At FX’s upfront party in New York, which is going on right now, the network’s president John Landgraf announced a third-season renewal for Archer. The animated comedy has received a 16-episode order, with three episodes slated to run behind It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia in the fall and the rest airing in early 2012.
Additionally, FX is planning to expand its current portfolio of five comedy series. A sixth half-hour series will launch in early 2012, with Townies as a strong candidate. The animated comedy was created by three It’s Always Sunny writers: David Hornsby and Scott Marder & Rob Rosell. It centers on two earnest yet misguided 15-year-old best friends who have no parental supervision, and they are left to raise themselves through the most awkward years of their lives.
More intel from the FX event courtesy of TVLine’s Matt Mitovich: On the drama side, where FX suffered recent setbacks with Terriers and Lights Out, the network plans to launch a new hourlong series in the fall, “likely” Ryan Murphy-Brad Falchuk’s American Horror starring Connie Britton, which is now casting the pilot. Another new drama series will premiere in the winter, with pilots Outlaw Country and Powers in the running. (The Nashville-set Outlaw Country was delivered some time ago, while Powers, based on the comics, is yet to go into production.) Coincidentally, both pilots are directed by Michael Dinner.
The renewal of Archer comes on the heels of the official pickup of another sophomore FX series, drama Justified, earlier today.

Awesome news!
no talk shows? thought fx would get into the late night game
Thank you, F/X for renewing my favorite animated tv show, Archer ! !
Holy shit snacks!
H Jon Benjamin makes everything funnier. It’s a scientific fact.
Don’t you mean Coach McGuirk makes everything funnier?
Uh…let’s get it straight. FX didn’t suffer setbacks with Terriers and Lights Out…Terriers and Lights Out suffered setbacks with FX.
Archer is my gross out, laugh out loud appointment TV. “That’s how you get ants.”
Sploosh!
Totally Ninja!!!
Wait, I had something for this.
If there were no God, would FX have renewed Archer??? Hmmm???
i know fx has been looking for a companion to archer. i think Townies definitely sounds like has potential. I did think that Townies were the people who stayed in town and didn’t go to college…not high schoolers living in a town, but whatever…it’s all semantics i guess. Not sure if I would call it a companion piece, but definitely an interesting and fresh concept. i hope these somewhat newcomers can turn it into another hit for fx, and that it makes it past the pilot.
@ Chandler: Preach.
Bring back Terriers, change the name.
Going by the title alone, Outlaw Country sounds like something inspired by Justified. That show rocks so I’m all in.
And talking fx, I’m looking forward to Wilfred. I think that has a lot of promise
Gonna second JB in that fx should bring Terriers back. Heck I’d like to see them continue Lights Out. Patrick keeps breaking the law, I’d like to see where that leads him. Still I’m hoping for a bad ending for him this tuesday
Townies should be an absolutely hit with the 3 writers from Sunny in Philadelphia creating it. Can’t wait to see it.
FX has so much of my favorite programming. It’s kind of ridiculous. Archer, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Justified and Sons of Anarchy. That’s more of my favorites than any other channel has and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one fanatical about these shows. Which is part of why this contract dispute between DirecTV and Fox is so serious for DirecTV customers. They’re almost certainly going to be losing FX, NatGeo, Speed and a bunch of regional sports networks come November 1st. Although I don’t have to worry about it, being an employee and subscriber of DISH Network I know my company has a long term contract with Fox, I can’t help but feel kind of bad for those DirecTV customers who are going to be affected by this.
