CBS has renewed its two Sunday reality series, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss, for next season.
The Amazing Race, hosted by Phil Keoghan, is being picked up for a 19th cycle next fall. The recent fall edition of the 7-time Emmy-winning reality series delivered nearly 12 million viewers, matching the prior year’s performance, and was up 3% in adults 18-49. Jerry Bruckheimer, Bertram van Munster, Jonathan Littman, Elise Doganieri and Mark Vertullo are the executive producers.
Undercover Boss, which follows high level corporate executives as they slip anonymously into the rank and file of their own companies, is being renewed for a third season. The series premiered last February following the Super Bowl and went on to become the top-rated new series last season. The show has slipped in the ratings in its current second season but has still averaged a respectable 12.3 million viewers and a 3.4/09 in adults 18-49. Stephen Lambert, Eli Holzman and Chris Carlson are executive producing.TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Not surprised by this announcement. All the reality shows seem to be getting an early pickup. I suppose that shows the true state of broadcast television. I remember living overseas and most of their television was reality and game shows. But I figured that was because they couldn’t afford the television that we are used to here. I guess our country is finally taking the cheap and easy way to programing now. Cable will be the only place left for scripted fare at some point.
Glad to see AR renewed. I’m not a fan of UB, however. I’d love to know how, if the show isn’t a set up, the boss always finds people with a sob story. Never, “Oh just doing my job and grabbing a paycheck.” But for those who do like it, I’m glad it was renewed.
I find it more interesting that none of the workers featured ever question why there is a camera crew in their workplace, following one guy. By now everyone has to know it’s UNDERCOVER BOSS. Oh right, but this isn’t really a reality show…
Usually it’s explained but not on-camera: they’re participating in a reality show in which two prospective candidates for jobs with the company are evaluated by the people they’re working with. Usually the workers even talk about that part of the “gimmick” while they’re waiting for what they don’t know is the “Big Reveal.” I’m not crazy about the show, but they do make an effort to explain it to the workers.
They are recording back to back seasons of Survivors.
Why only 19 and not 20? It’s crazy how CBS always gives Survivor two season renewals, but TAR only one at a time.
At least TAR is consistently imaginative, with new locales, teams and tasks each time. UB is a repetitive pageant; every ep follows a predictable, plottable arc.
UNDERCOVER BOSS is one of the most disgusting shows I have ever watched. In this day and age when corporations are gaining in profits on the backs of the hard working people that work for them (when they have also cut their benefits as well as their pay) – we should boycott these kinds of shows. How anyone can watch that show is beyond me… Same with SECRET MILLIONAIRE. Sorry, I’m not buying it. NOT a fan.
everybody knows Undercover Boss is scripted. Please don’t call it a reality show.
What we do know is that these shows are what people want to see. Spending money on “non cheap” sitcoms/ drama etc that don’t attract viewers is just bad business.
