UPDATE: Peter and Bobby Farrelly with Fox will complete the casting on The Three Stooges by the end of next week. At this point, Hank Azaria has emerged as a frontrunner for the role of Moe, the group’s stern disciplinarian and the guy who dishes out the slaps and eye pokes. As for the simpleton Larry, the name I am most often hearing is James Marsden. Marsden worked for Fox as Cyclops in the original X-Men films, but he has played comedy in films like Enchanted and next stars in the Universal/Illumination Entertainment film Hop.
7:31 PM: MadTV alum and CBS’ $#*! My Dad Says star Will Sasso has been cast as Curly in The Three Stooges movie being made at 20th Century Fox and directed by the Farrelly brothers. Sasso did the films Life As We Know It, Best In Show, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Beverly Hills Ninja, and Happy Gilmore, and is currently shooting the lead role in the dramedy The Guys Who Move Furniture. He is repped by APA and D2 Management. The approval of the MGM pre-packaged bankruptcy opened the door for the long-gestating comedy to get made, and Fox took over the project for the Farrellys who are based there. This is the first casting for the comedy scripted by Bobby and Peter Farrelly with Mike Cerrone.
The role of Curly originated with Jerome “Curly” Howard, who suffered a stroke and was succeeded by his brother Samuel (Shemp). After Shemp died suddenly, he was replaced by Joe Besser, who gave way to the vaudeville vet Joe De Rita.
The Farrellys know that casting such iconic roles as The Three Stooges has always been a tall order, but Peter Farrelly told me he was “opening up these roles to the world right now. We’ll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we’re going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flintstones. You’ve got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown.”
The movie will follow the format of the original shorts that the Stooges made for Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn over 24 years. The film will be divided into three segments, each 27 minutes long, which gives the Farrellys the chance to use all three of the signature theme songs that started the classic shorts. The goal is to make a PG film, and still incorporate the physical comedy. “There will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done,” Farrelly said. “Our goal is 85 minutes of laughs in a film that will be very respectful of who the Stooges were. It’s by far the riskiest project we’ve ever done, without question, but it is also the one closest to our hearts.”
The Three Stooges has been a passion project for Conundrum for over a decade, first at Columbia Pictures, then Warner Bros, and finally MGM and then Fox. Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas will produce with Charles B. Wessler. The film will be exec produced by Earl Benjamin, the gatekeeper of the Stooges estate, and the stepson of Joe DeRita.

Will Sasso was a funny man on MadTV, but let’s be honest, this Three Stooges film is such a bad idea.
Agreed. Still not sure who’s interested in this.
This just might be the worst movie idea of all time. And now it’s being populated with nobodies. My guess is this movie never gets made.
I feel Jack Black would make a perfect Moe. Lots of energy slapstick comedy at its best!
I’m sure Abbott and Costello can’t be far behind. Let’s remake the Munsters too and Lassie and … all programming from the Jim Crow era when the world “obviously” so much better. Nothing like the gold old days.
Munsters has already been remade, as a short lived TV series that I think was either called The New Munsters or Munsters Today. It was awful.
The only reasonable TV series that was really done as a movie well was Adams Family.
Bryan Fuller is remaking The Munsters.
Abbott and Costello would be cool. Ed Harris and Nathan Lane?
John,
That’s a disgusting, cheap smear. Yeah, so the time period THEN had the Jim Crow crap etc. So what? What you seem to want, perhaps, is that we automatically don’t watch or listen to anything before, when- 1980? 1992? Please. The Three Stooges were great.
There WERE things GOOD about these so-called “good ol days”. There are things today that rot.
Stop being so one-sided and shallow.
APA again? Not bad guys!!
PERFECT!
I guess the three stoogiez were funny in the 30s/40s….but this seems like a horrible idea. They should make a bio pic about what these actors went through to make these films and how the studio used them and abused knowing that Jerome Howard was seriously ill the last few films. These guys were treated like complete trash.
They actually did this. There was a TV movie made in 2000 about the Stooges with Michael Chiklis (The Shield, NOF) as Curly, Evan Handler (Californication) as Larry, and Paul-Ben Victor (The Wire) as Moe.
It wasn’t a particularly memorable effort, except that it did deal with the problems in their lives, rather than concentrate on the slapstick humor on-screen.
Check it out on IMDB.com.
The casting is arbitrary and unless these 3 actors can do a seamless interpretation of the stooges, I guarantee – the project will fail. Using unknowns who won’t pull the audience out of the moment is a much better idea. James Marsden – Hank Azaria – Really??? Great guys I’m sure, but not the right choices at all. Clearly, the filmmakers are concerned that they need known actors with questionable abilities to pull this off. Rather, they should be concerned about talent and performance.
Love that movie!
No matter what one may think about a Three Stooges movie, you’ve got to admit this is great casting. Sasso not only looks like Curly Howard, but also he is good at slapstick comedy.
Yep, genius casting!
No surprise that the Farrelly brothers’ films which have gone from Crude to Cruder, now reach their nadir with that most base form of humor, low comedy. And the most undistilled practitioners of low comedy were The Three Stooges.
Imagine a filmmaker reveling in his vision of “Eighty-five minutes of non-stop slapping.”
this will be awful. who is the audience? is there a 3 stooges fan under 50 years old?
Yes, I’m 45 and I have 3 volumes of Stooges on Disk. They were the opening act on Super Host on Saturday afternoons here in Cleveland for years, right before his weekly Godzilla movie and Tarzan movie.
Count me as a big Stooges fan, and I’m in my 20′s.
I don’t get the whole Will Sasso thing. Fat? Yes. Funny? No.
In case you didn’t get the memo, Will Sasso is not fat anymore.
This will never work.
Crazy elephant!
Great start!
Horrible actor. Terrible way to start the casting process.
I would like to see play the part of curly howard is mark addy as curly or frank caliendo as curly or kevin p. farley as curly or will sasso as curly they look like curly howard please please
Addy – perfect!
Excellent call…
Will Sasso is a really gifted physical comedian. This is a great start to casting this movie.
pete agreed and kudos about willsasso, sunshine. They are shooting this in atlanta right, wish they come back to miami
I want to love this movie but I now have a bad feeling based on this quote: “There will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done.”
That is exactly wrong it’s 100% wrong. If that’s their vision of the Stooges then this is going to be a total misfire. Stooge fanatics will love it but it won’t bring in new viewers.
The very best Stooges shorts had the poor working guys suddenly gaining access to the world of the wealthy. The Stooges were never lazy they were just incompetent at everything they tried.
They were the ultimate populist comedians and when they somehow wound up in an elitist environment that’s where the comedy happened and it was magical.
I’m seriously wondering if the Farrelly Bros. truly understand the Stooges. They claim to be experts but I’m starting to have my doubts.
If they think this is another Dumb and Dumber but with three guys instead of two then they are totally wrong for this movie. Here’s a hint boys, the Stooges were really Smart and Smarter.
the conundrum for me is how a DeRita,(the last stooge)and not even blood, is the gatekeeper of the Stooge Estate,he must be a lawyer, Dewey Cheatem and How!
LOL More like I. Fleecum!
Dear Mr Gaunce,
Being an avid Stooges fan like yourself. I wonder if you remember when we played out
“Little Fly Upon The Wall” on the WBCN bus to a concert a long time ago. Everyone was laughing.
Now there’s a bunch of over 50 Stooges fans. Any Stooges remake gets my curiosity going!
wow?! this went from Jim Carrey, Sean Penn & Benicio Del Toro to this ??!!! Can’t get Tom Cruise ??? Let’s get Gilligan.
You are exactly right. They clearly can’t get anybody to commit to this project, which is a horrible, horrible idea. We’re going to get B Listers doing bad impressions of the original Stooges. As sloppy as the Farrelly’s are this film will likely clock in at about 2 hours. The Stooges were fun in 8 minute shorts. A feature film of constant eye gouging is going to be gigantically unfunny.
Why don’t they just cast the best Stooge impersonators like the guys who used to do the Stooges in Las Vegas they looked exactly like them like clones and they were really good. Cast the Vegas Stooges if they’re no longer together reunite them they were perfection.
Yessss!! Those guys who opened the show in Vegas were Perfect! I’m sick of this casting of Giant Stooges – I know there are guys who are just like the REAL Stooges, because I’ve seen them and heard them.
Wow, the caliber of actors has really dropped with this project. Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro were all attached to this at some point. Why not give this to David Gordon Green if they absolutely have to make this movie (which they shouldn’t)
Whatever they were smoking, luckily for them, the effects wore off.
Will Sasso is a great comedic actor, but dammit is he tall.I know they can’t be completely authentic with the casting, but I’m sure they can find actors physically closer to the real men.The 2000 movie was able to.
Larry – 5’4
Curly – 5’5
Moe – 5’4
Shemp – 5’5
Marsden as Larry – 5’10
Sasso as Curly – 6’3
Azaria as Moe – 5’11
2000 Film
Evan Handler as Larry – 5’9
Michael Chiklis as Curly – 5’8
Paul Ben-Victor as Moe – 5’7
John Kassir as Shemp – 5’8
Even when my self esteem was at it’s highest, I was never 5’9″ tall.
Evan greetings. You guys did the best Stooges movie ever you were perfectly cast and the script was a gem. Thanks for bringing Larry to life so perfectly. The Farrellys are going to screw this up something awful but at least we have the bio-pic you did. Kudos.
With all due respect to the talent in contention, but this is WORLDS away from having the quality of actors of two Academy Award winners in Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro and a known comedy actor in James Carrey. With that original cast involved making this film made sense, or at least gave the impression it would be more than just a “nyuk nyuk” movie. With Azaria, Marsden and Sasso, it just doesn’t seem worth the effort. I was always skeptical about this ever getting made, but now, why even bother?
I’m really astonished they’d make a full length feature “reimagining” (or whatever buzzword they attach to cover-up what should really be termed as creatively bankrupt) of the Three Stooges…I mean, they can’t be serious thinking this is going to be a profitable undertaking? Who greenlights projects like this? This sounds like it’s only going to end up as a huge embarassment.
if this is true it is 1/3 the best. i mean, the james marsden third.
Love Will Sasso! Funny guy on )+#* and funnier on Mad TV! Go FOX!
