AT&T announced the deal ahead of a major wireless conference in Orlando tomorrow.
The new entity would be the biggest in the U.S. with 130 million subscribers. The result is that America’s national mobile carrier choices will decrease by one to just three — if the AT&T purchase of Deutsche Telecom AG’s U.S. T-Mobile unit passes antitrust regulatory hurdles. Forget whether you’ll now get service in dead zones in Pacific Palisades. The real issue for Hollywood is that this is now one less place to sell its content. Big Telco is becoming exactly like Big Media by reducing competition: I think they deserve one another.
According to Deadline’s sibling site BGR.com: ”With all of the talk of Sprint and T-Mobile joining up, the AT&T news comes out of the blue — though strategically it makes more sense due to both carriers’ spectrum and network technology. It has been widely reported that Deutsche Telekom was looking to get rid of T-Mobile USA for various reasons. AT&T has also committed to delivering LTE to an additional 46 million people with the T-Mobile acquisition, promising to cover close to 95% of the U.S. population with LTE wireless services in the future. The deal is expected to close, pending regulatory approval, within the next 12 months.”

if AT&T buy t-mobile i’m cancelling my service. i refuse to give any of my hard earned money to such a corrupt, right wing fascist supporting corporation (check out their political donation history). i’d advise you all to do the same as your actual vote doesn’t count any more – only where you spend your shrinking share of the cash. we are governed by corporations now so you have to starve the bad ones and encourage the good ones.
There are no good ones. Verizon isn’t any better than AT&T.
try Credo – the way forward
I know they’re so tiny, but has everyone forgotten Sprint? That’s the telco that Credo Mobile works through.
i will do the same, if att buys out tmobile. i will go to verizon. att is nothing but a corrupt economical mogul destined to monopolize the telecommunications system. there service is first rate worthless. i advise people to do the same. they have may reports of dropped calls, and overage fees alot more higher than the national deficit.
OH NOS! I have T-mobile and I don’t want ATT. This is a moving towards a monopoly.
“Monopoly” < exactly!
There used to be laws in this country. Further, does anybody remember the phrase "too big to fail"? And didn't AT&T have that secret deal with the gov't to allow illegal wiretapping by the Bushies? Ummm, yeah. Anybody go to jail? Ummm, nope.
And AT&T is the absolute reason I left Cingular (at the time). Worst customer service since Nextel (and that's saying something).
NOOOOOO…. I tried desperately to get away from ATT and finally found excellent connections at T-Mobile. Now I’m afraid it will all turn to sh*ATT again.
I recall at one time AT&T was a monopoly- and didn’t that change in 1982 when the Gov’t stepped in and AT&T had to divest themselves of the Bell properties? Deja Vu all over again?
JZ
Putting my iPhone away and breaking out my telegraph… that’ll show em’!
This is great news! Now all my friends who have T-Mobile won’t be able to hear me either.
The American consumer gets screwed again.
What will apple do with all their cash now?
AT&T does not stand behind their product. They continue to run technology on an outdated infrastructure. They will ruin the good image TMobile has built for itself. I look foward to the sec and fcc hearings hopefully airing some of the empire’s (at&t) dirty laundry. I will start shopping for a new wireless company.
If you are that upset, then cancel your cellphone. You lived your life without it. Save the monthly fees and the overage charges.
Otherwise, quit bitching.
Great one more reason to hate big business if this goes through I am moving my service provider for my business to Sprint that will show them.
Who cares? Sprint (or at the very least, Verizon) is where it’s at.
I find it ironic that you can be on your ATT cell phone in front of their building and your phone WON’T GET RECEPTION. ATT SUCKS, I guess I will be telling T Mobile to stuff it here shortly. This happened to me when B of A bought out my bank, I hate these morons
Two of the worst companies now combine. AT&T sucked after they merged with Cingular and they’re sure to suck even worse now. I’ve had more problems since I switched to them from Verizon than any other company. At one point my freakin’ cell phone would not receive calls from certain landlines because they screwed up something when programming my number. They totally suck as a company.
And when I was with T-Mobile 8 or so years ago, they had the worst customer service, and put toll charges on my bill for no reason.
Verizon, I’m sure I’ll be coming back soon. I swear baby, the only reason I left was b/c my girlfriend was with AT&T and they sold me on the roll-over minutes. But we’ll both just switch to Verizon when our contracts are up. With Verizon for 6 years before AT&T and never had any problems. Their coverage/service is superior as well as their customer service.
God, AT&T is just going to go further down the drain now. Bigger is not better.
This explains the Iphone on T-Mobile. Happy I didn’t fall for that.
This will make the biggest, most expensive tin can and string phone company ever. These are the two worst cell phone companies ever. They should buy Boost too, so they have all the worst providers. It’s like a bum wedding. So basically you can get Sprint or Verizon if you want to make calls, stay connected and have service, or you can sign up with this Leviathan and just shout back and forth across canyons through a bullhorn to your friends, family and co-workers.
Excellent! More mobile to mobile calls means I won’t have to increase my minutes.
Hopefully the government will be doing something about this. This is ridiculous. Didn’t we go through this once before in the 80s? Why is it being allowed to happen again?
T-Mobile had the best rates but the coverage wasn’t that great. Been a Sprint customer for 14yrs and they’re pretty reliable. Expensive but reliable. What are you gonna do? Six on one hand and a half dozen on the other.
