EXCLUSIVE: In his first regular series gig, Tropic Thunder co-star Brandon T. Jackson has been tapped as the male lead opposite Minnie Driver in CBS’ buddy P.I. pilot Hail Mary. Penned by Jeff Wadlow, the project centers on Mary Beth Baker (Driver), a suburban single mom in Atlanta who, after her teen son gets killed, teams up with her son’s best friend KZ (Jackson), a fast-talking con artist from the streets, to solve her son’s murder and other crimes. Jackson, repped by CAA and ML Management, most recently appeared in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and guest starred on Fox’s Raising Hope.

I stopped reading as soon as I got to “fast-talking con artist from the streets.” Jeez. Stereotype much, CBS? Would it have really stretched the writers that much to create an African American character who WAS’T a fast-talking con artist from the streets, or a fast-talking ex-con from the streets, or a down-and-out fatherless child from the streets, or a loud, sassy, fast-talking, former prostitute from the streets? Thanks, in advance, CBS. Here’s an hour I won’t be watching.
Oh – and by the way, Brandon T. Jackson – rent Hollywood Shuffle one day…
So true. I have the same issue with how the African American characters are written in Harry’s Law, too.
You mean “Thank you White Lady?”
The new show sounds like a hail Mary play. The creator just pitched his passion project. The studio head looks at him blankly and asks, “You got anything else?” The writer does not. He accidently mutters, “Hail Mary play.” The studio head hears that and is interested, tell me more…
“Ahh…It’s a woman named Mary…who’s a weatherman…no a private detective…”
It feels very 80′s. From the fast talking black guy to the title with the main character’s name in it as a common phrase.
Will the black character be a lady’s man or a hen pecked husband?
LOL you beat me to it. “a fast-talking con artist from the streets” I almost died laughing so hard. I too stopped reading after that sentence. How apropos indeed with the Hollywood Shuffle comment. I wonder how many Deadline.com readers actually saw that Robert Townsend film?
EXACTLY^^^^
I cringed as I read that particular line. If he’s the son’s best friend why can’t he simply be a criminal justice major from his college?
Brandon has been handed nothing but blaxploitation roles but unfortunately that’s all Hollywood offers. Even Denzel had to play a crooked cop to win an Oscar while Terence Howard played a pimp turned ‘rapper’ to get nominated.
It sounds like a lame broadcast network ripoff of “Terriers.” God, I miss that show.
I hope Hail Mary is a huge hit. The role could be worse. I am sure Brandon will play the role with dignity and we all will be proud. Plenty of white actors have played fast talking cons without any complaints. Lighten up and be happy the brother is working.
i cant wait to see this show and how it will turn out
I happen to be a huge fan of Brandon T. Jackson. I love him and I believe he is going to do amazing.
