It’s like Deal or No Deal with envelopes instead of briefcases: CBS has ordered game show pilot Secret Fortune, which will be executive produced by American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance guru Nigel Lythgoe.
Based on a Wild River Prods. format, Secret Fortune will have contestants choosing from 24 sealed envelopes, each of them containing a check for amounts that varies widely from a buck to a fortune. Eventually, 23 of the envelopes will be destroyed, with the contestant left with the check in the remaining one. Lythgoe is exec producing with Wild Rover’s Phil Morrow.

So just as the article states, it’s Deal Or No Deal but with envelopes. How can that blatant ripoff even be legal? Forget the fact that it sounds like a terrible show– it’s already been done with Howie Mandel as host! I’ve got an idea, a show called Half Minute To Win It. Players get 30 seconds to complete seemingly easy challenges. I’m waiting for my offer…
This show runs on BBC 1 in the UK at the moment. I thought it sounded like a DOND rip off as well. But in practice it is different.
You choose four numbered envelopes and the computer knows the sums attached and allocates them in order. You get asked questions to rank something and try to choose the highest/lowest which will link to the highest sum in the four envelopes. By the end you have four left and if you have used skill will have high amounts only for the final question. In practice the rankings are so close it involves guesswork as much as skill. But the gane has much more judgement than Deal or No Deal. And if you win nothing or a large sum is more to do with how well you play than pure chance.
