The young male Role To Die For at the moment is the lead in The Bourne Legacy, the Bourne Identity spinoff film that will be directed for Universal by Tony Gilroy. The field is narrowing, and I’m told that the following are set so far to test: Joel Edgerton (The Thing), Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) and Luke Evans (The Amateur American).

There could be another name or two (Logan Marshall-Green comes up as speculation), but that’s who’ll test first week of April. Now the choice could always come from an actor who doesn’t test. Among the established names in the mix has been Shia LaBeouf (will not test, per insiders) and Battleship‘s Taylor Kitsch (has met with Gilroy and is a possibility). I don’t think the studio feels this needs a big star. It’s hard to find a better branded movie, and while it’s not Matt Damon starring, Gilroy’s writing work has provided the spine for the original series. That gives this some franchise cred.

why not just create a new spy franchise that won’t retreat the same material and won’t draw comparisons to damon?
stupid…
I agree, Hollywood is greedy and lazy. With all the whinning here about Damon not being it, I would start a whole other series.
“Some” franchise cred is right.
Gilroy is on record hating on the first three movies. If the studio had a truly great script, Matt Damon and Greengrass would be making it.
My choice would be Dominic Cooper. He is sensational in The Devils Double and will see his career go into the stratosphere when it is released.
Matthew Macfadyen!!!
would everyone please stop referring to garrett hedlund in relation to well, anything.
He can’t act and he has all the charisma of a narcisstic block of wood.
Tron made almost $400 mil and is devoid of any Razzie nominations. He’s set as the lead in the highly anticipated. Walter Salles adaption of the Kerouac book On the Road for later this year. We will know soon enough if he can really act but it’s not a surprise he’s rumored for everything.
Tron made under 400mil and it cost 290million $$$$$. That’s HARDLY a box office success; actually, it’s a megaflop! Ad btw, just because on the road is a book that some american scholars like, it doesn’t make the film HIGHLY anticipated; Sales did direct the wonderful Motorcycle Diaries, but he also directed the shittious Dark Water; just sayin!
“some american scholars”? Dude, the book defined the Beat generation and is assigned in most high school. Oh right, you didn’t finish high school.
Apparently you didn’t finish high school, or you’d know that nobody assigns this for reading. Are you joking? Doesn’t mean the book shouldn’t have been made into a movie, but that is a ridiculous argument. A dozen people might be highly anticipating this movie. And that is generous.
And it’s “shiteous”, by the way.
Domestic: $171,777,398
+ Foreign: $225,500,000
Total: 397,277,398
Production Budget: 170million (plus publicity)
This does not include toy, video game and DVD sales and rentals. Sequel already being made. I have not seen the movie so I have no opinion on the quality of the film, but I would say your argument holds no water. Flop? I think not.
@Stella – My high school actually did assign On The Road for “advanced placement” English class. But, you being in remedial English, would know nothing about that. And I wasn’t arguing that the movie should or should not have been made into a movie. I was merely responding to the poster’s (erroneous) claim that only a handful of scholars read this book. As for it being one of the most anticipated movies of 2011 (and yes, it is), you just need to merely google “On The Road Most Anticipated Movie of 2011″ and you’ll get plenty of results.
Hollywood needs to stop trying to make Garrett Hedlund happen. He’s a good looking kid but he’s already had enough of a body of work to prove that middle America doesn’t care. Move along.
couldn’t agree more!
I don’t know, Hedlund could be a dark horse. If you ever saw Death Sentence, you wouldn’t even recognize the guy he looked so badass. And although he was bland in Tron, he’s displayed acting chops in Friday Night Lights and Country Strong. He’s got the height and he can play dark.
Out of the 4, Joel Edgerton seems to fit the bill, physically at least.
Shia Lebouf? Isn’t he like 5′ 6”?
Well, then start psyching up to see Hedlund at the Oscars next year.
The Salles/Coppola “On The Road” collaboration will blow everyone out of the water. And for those of you dissing Oscar winner Walter Salles in this post, you do show your ignorance. Salles is an expert on road films theory/history, his best films have always centered on road movies. OTR will be his fourth one and I can assure you -as he’s been involved with the project for six years- OTR will not a “Dark Water” type film. It’s Oscar bound.
None of these names are exciting me.
P.S. – Kitsch now thinks he is too big to test?! The dude hasn’t done squat yet. Ballooning head reminds me of Pettyfer.
Where does it say that he declined a test and thinks hes too big to do one? You’re a moron.
I agree, you’re a moron with reading comprehension issues!
Garrett Hedlund or Dominic Cooper.
hasnt done a squat yet? how about john carter of mars, battleship, big bang club,5 seasons of fnl and he has just been cast as the lead in oliver stones savages.
he is great actor and he doesnt need to do auditions any more, not to mention he has great relationship with universal…
Movies that haven’t opened and a show no one watched. And yet he thinks he’s too big to test? If he is very, very lucky those movies won’t bomb. Then he can tell everybody he is too big to test.
The new film should be based on Julian Assange.
Good call Joe. How about Ryan Gosling for Bourne? He would be great.
None of the above. Chandler Bing?… I mean Shia LaBeouf. That’s laughable. Hey at least it’s not all Sam Worthington, now it’s Garrett Hedlund. This too will pass.
Anyone see Animal Kingdom? In 20 minutes of screen time, Joel Edgerton proved to be a movie star. He would be great in this.
Joel Edgerton ruins every film he’s in. Alwasy has done and always will do. His squinty, nasally presence is horrid. Although, while you’re on the subject of Animal Kingdom, how about casting Ben Mendelsohn in the bad guy role for Bourne?
The clear choice is RYAN GOSLING!
hmmmm…that featured extra from Clash would be good. What about my brother?
Stupid. Instead of going younger they should go older. I’d rather see Kevin Costner do this spinoff. Will the secret CIA division be named Re-Treadstone? It should be since this really is a re-tread. Since it’s not about Jason Bourne why do they think they need a young guy? I’d rather see Charlie Sheen do it than any of these guys. Costner would be great in an action movie he was fantastic in No Way Out and hasn’t done anything like that since. Have him be an out of shape middle age bureaucrat who gets caught up in the espionage. It worked with Liam in Taken it’d work just as well here.
LOL. Costner is a trainwreck that people haven’t cared about for over twenty years. Find me the 19 year old who gives a crap about him or even knows his name. Find me the 50 year old who hasn’t been alienated by his acting stylings permanently set on “smug”. LOL.
So Costner is perfect for Superman as Pa Kent but he’d be terrible in a Bourne spinoff? Makes no sense. You’re a moron. The appeal of Costner in this would be the same as 3 Days of the Condor. A guy who’s not an action hero being thrust into an action scenario. Or he’s 20 years retired from being the action hero and he’s now stuck behind a desk at CIA headquarters. None of these 20-something guys are bankable at the moment only the Bourne name is what’s sellable on this. Without Damon the way to go is to cast an older actor who used to be big or did you think Neeson in Taken was terrible?
Such silliness. Pa Kent is a five minute role. No audience has been willing to sit through a whole movie with Costner for the last decade. If people had wanted to see him, they would have made one of his many comeback attempts a hit, instead of shunning him. I know you are probably paid by him to humiliate yourself with these suggestions, so nobody is judging you.
If this is a “spinoff” and not a “prequel”, why do all of the actors in contention appear to be Caucasian? Is there a reason a Black, Latino, Asian, etc. can’t be a leading man, kick-ass hero in the Bourne universe? Narrow-minded and pathetic….
Yes. I can just see Kostner doing some Parkour chase scene where he’s leaping like a jaguar over walls and scaffoldings. Plus, we’d be able to see him pull off some Kali Escrima fight sequences where he neutralizes the bad guy with a phone book and a fountain pen. Good call.
Dominic Cooper is the only one that’s appealing to me but i’m lukewarm on him for this part. Ryan Gosling would be an interesting choice but clearly he’s too pricey if these are the names who are testing.
The perfect Man is MATTHEW MACFADYEN!!
Luke Evans is the only choice. I think he is much suitable for the role.
Greengrass wasn’t the star of this franchise, it was Dan Bradley who directed 2nd unit and created all the action. Rumor has it he’s coming back for this one so you know the action will be good. Hell, maybe even better w/o Greengrass.
Excellent point and very true. Bradley should be allowed to direct this movie he’s earned it. He did Red Dawn but don’t hold that against him he’s a top notch guy and he really did create some amazing action scenes for Greengrass to take credit for.
This film
Will not get made. Script needs work universal has had a bad run of late and this is all just talk. Watch. What happens. The next Bourne film will be with Matt Damon unless by some miracle Shia wants to do this.
How about Ben Mckenzie? He is excellent in both the dramatic scenes and the action scenes on Southland. He even resembles Matt Damon a bit.
Southland has been renewed but I don’t think it will start filming till later this year.
Isn’t Mckenzie like 5’5? He’s too short to be a lead in an action movie.
Ditto for Shia.
Alex Skarsgard. Make it happen, Hollywood.
Totally agree with the Gosling shout. Great actor, and would suit the role
