Ed Harris is set to star opposite Julianne Moore in HBO Films’ Game Change, which Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone has come on board to produce.
Harris will portray Sen. John McCain in the movie, which follows McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, from his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (Moore) as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election. Based on the bestselling book Game Change, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, the film is directed by Jay Roach and written by Danny Strong, whose previous collaboration was HBO’s Recount, about the 2000 Florida recount. Playtone is producing in association with Roach’s Everyman Pictures, with Hanks, Goetzman and Roach executive producing. Strong serves as co-executive producer. Harris, who has 4 Oscar nominations, also played a presidential candidate in the 1992 feature comedy Running Mates. On HBO, he previously starred in the movie Empire Falls, which earned him an Emmy nomination.
In addition to Game Change, HBO also is developing a miniseries about former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Ed Harris is a nice guy, very unpretentious and a true professional. He mostly keeps to himself during production. I worked on a film with him where he was nominated for an Oscar and I was very impressed.

Agree. Hogan would have been perfect. He plays crazy great and McCain has a bit of the crazy in him. As he frequently quoted star wars during the last election, there’s a sci fi fit as well.

With regards to Ed Harris playing John McCain (who’s actually more liberal than conservative if anyone wanted to bother to spend five seconds doing some research), Ed is too young for the role though I expect they’ll age him up with make-up. Seems like a decent enough man in interviews so I’ll reserve judgement until I see him in action though I assume this will be about as “fair and balanced” as a movie about Martin Luther King written, produced, directed, funded and starring members of the KKK.

Speaking of makeup – if you’re gonna plug in the traditional left wing nut job to play McCain, why didn’t they go all the way and just give the part to Pelosi? Think about it.
“Jowls” from years of bouts with cancer…Harris is a decent actor but as a man, and politics aside, could not hold a candle to what Sen. McCain has done and been through in his life.
This is going to be an interpretation. The actors aren’t going to make themselves look EXACTLY like the parts. We know the “characters” (McCain, Palin, Obama, Biden) so well that they don’t need to be identical to them, just resemble their essence. Since these are damn good actors, they’ll likely do that.
I just finished reading this book a few weeks ago, and I was blown away by it. So far the casting has been great, but I’m more curious about how much of the scope of the book they are going to retain. The book follows all the major players of the 2008 campaign over a period of years. They would need a mini-series to cover most of the book, unless they are going to focus on one campaign, only.
Since political stump speeches are almost word-for-word throughout the campaign, you don’t have to do every appearance over and over. That will cut a bunch out of the film’s coverage right there.
Same with all the question/answer sessions…always the same questions, always the same answers. Everyday Politics is boring actually…except for Sarah, who has shown a difficulty with remembering what she says from one place to the next. And her decision to not answer MSM questions at all.
Should be a short film actually.

Sorry to say…But the right did a piece on Hillay Clinton called Hillary the movie… (It’s actually a DOCUMENTARY)…..They did this documentary before the 2008 election when they found out that Hillary decided to run for president. The right was so sure that Hillary would win the nomination….. that they decided to slander her in this documentary piece to release when she won the nomination….but they were wrong…Obama won the nomination…. and the white house….lol
