Breakout Kings completed its Cinderella story with a record debut on A&E. The show, which was rescued by A&E after Fox passed on the pilot in May, drew the highest demo numbers for an A&E drama series, 1.5 million adults 18-49 and 1.6 million adults 25-54. That was up 25% in adults 18-49 and 14% in adults 25-54 from the previous network record holder, the July 2010 debut of the network’s The Glades. In 18-49, Breakout Kings outperformed recent cable scripted premieres, including that of USA’s Fairly Legal. In total viewers, Breakout Kings drew 2.8 million, short of The Glades‘ record of 3.6 million. “Breakout Kings is a smart, action-packed drama with great storytelling and authentic well-drawn characters,” said Bob DeBitetto, President and general manager of A&E and BIO. “Clearly the series has struck a chord with the younger viewers.”
Also last night, the Season 5 debut of Lifetime’s Army Wives averaged 4.2 million viewers, up 27% from the fourth season debut last April. In adults 25-54, the Army Wives premiere (2 million) was up 13%, in women 18-49 (1.4 million) up 19%.
Immediately following Army Wives at 10 PM, Lifetime’s new unscripted series Coming Home had the network’s biggest unscripted series launch aside from the acquired Project Runway. Featuring U.S. armed forces service members’ surprise family reunions, Coming Home averaged 2.7 million viewers, 1.4 million of them in the 18-49 demographic.

My only problem with Breakout Kings is that I can’t watch Jimmi Simpson without thinking of him as David Letterman’s indelibly snarky “Lyle the Intern”.
Jimmi Simpson is absolutely the best thing about that show. He is GENIUS!
Liked Breakout Kings…I’ll stick around for a few more episodes. When is T-Bag coming back?
Jimmi Simpson was amazing! He is the reason I’ll be tuning back in.
Wow! Bert Salke is 1 for 1! Score one for the good guys! Can’t wait until next week’s episode!
BERT SALKE had zero to do with this show. Zero. And I agree with GOOD GUYS, Bert would do a lot better in his career if he treated people with kindness and respect
I thought it was fun. It has the potential to be a fun weekly caper show like Leverage. A little surprised that A&E aired the Pilot that was shot for FOX with Nicole Steinwedell and didn’t do any re-shoots. Should be interesting to see how they explain Philly’s departure from the show next week.
Are you serious? Bert salke is one of the most disliked guys in town. He’s abusive to his executives and has a huge ego. Score one for the bad guys. Not a first in Hollywood.
Bert Salke is a meany, I imagine his wife already at FOX helped him score that gig. Let’s see how long he lasts once she moves on?
Serinda Swan should be a mega movie star. She has the acting chops.
Good for the cast & crew of Army Wives; bad for the brain dead execs and/or design firm that OK’d the horrendous outdoor campaign for the show…anything that encourages/justifies such shoddy work can’t be good.
Wait – it’s a “big debut,” and yet had one million viewers fewer than The Glades, which was promoted so much less? This ain’t exactly impressive.
Summer premiere vs. March premiere
Dangodung, I really dug Steinwedell in the pilot. Can’t wait to see T-Bag’s return. Too bad Knepper’s only guesting.
I LOVE the show “Breakout Kings”. What’s up with it? Why has there been no mention of it if it wasn’t cancelled? And Jimmy MADE the show better. Like SO MANY good shows, the network will not give it a chance, its life will be cut short.
I love Breakout Kings! I loved it even more when Laz Alonso was on the show! What happened, why isn’t he on the show any longer??
