EXCLUSIVE: Simon Cowell and Fox may be looking to shake things up in the on-air department of the upcoming reality series X Factor. I hear pop star Enrique Iglesias has been approached to star on the singing competition series. But in an interesting twist, I hear he is being courted to be the host of the show.
Having a music superstar as host would certainly set X Factor apart from the other reality series, which are fronted predominantly by TV and radio hosts/presenters. That includes Fox’s American Idol (Ryan Seacrest), ABC’s Dancing with the Stars (Tom Bergeron) and NBC upcoming The Voice (Carson Daly). Coincidentally, Cowell also took a more unusual approach on his NBC talent series America’s Got Talent, tapping actor-comedian Nick Cannon as host.
As for Iglesias, I hear he may be more open to a judging than hosting gig on X Factor. But, with his latest album Euphoria doing well and his most recent single, Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You), peaking at #1 on the US Pop Songs Chart earlier this month, he is reportedly leaning towards sticking with his music career full-time.
Iglesias has crossed paths with Cowell before. While promoting Euphoria, he performed on the British X Factor last year. He has also doubled into acting, including a role in the movie Once Upon a Time in Mexico and guest sports on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men. Additionally, he has served as a guest co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly.
No host or judges have been locked in yet for X Factor, which starts auditions on March 27. Cowell has been discussing names reportedly in the mix for judges, including Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, Jessica Simpson, George Michael, Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole.

Looks like Simon’s quite nervous about NBC’s THE VOICE. They have a killer roster of coaching talent. First to market, this show is going to blunt X-Factor. Come the Fall consumers are gonna be like, “whatta me-too” show.
I think the launch date for The Voice is a real problem
The judges line up IS good but come end of April, Idol will be down to the final five and I’m not sure people will want to invest in a whole new music competition show
Plus The Voice format is kind of goofy
I want what this NBC employee is smoking…
I don’t think the inclusion of Iglesias is a good idea in any capacity whether host or judge. Overall he’s not known for singing talent and/or being much of a performer. He’s got a famous dad a some hit singles as a vocalist but he wouldn’t be on my list. Perhaps they’re thinking about tapping into the pop and/or latin market? If so then go with Ricky Martin.
Cowell should know well enough that choosing Cheryl Cole is a no brainer. She’s likable, knows how to be a judge on the show, she’s drop dead gorgeous and will set the tabloid world ablaze here in the states. He also has great chemistry with her which is what’s needed.
Pick Cole, Abdul and Ricky Martin and you’ve got all the bases covered.
Hosting gigs need HOSTS not stars. Nick Cannon is TERRIBLE on America’s Got Talent so pick someone who can move the show along like Ty Treadway or AJ Hammer.
Agree with most of your comment but not about Cheryl Cole!!! her and simon was pathetic together on xfactor uk, fake flirting no chemistry at all infact they both only came across as smug, arrogant and thinking they are they “cool guys” infact she has lost a lot of fans after her stint on the last season of xfactor a lot of people hope she gets the US job to get her off the tv in the UK so if the US want her please have her!!!
I agree with JJ about Cheryl Cole. She’s very likable. Some of the things that have happened to her aren’t her fault like the Malaria. Its the tabloids that are taking advantage of her.
Have to agree with M L. Simon and Cheryl together are annoying. Extremely FAKE. Simon needs to be sitting next to Paula Abdul. Their REAL chemistry is the stuff television producers dream about but rarely find. I imagine she will be in the chair next to Simon and snotty Cheryl will be far across the pond. Sorry UK.
And I agree with JJ and Jim, part of what makes The X Factor a hit is Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole’s banter. It was fun to watch this year. I hope she’s on the American judging panel.
I think this show is going to blow Idol away and The Voice might have beaten both in Holland, but they didn’t have Simon Cowell as competition.
They should look at George Stroumboulopoulos. I know he was on the titanic called “the One”, but he’s a great host, with real music chops.
He hosts Canada’s The Hour – a hybrid of news and celebrity . The Hour is Canada’s only late-night talk show. It has won eight Gemini Awards. Stroumboulopoulos has hosted a range of guests from world leaders to celebrities and politicians.
Really smart, an unafraid host with a real edge too.
Enrique Iglesias is the biggest latin artist in the world and a latin icon and a grammy winner and multi platinum recording artist, he is a must if you want a huge and successful show he reaches out to all the world and spatially latinos, in america there are 44 million legal latinos and another 44 million illegal, with the most #1 songs in history of latin top songs with 22 #1 songs in the latin billboard songs and he is the most artist who has #1 songs in the billboard charts more than any artist, Enrique is a Singer/Songwriter/Producer/ Actor/model,he will be a terrific judge.
I’ve been an Enrique Iglesias fan since 1997 when he was singing only in Spanish. He has 22 Billboard #1 hit songs on the latin charts. That’s the most in history. He may not have the best voice or put on the best concerts, but he definitely has that X-FACTOR. As his fan, I don’t think he would do this. It just doesn’t strike me as something that he would halt his music career to do. He loves making new music and touring. It WOULD bring him a lot of attention and help his career, but I wouldn’t bet money that he would actually do this. It’s nice that he is being considered, though. He was considered to be a judge on The Voice also. I think Ricky Martin would have the time and the desire to do this gig if he was asked. I wouldn’t mind Ricky either if they wanted to get a judge from latin music.
I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE HOST. EITHER ONE MENTIONED WOULD BE OK WITH ME.
WHAT I DO WANT TO SEE IS PAULA AND SIMON-GET BACK TOGETHER!!
HOW GREAT WOULD THAT BE!!!!!!!
So you go for Enrique as a host instead of a better looking Latino with hosting skill like Mario Lopez?
Thankfully he’s not being courted for the panel. If anything, that should go to someone like Ricky Martin. Not Enrique.
Enrique can only wish he can do an MTV Unplugged special half as good as Martin.
Simon has said he wants an unconvential female host and a male singer host…..For the one who recommended Ricky martin – while I think its a great fabulous exciting idea that would actually WORK WELL – hes committed to doing Evita on Broadway in 2012 and is currently embarking on a world tour so thats a no go – but I think that would have been a great gig for him and he could have been in a stationary location for his kids. THR already has reported that LA Reid is signed on as a judge…so that means the other 2 will most likely be female. I hope its not Nicole Scherzinger- I dont think shes a big enough talent – singer or name…esp when THE VOICE has Christina….I also dont think he should do Paula – we’ve seen that already- and Cheryl is a nobody int he US – but since shes with Derreck H ough they can be a tabloid sensation. Mariah probalby wants a stable job with her impending kids -and she hasnt had many hits lately and Simon already has a relationship with her hubby – so if she got hired, the final spot would have to be a white woman and Cheryl could get it at a lower $$ value. I think X Factor with t he tremdous promotional machine behind it (Fox even giving affiliates moneyt o hold their own contests and promotions) has potential to be bigger than IDOl but I do worry about the Voice blunting it. IT sounds like the same type of show with judges also acting as mentors and thatr will make Xfactor seem like a ‘me also’ but I dont know if pple are going to get into the voice when idol is at its top5….who knows? Personally I dont want to see all t hese talent shows- are they going to bar contestants who have auditionoed on idol or appeared in hollywood from being on the voice or x factor – youre gonna hve the same pple auditioning. Personally I hate Enrique Iglesias idea as a host but simon wants to do things differently. UK version seemed to have better production values than IDOL…ANd just one final word about AI and N Lythgoe – please stop lying and attacking Idol fans…Anyone who watched last week’s performance can tell they lipsynched (check realityblurred video) – the words didnt match the lips -the music was full blast while microphones werent even near mouths- it was a joke and a travesty- I dont like an ep who is so cocky that he actually attacks his viewers who are making logical complaints and suggestions to improve the show…and ihope steven and jlo will be honest with contestants- we dont need every judge to say everyperformance was great when it wasnt – viewers have ears too
Enrique is genius!! I actually thought they’d go with Ricky Martin but Enrique is better so down to earth and such a passion for music!!
