NBC and Lorne Michaels have won the Christina Applegate sweepstakes. The actress, who had been inundated by offers this pilot season, has closed a deal to topline NBC’s untitled Emily Spivey comedy pilot, lifting the contingency on the project. The comedy, from writer Spivey and Saturday Night Live chief Michaels, is an irreverent look at parenthood through the POV of an acerbic working mother (Applegate) -– who never thought she’d be a mom -– along with her stay-at-home husband and opinionated parents. In addition to starring, Applegate will serve with producer along with her manager Eric Kranzler. The CAA-repped actress, who recently gave birth to her first child, was the most sought-after actress this pilot season with about a dozen offers.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

i will watch it just for her!
Yeah Emily! One of the coolest people out there! Congrats!
She’s a terrific actress, hope it gets picked up.
Why did she choose this over so many other much better shows like Good Christian Bitches?
Great actress. Lousy taste. She still thinks Samantha Who was a good show.
NBC needs a really great Family comedy. It would do better in the ratings than the comedies they have on now.
This is a terrible script and Applegate will be wasted. Unless there’s been a significant rewrite and the script is actually funny (what I read was NOT a comedy) not even Christina can get this on the air. Hopefully she’ll choose better next pilot season because we deserve her on TV.
Laura- I am interested in finding out how you read the script. I am looking for a female comedian to help write a screenplay and don’t know where to begin. Do you know how it all works?
Love her!
Is it just me or is everyone just sick and tired of these sitcoms based on “the trials and tribulations” of working women with children. Does anyone really care any more? It’s so old news. Ok, we get it. It’s tough balancing act being a working mother with a husband. WE KNOW ALREADY!!!! Is this some sort of reflection on the increasing number of female screenwriters? If it is, women who aspire to be part of the mainstream better widen their topic choices. Please, find something else. Upper middle class white working women with children aren’t that important or impressive any longer. Get over it.
I read this one will have the husband stay at home so that is a little different from the regular formula.
Broken record, but given the premise and performer I am not sure at all why this is single-camera. SAMANTHA WHO? suffered artistically from the canned feel of single-camera, that didn’t allow Applegate to show how likable she can be. There are some shows and performers who benefit from that format (like Carell) but studio audiences love Applegate.
If this show does not succeed, can we please get a nice long arc for Christina on Modern Family? As mentioned above, studio audiences love her. Just remember where it all began.
Modern Family is not shot in front of a studio audience…….thanks.
I am well aware of that fact Laura. I was making the point that studio audiences first fell in love with Christina on Married…With Children. Millions of MWC fans would love to see her sharing the screen once again with Ed O’Neill, particularly on a show that is a direct descendant of MWC.
anyone remember a time when television used to make stars? now we are subjected to about 12-15 actors/actresses EVERY year! Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result? Give Some NEW FACES a chance tv people!!!!!! This will get picked up bc it’s christina applegate. most likely it goes 1 season and gets cancelled. chin up though…the powers that be will offer u something else next pilot season:)
David’s right. Audience’s like to discover their stars. Modern Family only had one name, if Ed O’Neill even counts as one. But network and studio executives are so terrified they trot out the same tired names every season instead of taking a risk.
