EXCLUSIVE: The more, the merrier. Battlestar Galactica developer/ executive producer Ron Moore has tapped a third co-star from the hit Syfy series, Tricia Helfer, to join his new sci-fi project, NBC’s pilot 17th Precinct. The Sony TV-produced drama is set in the fictional town of Excelsior where magic and supernatural elements rule over science and revolves around the cops at the local 17th Precinct. Helfer will play Morgana, a necromancer, the magical equivalent of a coroner, who is an expert at manipulating the potions, tools, herbs and spells of her trade.
In the pilot, Helfer joins fellow Battlestar alumni James Callis and Jamie Bamber.

I said it on TV Line in the comments section.

Someone recommended Tahmoh Penikett in addition to this fine if not seen before cast. I said, “I’ll see your Tahmoh Penikett and raise you a Tricia Helfer.”
Hey, if you were wrong as often as I am you would celebrate being right, too.
“The series is set in the fictional town of
Eurekaum . . . Excelsior . . .Actually this show sounds a LOT like DRAGON PRECINCT the book series by Keith DeCandido.
I’ve read that the pilot is very good. Very creative.
I can confirm that it is. Very excited and hopeful to see what happens when they shoot it.
Of course there are many versions of this theme that already exsist. Ever see TO CATCH A DEADLY SPELL with Fred Ward (HBO Films 199?)?
Ron Moore will hopefully deliever a slick, esoteric detective program. And with this cast, the characters HAVE to be good.
Since when Ron came up with original idea? Hello…
Bamber, Callis AND Helfer?
The casting for this show is getting a little precious.
let me guess? She’ll be the police captain.
It says she’ll be a coroner.I think Eamonn Walker is playing the boss.
This is interesting.Using a necromancer as a coroner.Someone who raises the spirit or body of the dead. It’s sorta like Pushing Daisies, or the Resurrection Gauntlet from Torchwood.
*groan* Who approves these shows? Seriously. This sounds terrible.
Very awesome news. I’d love to see Mary McDonnell join the cast as well.
I hope NBC picks it up, they’ll certainly get a lot of positive buzz for it from the cast alone.
As much as I love all three actors, this is getting more than a little ridiculous (and may be more than a little distracting).
I think this is great news. The show sounds interesting and Ron Moore makes great shows. All we need now is Edward James Olmos (the ‘old man’) to come on board. I miss the old man.
I am very excited for this to come out.
i’m gonna say first cancellation of the season…
This series is just not NBC. See THE EVENT and about 100 shows before that…
I think you nailed it.
This is getting more exciting by the minute. The cast alone will guarantee buzz for this show. Granted, that does not translate into ratings, but NBC needs a show like that.
If this gets picked up for series – I’m calling it – the first cancellation of the season. Sci Fi is a losing battle.
Seriously, who brings a sci fi project to NBC? After the sad death spiral HEROES was left languishing in and the fact that THE CAPE has gotten pushed from the net to the web … I’m more interested to hear moore about Moore’s WILD WILD WEST reboot over at CBS.
It’s a shame that sci-fi/fantasy actors find it hard to break out of the ghetto. Helfer is a much better actress than she gets credit for.
Yes, Tricia Helfer absolutely is better than most would give her credit for. She created multiple clearly delineated personas on Galactica, and really seemed to come into her own with the prisoner abuse story line in season 2. But then again, a lot of the actors from that show are better than anyone gives them credit for.
Then again, some people may perceive what you refer to as a “ghetto” as a haven-certainly a lot of the writing and performances on Galactica were on a higher level than almost any “mainstream” drama I can think of. What do the actors on some of the highest rated shows get to do, recite iterations of the the same procedural lingo over and over again?
I love Batllestar, but even I think this is a bit much. Then again, all three are superb actors so why wouldn’t Moore cast them?
I for one think this show sounds very interesting. Police procedurals are hot at the moment, as are fantasy shows. To combine the two might not be original or inspired, but I trust Moore to at least make it interesting. This will either flop, or be a huge hit.
I just don’t get the negative comments. All three of these actors from Battlestar Galactica are very talented. I will watch this pilot because they’re in it as much as for the fascinating premise.
