EXCLUSIVE: CAA has landed up-and-coming actress Emma Roberts. Deadline told you Wednesday that her longtime manager David Sweeney had arranged a series of meetings for Roberts, looking for an agency to transition the teen star to adult parts. CAA just made the signing. It comes at a time when Roberts stars in Scream 4, which opens April 15. She most recently starred in Homework, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was bought for acquisition by Fox Searchlight. Before that she starred in It’s Kind Of A Funny Story, which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.

What did she star in before that?
color me grey for ‘not surprised’
What’s that line from Heathers, ‘Quit trying to make this girl happen, it’s not working.’ Yawn. CAA, what’s their motto again? ‘We work to give the world Jen Aniston 24/7, and ignore the real talent still dumb enough to be associated with us.’ This woman is in that same vein, expect people with actual charisma and talent to be ignored, so that CAA can make Julia Robert’s niece happen. Clue: if you’re Julia Robert’s niece, and have been tailing her around in the business since you were born, and you need a behemoth like CAA to make people care? This business is not for you. I had to roll my eyes when I read where she said, ‘I was all set to enroll in Sarah Lawrence College, but I told myself I wouldn’t if something better came along, and what do you know, Scream happened.’
Hopefully CAA can do as much for Emma’s career as they did for Julia’s! Ocean’s 12, Fireflies in the Garden, Duplicity, Valentine’s Day, Eat Pray Love… All classics!! The Larry Crowne trailer looks amazing! Way to go team!!
Too funny
Did you forgot to mention that it was David Sweeney HIMSELF who placed the info earlier this week that Emma was taking meetings? It was his way to ensure he didn’t get pushed out of her new team. Dude is shaking in his boots that he’ll be axed out now that powerhouse CAA is in charge. Good for Emma – she needs a stronger team behind her!
Why does a 21 yr old niece of Julia Roberts, who’s been in the public eye and had a Disney tv show and then landed parts in movies (thanks to her Aunt) — all equally uninspiring and snooze worthy “need a stronger team behind her?” So she can have a corporation like CAA trying to convince people she’s talented and interesting? Doesn’t the fact that she’s had Aunt Julia, and Disney and a myriad of ‘connections,’ all touch her career and give her a boost, to NO avail, signify that just maybe nepotism doesn’t need to be rewarded by additional CAA bullsh*t hype?
Who landed her? Seems like crucial info to include in this story
Don’t worry David, Kevin Huvane is already speaking to other managers and will have you phased out soon. Emma, have fun getting the scripts for whatever Jennifer Lawrence turns down.
BAHAHAHA! Put down the crackpipe!! Emma Roberts is lucky to get the scripts Vanessa Hudgens turns down, let alone Jennifer Lawrence.
Predictable. But I am sure CAA will do right by her. At the end of the day, actors do the movies they want to do. The agent just fields the offer and tries to get them the best deal. The real question here is: how long will it be until she fires Sweeney?
Once young Emma experiences what a real agency can do, I am sure she will pull a Bradley Cooper and fire her manager.
Just field offers? Very few people in this industry have a true incoming call business, and the ones who do should have reps developing for them and chasing outside the box, interesting material.
Her manager has done more for her than most “real agences” could have u half wit. I’ve dealt with him on projects, he’s an aggressive businessman and genuinely nice person. With Sweeney and Huvane + Co she’ll be unstoppable.
Emma is a class act
Hopefully they will not blow it like they did with Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan.
Emmy Rossum, Evan Rachel Wood, Miley Cyrus…
I’ll give you Amanda Bynes, but Lindsay Lohan blew herself.
Lindsay Lohan is STILL blowing herself. Nobody else will.
Just one small problem – she has ABSOLUTELY N0 ACTING TALENT/TRAINING/OR ABILITY. Just the name and the resemblance to her famous Aunt. Good Luck to her new reps!
Wow “lisa” that sure is a lot of hate you have set aside, for someone you don’t know. You remind me of that “dan”,from the “dan vs.” cartoon.
Having her own tv show for several seasons and over a dozen movies is not training. Get real. She’d be a REAL actress to you if she was doing Shakespeare in the Park or one act plays in the West End. Or, wait. She’d be a REAL actress if she spend a hundred thousand dollars on some conservatory and now is a waitress at Birds in Hollywood. Then she’d be REAL! Right?
Here’s the problem, despite all that you have just said, I didn’t know that girl had a tv show, or acted in movies, I thought she was just a relative of the Roberts clan. That means she probably is not too talented, and has no charisma. Between the Roberts family and Disney if she can’t make herself happen, CAA surely can’t. They’ll be able to land her in tabloids, celebrity magazine shows and get her ‘seen,’ via strategic photo-ops, and fauxmances (i.e., the Aniston career path). What I loathe about these huge corporate monopolies and their attempts to MAKE careers, is that it comes at the expense of those who don’t have famous aunts and disney shows. For instance, if Emma had signed with CAA a year ago, she may have been cast in Winter’s Bone and True Grit. Great for Emma and CAA, disasterous for everyone else concerned.
I disgaree with you on one point – she looks NOTHING like Julia Roberts IMO.
what does an agent do that a manager doesn’t? how’s the division of labor? can someone shed a light on this? i believe angelina jolie doesn’t have an agent and is solely represented by a manager.
A manager sits around and waits for the agent to do all the work. Then decides to back the agent on a project or not. – from the agent’s point of view
An agent just cares about booking business and bringing home the bacon, while a manager is there to hand hold and guide the overall career. – from a manager’s point of view
The key to this business is to surround yourself with a good team. Many actors are too stupid to pick good scripts, which is why many Oscar winners luck into a well written role, then their career tanks afterwards because they have such bad taste and their reps just want to exploit them and get as much money out of them as possible while the buyers are still buying.
There are so few Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s out there that “get” the bigger picture.
re: “Many actors are too stupid to pick good scripts…”
I feel sorry for your clients, that they are relying on you for anything.
Is it me or does Roberts look a lot like Ivanka Trump?
She went to a big agency because she wants to “be the next Natalie Portman,” according to the direct quote given by David Sweeney. So CAA is going to be able to catapult her ahead of Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone, et al? Because from my vantage point on my couch, she has to knock down some pretty formidable talent, all with a significant leg up on her, to be the next Natalie Portman.
Emma Roberts might be great, but thus far she’s been completely forgettable.
Feeling nostalgic for the time when our esteem for someone was based on their talent, not their agent.
She can’t act. Period. Aunt Julia Roberts has opened all doors for her.
Emma Roberts is young, and has done very well so far. Although, her aunt’s name may help, I believe she hsa proven herself and has grown as an actor, and is now standing on her own. To me, she is likable on screen.
She’s standing on her own eh? A well connected former Disney tv personality whose Aunt, Julia Roberts got her the gig, and now with CAA ready to bulldoze her through the front of the line? That’s ‘standing on one’s own,’ to you? The best tale of the tape is her time at Disney – most everyone who has/had a show, has been able to make a huge name for themselves and gain a sizeable fanbase of some type…she came out of that with most people in her age demo STILL not knowing who she was.
Who Cares!
