BREAKING: Darren Aronofsky has withdrawn from The Wolverine, 20th Century Fox’s sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It’s a surprising development for the Oscar-nominated Black Swan director, who has been meeting with Hugh Jackman and getting ready to start production. Deadline has heard that his withdrawal has to do with his breakup with actress Rachel Weisz, and custody issues involving their son. All but two weeks of the film will be shot in Japan (a few scenes are being shot in Canada). His withdrawal had nothing to do with the script, because I’m told that Chris McQuarrie delivered. Or even the current crisis in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami. Aronofsky simply couldn’t be out of the country that long. There hadn’t been a firm start date. There was once an intention to start in the spring, but the situation in Japan and Jackman’s Real Steel promotional schedule pushed things back a bit.
Fox just confirmed the development and issued a statement.
Stated Aronofsky: “As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of ‘The Wolverine’ would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”
Stated Twentieth Century Fox: “While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do ‘The Wolverine’, we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan’ with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making ‘The Wolverine’. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”

This does not bode well for this franchise. It needs a powerful director like Aronofsky to Nolan it up a bit. I am less enthusiastic about it now.
TRUTH:
This is about a confident and competent filmmaker being completely UNINTERESTED in having Tom Rothman tell him how to make his movie.
We salute you, Mr. Aronofsky.
What, no spittle crusted rant about it being News Corp?
How wrong you are speak false to insanity. these things are NEVER about what is announced. It IS about an arrogant, asshole, alleged auteur, who thinks he’s the smartest guy in every room. He most likely pissed Fox off about something…shooting in Japan maybe?…and got shot down. He likes to win, and he lost.
True. But good for him for putting his family first. Priorities are hard to come by in this town.
Nooooooooo!
Damn… I was really excited to see what he would do with such a mainstream property.
Gavin Hood’s not busy.
This is a real shame, but it’s refreshing to see someone in this business put their family first.
Amen to that! I salute his decision.
That really sucks. Would have love to have seen what he would have done with this. Rachel Weitz is now my least favorite actress. Damn you James Bond!
Yeah damn you James Bond! You killed someone’s dream project!
Japan? Really?
They are doing a take on the classic Frank Miller, Chris Claremont Wolverine mini-series from the 80′s. Set in Japan. Awesome.
V
Darren and Rachel Weisz weren’t married. Just sayin’.
I’m kind of really happy about this. I like Aronofsky, but I never thought this was a good fit.
Now, my interest in this film just exited.
Am I the only who thinks he’s totally overrated? His films are pretentious bile.
you are
yes, you are the only one.
Yes, it certainly looks that way.
No, you aren’t the only one. I can’t connect with his films either. I thought BLACK SWAN was good once it decided what it was — in other words, the last third of the movie. The other two thirds were a documentary about what a ballerina’s bun looks like moving through different environments.
His films are visual masterpieces. You obviously don’t appreciate film if you want to call his work “pretentious bile”.
aronofsky is style over content which is perfect for crap hollywood big budget movies.
Everyone relax…this`ll have a 2 star rating on cable in a few years
Fascinating. Liam Neeson takes heat for asking a project to merely delay so he can deal with personal business, while Aronofsky gets sympathy and support for bailing entirely. Which one is it? And don’t tell how many actors are in Hollywood, desperate to work. There are that many directors drinking coffee by the gallon at meeting after meeting and just as eager.
Exactly. Though I think the fact that directors get more general respect than actors has something to do with it, it should also be noted that a change of directors on this project won’t be devastating; Liam not reprising his astounding role in Taken would be just that.
Besides – it’s an “X-Men” movie. Do most of us really care who directs it, or that it will exist at all?
Liam is happy to reprise the role, he is only asking for a delay, that’s my point…let’s face it, in the grand scheme of things, a year is not that long to wait for the heart of your project. Or, it shouldn’t be. A year only feels like a long time when you’re 10 years old. Surely there’s someone else on contract who is ready to shoot something now?
I personally understand Aronofsky’s bail, for the record. I think we should be that nice to everybody.
“Besides – it’s an “X-Men” movie. Do most of us really care who directs it, or that it will exist at all?”
It’s so (not) funny. When I was growing up and fell in love with movies, it was the films for adults that got all of the attention. They were the ones you wanted to see.
Now comic book / toy / action movies get the lion’s share of this town’s resources and an R rating is a bad thing.
I don’t want kids, and really have no desire to make a career of entertaining them. Talk about a bait and switch!
Exactly
Please get Bryan Singer after he is done with Jack.
It would have been interesting to see what Aronofsky brought to this franchise….
Maybe, at the end of the day, another interesting director will replace him…we shall see.
Bring in Brett Ratner he’s the go-to guy in a situation like this
The franchise already sucks big time – keep it up by bringing in Ratner, great choice.
So glad Aronofsky bowed out of this. It’s soooo beneath him.
Winning!
Believe it or not, this is a good thing. Black Swan was wildly overrated (as was The Wrestler), and I don’t Aronofsky would’ve been able to wrap his head around something like The Wolverine, which requires an audience-friendly flair for action and an unpretentious sense of humor. When I think “Darren Aronofsky,” those traits don’t immediately spring to mind. I’m hoping Matt Reeves or even Bryan Singer jumps onto this.
“Japan? Really?”
What is arguably Wolverine’s single most iconic storyline takes place in Japan.
Good news — Jackman does not have to gain that 20 pounds. And if Wolverine can’t go to Japan this year, maybe Jackman can do something on Broadway again. Aronofsky doesn’t fit, anyhow.
Robert Zemeckis is available…
As much as I wanted to see Aronofsky’s take, I think it’s the best move in the long run. With the bad reaction of the first Wolverine, the new one will probably turn out to be commercially disappointing whether it’s any good or not. But the wrong lessons would be learned and the commercial failure would have been blamed on Aronofsky being too arty. Which would have in turn made studios reluctant to hire good directors and instead keep Brett Ratner on the payroll.
I know there are a lot of assumptions in that scenario but it easily could’ve happened. And I know Aronofsky’s itching to do a big commercial product, but as much as I love the X-Men, directing the sixth installment of a waning franchise isn’t preferable to tackling something new.
What if Aronofsky makes Moon Knight in black and white 3D for Marvel?
First At the Mountains of Madness collapses, now this! Whhhhyyyyy?!
SHATTERED DREAMS!!!!
I can’t stomach this anymore. I was totally feeling confident about this, but now…
and does that mean that Jackman can STOP EATING?
Aronofsky is a smart man. This “franchise” is deader than Tron, and everybody knows it. The only person interested in keeping this turd going is Hugh Jackman, who’s never been able to open another movie.
Fox probably didn’t fund this turd properly, after all their only intention is to keep producing sequels to keep the rights to the character. I expect announcements of a smaller budget, a c-list director, and a delayed start.
Wait you forgot the deadest franchise of all now going through a mini comic resurgence….Nolan’s Run!
Mc G !!!!!!!!
Good point. Terminator Salvation was a really good movie for the genre and I think he would be awesome for this dying franchise.
Great point, Wolverine is a dead franchise just like the Terminator series is. So hire a studio hack to come in and make a crappy sequel just like he’s done time and time again.
McG is the McDonald’s of directors.
Gavin Hood’s not busy?! Gavin Hood can’t get arrested after that POS he turned in last time around.
