In one of the biggest talent deals this pilot season, Damon Wayans has been tapped to star in CBS’ untitled sports radio show pilot. The multicamera comedy, from veteran writer-producers Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, CBS TV Studios and the Tannenbaum Co., is inspired by ESPN personality Colin Cowherd’s outspoken sports talk show. It centers on Nick (Wayans), an egotistical sports-radio host with a quick wit and cocky likability who is adored by his fans. When he’s on the air, Nick says he is “right about everything.” But the moment he steps out of the booth, “I’m just a schmuck trying to keep three women from freaking out on me.” The deal with Wayans, which took several weeks to close, is said to be for a top-dollar acting fee and a substantial piece of the show’s potential backend. On TV, Gersh-repped Wayans most recently starred on ABC’s long-running sitcom My Wife and Kids, which he also co-created.

A true comedic artist. He should have been nominated (for a Golden Globe at least) for his hilarious turn in “Bamboozled”.
Didn’t CBS learn its lesson with making a show around an ESPN personality with the horrible show “Listen Up” with Jason Alexander, which was about the life of Tony Kornheiser
Wow. Great casting. This is one of the top comedy scripts of this pilot season. I think Damon will be perfect.
I’m sorry. I have to do the race thing: Finally: A BLACK SITCOM (or a sitcom starring a black man with a family) on a major network!!! (No TBS or BET) I read the pilot,… And it’s not about him being black… No jive in the script… it’s just cute and smart and I hope it gets picked up. Can you believe conservative CBS did this? Of all the networks. — Go ‘head, do your thang, CBS! Get that NAACP Award!!! — (Sorry, I know. Too black.) Well done, CBS. Get an EMMY too!
First, the outspoken Mr. Cowherd, who is often inappropriate and, at least on his radio show, is noted for saying outrageous things just to get a reaction from his listeners, might want to read carefully when taking about the fact that an African American actor has been cast to (essentially) play him.
Second, why in the world would any network at this point think that a show set in the old world media of radio would be of interest to a contemporary audience?
What next, a show about the newspaper industry? (Oops, actually CBS tried that too a season ago with “The Tower.” We all know how that turned out.)
Ladies and gents, I think CBS have just found the perfect replacement for Two and a Half Men. It’s got a big name lead and unlike TaaHM, it actually promises to be genuinely funny. I’m looking forward to seeing this show on Monday nights this Fall.
“Old world media of radio”?
I would have to say that radio is still a big business. Toss in the fact that Cowheard’s show like its sister show Mike & Mike are dual platform entities and are both a television AND a radio program make it a cross platform industry. Show’s like Cowheard’s are trying to evolve themselves out of being purely radio programs. Through the use of television and the podcast/internet. Radio itself is only a platform for new media as is television and the internet. Do not pigeon hole yourself by classifying radio as a dying form when a lot of programs are diversifying themselves such as this.
Toss in the fact that radio is still very much in the forefront on television. Gary Unmarried was centered around the fact that he became a sports radio host, and the show did not fail because that he was unrelatable.
Wow, I’m a big fan of Cowherd’s radio show, but how this is a sitcom that will actually be funny, I have no idea. I know he has connections, but damn, this is a horrible idea/premise.
Wayans? Tannenbaums? I smell a turd in the making.
I’ve never been bothered to comment before. But I’m an unbiased guy who just had a chance to read the script. Who really thinks it was good? Come on. The writing was awful, the lead completely unlikeable and the women all poorly stereotyped. Poor Damon. Love him. But I promise you this will last as long as “Hank”, their last show… And Cowherd is pretty racially inappropriate, so, interesting casting.
