EXCLUSIVE: Benicio Del Toro is signing on to play a deadly drug cartel enforcer in Savages, joining Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch in the drama that Oliver Stone is directing, based on the Don Winslow bestseller. The project is moving toward a potential deal with Universal, though two other studios remain in discussions. Johnson and Kitsch are set to play Ben and Chon, two best friends who are growers of primo pot in Laguna. They share an unusual relationship with a trippy girl named O. Not only are they all best friends, she has a relationship with each. Their quiet lucrative life is interrupted by a visit from the drug enforcer Lado (Del Toro) who tells them they will have to work for his boss, a Mexican cartel matriarch. When they refuse, O is kidnapped, and they are forced to come up with a fortune in ransom. They plot to do it by hijacking the cartel’s drug supply, right under the nose of Lado, who is highly suspicious.
Stone is honing the script with Shane Salerno and Winslow. Jennifer Lawrence was going to play O, until she was set for the lead in the Gary Ross-directed The Hunger Games at Lionsgate. I’m told that Stone has cast a wide net for O, looking at established names and unknowns. Salma Hayek is also in the mix for the role of the Mexican drug cartel matriarch, but she isn’t set. Del Toro just made his directorial debut on a segment of the omnibus film 7 Days in Havana. He’s managed by Rick Yorn.

This project sounds cool as hell! I have not read the script but I’ve heard in agency circles that it is every bit as wild of a ride as the novel which I read over Christmas after the New York Times named it as one of the ten best books of the year.
The book is a fast, great read. I can’t wait to see the film.
I love Benicio Del Toro as an actor, I really do, I think he’s awesome, but with all due respect, why can’t they find a talented Mexican actor to play this role….? … Del Toro’s accent when he speaks spanish shows, very obviously, that he is not from Mexico, you can hear in his role in Traffic too.
Just saying, I would figure someone as smart and talented as Oliver Stone would see this – and yes the argument can be made that actors in roles that are not their ethnic background is very possible but if they can actually play to that and get away with it than more power to them.. ex: Al Pacino in Scarface – I have 15 Cuban friends that think Al Pacino is an adopted-cuban because of that role. but obviously he acted his ass of and pulled it off.
“Del Toro’s accent when he speaks spanish shows, very obviously, that he is not from Mexico”
you sir/madam do not know what your talking about. Del Toro’s accent in traffic is sublime. Go hang out in TJ and you can tell how not only his inflection in certain words but mannerisms are spot on.
As a Mexican would I like to see more Mexican’s in hollywood sure, but I cant tell you with a straight face that Del Toro has no business playing a Mexican. He pulled it off once and will do so again.
No it is not. I was born there, grew up there still go back there to visit. It’s not right. I love him as an actor I think he is great but he didn’t pull that off. period. In that movie he looks like he wants to open his mouth more yet he knows he probably can’t because his natural accent is going to slip out. I have family friends from TJ , have worked with people in TJ, have family all along the northern border, I know what it sounds like, thats not it.
Do I think he can pull it off.. yeah I do, he’s very talented but he needs more practice at it.
I feel strongly that they can find a better FIT for this role.. have you seen the movies El Infierno? and La ley de Herodes? ..two solid films with a lot of solid acting in it… if you haven’t watch them… Mexican actors that I know can play this part.. furthermore, it wouldn’t matter if he was an unknown, I believe audiences would be more intrigued…. look at Inglorious Bastards and Christoph Waltz.. no one knew he was.. perfect fit.. blew everyone’s mind with the performance.
I predict Blake Lively will play the “O” role. THE TOWN proved she can act, and this is a way for her to follow up GREEN LANTERN with something quirkier. She can let loose with the trippy, sexy O character.
Lively was awful in the town
she was horrible! I laughed so much at all of her scenes…I really liked The Town but she definitely detracted from the movie…she just seemed like she was trying way too hard
No, she wasn’t awful in THE TOWN. She got good reviews. In fact, I don’t think she got a single bad review from any critic. I reread SAVAGES last night and especially in the last scene, I could see Blake Lively in that role.
Roland sees: ( Y )
Roland thinks: gooooooooood.
For O – Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde, or January Jones.
january jones is over 10 years too old for the role and completely wrong for it anyway. olivia has the right feel, but again, too old (she is supposed to be 19). and i will be disappointed if they choose blake – she is the vanilla choice.
olivia thirlby, evan rachel wood, or Agnes Bruckner is much more on target.
