Fox has scrapped the planned May preview of new adventure series Terra Nova. In other Fox May scheduling news, American Idol will revert to its original Tuesday-Wednesday air pattern for its finale, to air on Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25, the final 2 nights of the season.
Prehistoric drama Terra Nova, from producers Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin, originally eyed for a midseason premiere this season, had been scheduled to air a two-hour preview in May, followed by a fall launch. Because the producing team needs more time to work on the show’s elaborate visual effects, the preview has been pulled and the series will now premiere in the fall. “Terra Nova is one of the most ambitious television series ever produced,” Fox’s entertainment president Kevin Reilly said. “The cutting-edge visual effects used to create the world of Terra Nova, which is of massive scope and scale, require more time to be realized. This aspect of the series is essential, so we are pushing back the special early preview date to give the visual effects team the time needed for their ground-breaking work.”
The Terra Nova preview was scheduled to air over two nights, Monday May 23 and Tuesday, May 24, at 9 PM. Now Fox will air the season finales of The Chicago Code and Glee in the slots, with Glee following the performance finale of Idol.

Or… they’re scared that they spent too much money and it’s STILL going to flop.
Same thing happened with the original 2hr backdoor pilot for LOGJAMMERS. The execs were so scared they ended up just scraping it altogether. Still think Peter Tuiasosopo would have crushed it in the role of Rock Hardio.
is this true about the Logjammers pilot? Is it not happening? I thought it was one of the most well crafted pilot scripts I’ve read in a long time. I was hoping it would score a spot on the fall schedule.
You read LOGJAMMERS Dana? That thing has been under lock and key. You want to jam?
Sweet Jesus. What IS LOGJAMMERS!?!?
They’re renaming it “Terra Nova: Turn Off The Dark.”
This is just a train wreck in the making.
This could end up being Fox’s 2011 version of NBC’s Supertrain.
Terra NEVAH!
Yea, this very promising series is having way too many problems (or delays).
Now, i have to think of my fall fave ‘Love Bites’.
Shelley Conn didn’t have much to say of the series when she appeared on a british breakfast show.
This ill conceived and ridiculously expensive project has ‘flop’ written all over it.
FOX should’ve planned this as a mini-series to keep all of the curiousity driven tune-in to check out folks that will swell their ratings…but only temporarily.
Plan for delays in airings, hyped up promos with a big premiere followed by let down fans and message board griping.
SyFy airs special f/x stuff all the time and never gets huge ratings. It’s not unique even if the quality in the f/x is much greater. We’ve seen this before and it’s not enough to grab the viewers needed to turn a profit.
Never a good sign when they push. However, I hope this works. Yes, it’s a huge gamble, but risks can make for innovative and exciting entertainment. I’m sick of watching shows that are only about cops, lawyers and doctors.
They are probably panicking that they forgot to add a vampire or werewolf to the plot.
Why may I ask are they going back 75 FREAKING millions years in the past to restart humanity, when they can go back only 5,000 years if they want to start from scratch? SO STUPID, I hope it fails.
Because there were no dinosaurs only 5,000 yhears ago don’t you know anything? People want to see dinosaurs ou dimwit. In order to have dinosaurs you have to clone them but we already saw that so the only alternative is to send the people far back in time. This way they can all be eaten by the dinosaurs that’s their punishment for being so stupid!
I’ve been saying this for months.
Terra Nova will never see the light of day. Or a television screen–take your pick.
I can smell the fear from here.
It’s Virtuality all over again.
You can’t spell terrible without Terra.
Does anyone else find it a little prophetic that this story is above one about SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE LIGHTS? Anyone?
Why all the negativity? It sounds friggin awesome! I believe in Kevin Reilly and I’m looking forward to watching Terra Nova. Fox is not afraid to spend money, so be patient, it’s coming and I’m predicting a huge hit.
^^^^This guy is either stoned, bi-polar or has ASPERGERS. (if he thinks Terra Nova is going to be good)
Or very, very darkly sarcastic too.
Take your pick, America. I know I do. Everyday.
While I believe that this is going to be total crap, I do believe their special effects story for the reason of delay. I don’t know why, but how much they have invested into it, I think that they have something somewhat special they are willing to put the time into and make it great.
Weird the vfx are the cause of the delay since they were able to have fx heavy promos ready for the superbowl spots (that wasted money isn’t coming back). This thing is a turkey. I feel sorry for the 35 executive producers.
What’s “Terra Nova”? A new FOX show? Haven’t heard of it. Happens a lot.
Bravo, Brannon! Bravo! It’s my favorite Braga show yet – an empty screen!
Honestly, the premise just doesn’t interest me. And it has no stars. And all i can think of is how these time-traveling idiots will end up altering history and wiping out humanity somehow.
I can understand your lack of interest in the story, but who the hell cares whether there are any `stars’ in it? Is that really what makes you watch something? That’s pretty sad.
But Brannon Braga is such a genius…
I mean they’ve only had to hire on a bevy of other writer/producers to oversee every facet of the production from script to screen because this guy is inept.
Looks to me like a small-screen version of Avatar, only in the prehistoric past instead of Pandora and without the Na’vi but with Stephen Lang playing the same character. And a time-portal that looks like Stargate. And with 1/10th the budget.
And I’ve hated Braga’s work ever since his horrible “Enterprise.”
if they cant get a pilot done in all this time, how are they gonna do a weekly series….?
Last year at this time we heard an awful lot about Terra Nova and Lone Star. A year later, we’ve seen two episodes of those shows combined. Estimated studio losses? Gotta be running into the 8 figures.
Well done, Mr. Rice, Mr. Reilly. Way to re-invent the wheel and add corners. Try picking up some TELEVISION next time. The Chicago Code is the only thing that halfway worked for you this year. Why? It’s a TV show.
I see an agenda in this post. I see agendas everywhere. When I re-watched one of my favorite films “Hello, Dolly” on the internet a few weeks ago (netflix RULES), I saw agendas in my favorite scenes. I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore, more FX type stuff than broadcast, but I do know that reorganizing your life, like the main characters in “Hello, Dolly” or your even your company, creates pressures, rivalries and opportunities. Reality TV can be great! But doesn’t always feed the beast up and down the line. Shows like Terra Nova and Lone Star, when they work, can make a company rich for years and years…and YEARS. Idol and Dancing Shows and Undercover Boss definitely pop, but do they pop over the years? What’s the best decision moving forward? A flash in the pan, or a long term goal involving research, misinformation, friends around the lot and a clear end game. It’s good to have goals. It brings you RESPECT.
And Chicago Code just KILLED off that world breaking SB number.
So-so whaddya gonna do now?
@Wow Meat
Reilly/Rice generated a growth hit this year: RAISING HOPE, which if they play their cards right can be as profitable as any half-hour network hit.
Based on the conceot and pedigree I would have ordered Terra Nova as well, but clearly the problemmhas been in the execution, and for that the Chernin company should be held responsible. They fought to get Brannon and they instigated the laying off of other writers in the second half of last year. Since then Spielberg has gotten involved again and you can BET he has story issues with what they came up with while he was directing War Horse in the UK. This delay has nothing to do with VFX–it has to do with the lame and unexciting pilot they’re afraid to air without further overhauls. Would not be surprised to see Brannon exit in May so they can bring in another hack like Michael Green or Jesse Alexander.
CG looks like CG. Only time it has ever blended truly seamlessly was way back at the beginning, with Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. But it never looks “real,” so why do they bother tinkering? Other than it being a silly excuse, that is. But, hey, since they keep postponing this, maybe they could hire Julie Taymor as a director. I hear she’s available. They could do a simultaneous Terra Nova/Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark premiere, since both will be ready at the same time.
If they need all this time to get the ‘elaborate’ effects work ready to the degree the air dates are all over the place then how in the hell will they be able to achieve them IF the show ever made to a production schedule and WEEKLY airing?
I don’t quite buy that as the reason.
But it hardly matters perhaps, it seems to have disaster written all over it.
It’s called stepping over the dollars to pick up the pennies.
They could have made the show in Hawaii but some moron thought they could make it cheaper in Australia.
They could have used the tried and true 35mm film method but some imbecile thought that digital would be cheaper. Its not.
They could have made the show under a Screen Actors Guild contract but some stupid vindictive idiot thought they could save a little by using the more “compliant” AFTRA.
The show started out with three strikes against it, there is no way it will every be a sucessful series. Terra Nova is cursed.
