynical New York theater producer who is at home with the elite. Also co-starring in the pilot are Megan Hilty, Jack Davenport and Katharine McPhee. On TV, Huston recently recurred on the NBC/CBS drama Medium.

Smas seems to be a really good pilot.
primetime panic? so is angelica huston panicking?
I can`t root for this Glee rip off precisely because it`s feeding Glee fad. I freakin hate that crapfest so I`m hating on this too. Yeah, I`m totally aware how immature my attitude is but I freakin can`t wait for this to flop and get headlines Smash Is Bomb or something predictable as that.
Smash is NOTHING like Glee. Glee celebrates America with a DIVERSE cast – Asian, Black, Jewish, Gay etc.
Smash is just another TV Network show with a lily white cast.
Um, Smash is an ensemble show with a small handful of equally significant characters. One of these is a black theater director, and he’s one of very few interesting characters black or white in any of this season’s pilots.
If you’re going to complain about the lack of diversity on the Deadline comment boards, at least be intelligent about which shows you target…otherwise you come off like a mindless wind-up doll.
Hey Boohiss,
Don’t get so self-righteous and scolding over ONE black character in an ensemble. In the old days that was called “tokenism”; it wasn’t particularly admirable then and it certainly isn’t now.
Glee is a teen show about a school showchoir.
Smash is a show about the making of a Broadway show.
Two completely different concepts, apart from both having musical elements. Smash is, for me, the most anticipated pilot this year. The story sounds great, and everyone involved, from the cast to Michael Mayer directing and Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman doing the music, is excellent.
I’ll wait to form any opinions or criticisms until after I’ve seen the Smash production. Racial diversity never crossed my mind, maybe because I don’t care.
