Brothers & Sisters alumna Emily VanCamp is returning to ABC as the star of a potential new primetime drama, Revenge. VanCamp has landed the lead in the project, written by Swingtown creator Mike Kelley and to be directed by Phillip Noyce. It is a contemporary re-imagining of The Count of Monte Cristo from a female perspective and centers on Emily Thorn (Van Camp), a mysterious woman who comes to the Hamptons to exact revenge on the people who destroyed her family. VanCamp, who joined Brothers & Sisters midway through the first season, left the family drama last fall. The actress, repped by ICM and Thruline, previously co-starred on the WB’s Everwood.
Lights Out co-star Meredith Hagner has been cast as the second lead opposite Lucy Griffiths in in the CW’s zombie thriller Awakening. The project, from WBTV and Reveille, is about two sisters (Griffiths, Hagner) coming of age and facing off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising. The pilot is in second position to Lights Out, which has been struggling in the ratings. Hagner, repped by Abrams Artists and Suskin Management, also recurred on USA’s Royal Pains.
Mo Gaffney has been added to the cast of ABC’s comedy pilot My Freakin’ Family, which centers on young parents Anna (Ellen Woglom) and Raj (Ravi Patel), whose lives change after they have a baby and the four grandparents with very different cultural backgrounds descend upon their lives. Gaffney, repped by Stone Manners Salners, will play Anna’s opinionated mother.
Shane McRae has been cast in CBS’ untitled Jeff and Jackie Filgo comedy pilot (aka Homegrown) starring Becki Newton. It centers on a blue-collar guy who wrestles with how to parent his unmarried grown daughter (Newton) and her 12-year-old son while sharing a house with them as well as his wife and recently widowed mother. McRae, repped by Gersh and TNT Management, will play the boy’s father. He can be seen in The Adjustment Bureau.
Riley Smith (24) is set to co-star in CW’s pilot Cooper & Stone. The pilot, from writer Laurie Arent and CBS TV Studios, is about Jenna Cooper (Alex Breckenridge) and Stone, two smart young female detectives on Chicago’s North Side who are best friends, equally adept at discussing fashion, music and pop culture as they are solving homicides. Smith will play a hot-shot vice detective with the Chicago PD who is transferred to the Northside from the Southside after his cover is blown in a high-risk operation. He enjoys needling Stone, whom he competed against at the academy, and it seems they have a history of sexual tension as well as professional tension.
Chris Carmack and Robert Hoffman round out the cast of ABC’s dancing drama pilot Grace, which centers on famous choreographer and womanizer Michael Grace (Eric Roberts). Impression-repped Hoffman will play a hot dancer from his company; Carmack will play a musician.
Nancy Travis has joined the CW’s drama pilot Hart of Dixie as a guest star/recurring. The project, from writer Leila Gerstein, WBTV and Fake Empire, is a comedic drama centering on a young New York City doctor, Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson), who inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by an eclectic group of characters. Gersh-repped Travis will play a no-nonsense nurse who becomes a surrogate mother to Zoe.

Emily is such a great lovely young actress. I loved her as Amy on Everwood. I really hope the show gets picked up, because I would definitely give it a try because of her.
Agree – Emily such a beauty. She was the best on “Everwood”. Miss that show.
Is the script for ABC’s Revenge any good?
It is a good script, but it felt like a great movie, not a tv show. Just my opinion, and without being spoilery, I think as a serial it will lose the intensity that makes it interesting and will become one of those soapy shows where you’re frustrated because stories are being dragged out instead of resolved and the audience just feels strung along. But that’s just my take, and to be fair, I have to say the writing was great and the characters were interesting, really well thought out and developed, not cookie cutter. Guess we’ll see!
R.I.P. Awakenings. Worst castings ever? Who is in charge at CW?
They’re both great actors. Why the hate?
They might well be. But the CW demo demands/requires some sort of “recognition” or “connection”…and I’d venture that not a single CW viewer has a clue who either lead actress even IS, let alone wanting to sit and watch them every week.
Riley, on the other hand, is a known commodity and a great casting. But the network has proven time and again that it simply does not know how to cast its shows. From Melrose Place (most boring actors ever) to 90210 (ditto…see complete overhaul) to even Stefan on VD (the new QB on FNL was rejected for Wesley?!), it’s been a series of miscastings. And that is the first and most key thing that attracts interest to a new series.
I can’t wait to see Riley on a regular basis! He’s ridiculously talented and I can’t wait to see him!
Riley is a whitebread, nondescript blandosity. Just like everything and everyone else on CW.
Great news! The Revenge script is really solid; it’s definitely my favorite of pilot season. Go EVC!
It seems to me that Paul Lee is a much more creative type than Stephen McPherson. He seems to be embracing edgier shows than McPherson did.
Paul did a great job branding and programming ABC Family. But I think Cable is a better place to pigeon hole your network (e.g., ABC Family = Family/Teen Girls, USA = Character’s welcome) ABC as a whole has a lot of work to do to rebrand and grab viewers each night. McPherson had lightning in a bottle? Or was he just good back then and faltered later? Who knows. Paul is also being very cautious about what goes on the air and who gets cast. I heard casting directors & associates were frustrated at this cautiousness having to actually screen test actors a couple of times over and over again to be sure. He gets final say. So, expect to see well liked, familiar actors and actresses from ABC’s properties first like Emily get the roles …
Other than the casting decision for Chris Egan as Edgar Allan Poe which was awful, the casting decisions like Eric Roberts, Sherri Saum, Christina Ricci and Ashley Judd are very good decisions and have plot lines that are interesting.
Watch Hagner in the Royal Pains pilot and you will see what she can do.. Good choice CW!

UNKEY AANKHO KO KABHEE GHORE SAY DAIKHA HAY FARAZ
SONAY WALON KEY TARHA JAGNAY WALOON JAISEY
Brothers and sisters started in 2006 and Emily joined in the middle of the second season. It does sound like a great idea
Emily didn’t join B&S in season two it was season one jake.
I want to punch someone in the face everytime I hear the description for Cooper & Stone.
I love Emily and the show sounds interesting.
@Murph, @John Tompkins
Where can I read the script?
LOVE LOVE Emily!!! Hope revenge is good….sounds interesting!!!
And the parade of white faces continues during the casting process. How about some diversity on the TV Networks? Cast actors who look like the real America.
“Revenge” sounds like a flimsy plot as well as a one dimensional title. Van Camp is poorly suited for the role with bland demure presence.
Expect a title change in the least and at most it won’t get picked up.
You’re nuts. The CW finally cast two girls who act first and are hot second.
Love Emily VanCamp. I was sorry to see her leave Brothers & Sisters, especially after her “real life” relationship with David Anabelle (Justin) ended and he became engaged to another girl. Emily got the boot shortly thereafter. Not cool.
Allison, that’s simply untrue. Dave and Emily broke up well before then, and by all accounts remained friends. In fact, they broke up IRL not long after Justin and Rebecca got together.
The fact is, Rebecca and Holly were interesting characters but when they were disconnected from the Walkers (in one of the dumbest retrocons ever) it was time for them to go.
Emily chose to leave Brothers and Sisters. She said the character had run it’s course and asked to leave the show. She made the right decision, because the Rebecca character was going no where and all Justin and Rebecca would do is argue.
Good for Mo Gaffney, she rocks!
Agreed on Mo Gaffney – she rocks. My screens need way mo Mo!
