FilmNation Entertainment is building the action-thriller The Amateur American around British actor Luke Evans. The pic, written and to be directed by Ross Katz, is scheduled to shoot in September. It’s another case of a financier speculating on an actor it thinks will turn into one of the next young stars, and also another in a growing trend of offshore thesps tapped to play Americans. That has become a regular occurrence in superhero movies from Batman to Superman and Spider-Man, among others. What has happened to the American action hero gene pool?
FilmNation was sold on Evans after watching his work in its just-wrapped The Raven, in which he starred alongside John Cusack. Evans also played Apollo in Clash of the Titans, plays Zeus in the upcoming Immortals, and Aramis in The Three Musketeers.Writer-director Katz produced such indie films as In The Bedroom and Lost In Translation, and made his directorial debut on the Kevin Bacon-starrer Taking Chance for HBO.
The action-thriller is about a young American living in Paris who accepts a job working for a shadowy employer and soon finds himself framed for murder and caught up in a web of deceit. The pic will be produced by FilmNation Entertainment’s Aaron Ryder and Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman. FilmNation will begin selling foreign territories. No domestic deal has yet been set.
FilmNation just wrapped House at the End of the Street with Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence and Likely Story is getting underway on the Stephen Frears-directed Lay the Favorite with Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

FYI Mike: Andrew Garfield was born in the USA.
I’ve been saying this since I saw his IMMORTALS audition, this guy is the real deal. I think he has the chops to be the next Russell Crowe. He’s that good. He just needs the right parts. Upwards and onwards Luke.
What has happened to the American hero gene pool? It is no long politically-correct for an American male to be an alpha male leader.
Feminism and the Hollywood gay agenda have conspired to make American men Glee-loving twinks or hair-gel metrosexuals, the desired sidekick/shopping buddy/gossip buddy (not actual MATE) to today’s modern American woman.
Guys like Ryan Reynolds (Canadian) have to be funny to be appealing, not just look good and kick ass on-screen. Hence we import our hero-types and “bad boys” from Australia, Ireland or Scotland, or England where apparently it’s still OK for boys to be boys.
But wait, even macho, Scottish 300 hero Gerard Butler has become a chubby purse-holder in The Ugly Truth and that Jennifer Aniston garbage he was in.
We have to reach back 20 years for legit American action heroes in movies (well, outside of Matt Damon’s Bourne and the Green Zone movies). The success of The Expendables proves that America still wants to see its homegrown action stars on screen despite their current political incorrectness.
Meanwhile, Salt, which was supposed to have been the female Bourne, craps out at the box office?
Hmmm.
uhhhhh, salt made more than the expendables at the box office, both in the u.s. and worldwide. and last time i checked, jason statham, jet li, and dolph lundgren aren’t exactly “homegrown” action stars.
But Sly (only the writer/director and driving force), Willis, Crews, Couture and Rourke were and are. Focus.
So Salt made money, where’s the sequel? There will be an Expendables 2.
The overwhelming thrust of my post is still valid.
Nitpicking and parsing to make a point, only to have it fall flat, so 21st century.
on the one hand you have a point. but you lost me at the whole gerard butler thing –he’s totally unattractive and not a good actor.
and Salt made tons of money.
as an american, it is disturbing to me that hemingway is not being played by an american i’m a bit less disturbed by batman, superman and spiderman considering that those dudes never actually existed.
Dear men, men, men:
The part of your argument that holds water is that Aussies, NZ’s, and Brit actors have been more successful breaking through in virile movie roles in the past 10 or 15 years than have Americans actors of the same period.
The rest is malarkey – Hollywood couldn’t be trying harder with its tentpoles for worldwide nostalgic entertainment with traditional male macho characters at the center. How is that the “Hollywood gay agenda” and how would the ‘HGA” push out American actors from these roles and why would it? Wouldm’t the HGA be pushing GAY Americans for these roles? Or are the HGA and the PC police drumming great macho actors out of town or something? Moreover if Hollywood has a gay agenda it’s not working, as like 3 gay films have broken through in like 20 years.
I suspect it’s the usual reason why brits and aussie actors succeed vs. Americans- they’re better trained.
P.S. Your handle is very odd and fey considering your pronouncements about the gay agenda.
