EXCLUSIVE: Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain have stepped down as executive producers on the CW drama pilot The Secret Circle, based on a three-book series from The Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith. Under their Warner Bros TV overall deal, the Angel and Dollhouse alums last summer were assigned to supervise writer Andrew Miller in developing the project and serve as showrunners on the potential pilot/series. The project was set up at the CW in October. Then, in January, Kevin Williamson was brought in to rewrite Miller’s script. Williamson’s draft was picked up to pilot, with him serving as executive producer/showrunner.
Craft and Fain have a longstanding relationship with Williamson: they worked on his WB series Glory Days and currently serve as consulting producers on his CW series with Julie Plec The Vampire Diaries. But despite the three having a great shorthand, the feel was that there was duplication of showrunner duties and too many bosses on Secret Circle. Realizing that with Williamson on board, they were no longer needed as showrunners, Fain and Craft opted to move on and focus on development under their deal at WBTV in what was described as an amicable departure. Fain and Craft previously created/executive produced the ABC series Women’s Murder Club and served as showrunners on Dollhouse.
As for Secret Circle, which centers on a California teen (Britt Robertson) who moves to her mom’s hometown of New Salem and discovers that she is a witch, Williamson and Miller are exec producing the pilot with Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. If it goes to series, Plec could come on board, with her and Williamson possibly juggling showrunner duties on Circle and Vampire Diaries next season.

I just fear that Kevin and Julie are taking on too much. It’s hard enough to keep up the amazing quality of ONE show (TVD), let alone two. Hey, there are no two minds I’d rather have launching this new franchise, but don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help, guys. You need lives, too.
Having said all that, who couldn’t be excited for Secret Circle? An amazing cast and another popular book series. This, along with at least two other pilots (I certainly hope!!…though the casting on most is “ehh”) really give the new CW chief a firm footing to arrive on.
they can do whatever they want, they have every right and have been in the biz long enough (stephanie sav and josh schwartz have multiple pilots and shows)
Savage and Schwartz have exactly one show on the air. (Which was from someone else’s book series and basically forced on them by WBTV). They have had multiple pilot scripts purchased over the last couple of years which have not been picked-up.
Not trying to be a kook, but I’m amazed at the rep these two have as being some sort of remarkably brilliant parntership.
Plus, they are notorious for firing people that dare challenge them. “Don’t you know who we think we are?!”
“Amicable.” Isn’t that always the word?
what happened to “creative differences”?
this is a sinking ship glad they got into their life boats early
I’m pretty sure Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain weren’t showrunners on Dollhouse. It was Joss Whedon. They were executive producers (and only for the first season, I think).
@Jason
Julie Plec isn’t involved with this show… yet. And they said that The Vampire Diaries would be they’re main concern. Also, I think The CW wouldn’t risk the damaging the quality of their main (only?) hit.
I don’t believe Joss has showrun anything since the third season of Buffy.
has anyone noticed the young cast is all white? it’s giving a new spin on “secret circle”
Jessica Parker Kennedy is half Italian and half African American.
No one cares if the cast is all white. People care if the show is good or bad.
We don’t tune in to count how many of each race is represented.
You sound white.
Exactly, Anon
Since when do people care if a show is good or not???? Have you seen the sh@t on tv? Actually caring about diversity that includes other people than “alternative sexual life styles” might actually make a difference!
Speaking of diversity can that asian actress (I could easily IMDB it and not call her that asian actress but I’m feeling lazy) from last year’s Melrose Place get some pilot love. She is insanely hot. I want her to be my wifey.
WBTV should have given Wonder Woman to Craft and Fain.
Now THAT’s a great idea!
I love the book series The Secret Circle. I think it would be a great show!!
Have known Sarah and Liz since they first started out. They’re great talents and, more important, great people. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with in development.
aaaahhhh…. not so much, maybe nice people but talented? On a sliding scale which is what people seem to be using in hollywood, ok maybe, but in real life, not so much.
I always said that this show should be a series. It’s a good book, but I am a little disappointed about the Hendricks twins. They were so funny in the book.
Having a good series is good. But, Actually diversity does matter, especially when there is a limited representation of different races and groups. If you are in that group you do get a little annoyed with the lack of diversity in shows. It’s also annoying to actually think about it. But it’s like being odd ball out in a group and having the media representing women as homemakers stereotypes. It wouldn’t be a problem if shows represented several representation of each group.
