In a pre-emptive strike, GK Films has come on board to acquire the feature film rights to TOMB RAIDER and will reboot the successful action-adventure franchise aiming for a 2013 release for the first film.
Produced by Graham King and Tim Headington, the films will create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.
GK Films acquired the film rights from interactive entertainment company, Square Enix Ltd. In Dec 2010, Square Enix subsidiary, Crystal Dynamics, revealed a new game for TOMB RAIDER based around the origins of the Lara Croft story.
“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the TOMB RAIDER phenomenon,” said King.
The original game was published in 1996 by the London based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. Today Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics), is part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix and the stage is set for this new chapter in TOMB RAIDER history.
A pop culture phenomenon, the original TOMB RAIDER games have sold over 35million game units worldwide and Lara Croft, along with Mario Brothers is the most recognized name in gaming history.
Starring Angelina Jolie, Paramount Pictures made two movies based on the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions in 2001 and 2003. They grossed a total of $432m at the worldwide box office.

GK Films? what is that, some straight-to-DVD production company?
Isn’t that the same company that produces Scorsese films…..oh right, straight to dvd!!!!!
Not if you count “Rango”, “The Town”, “Hugo Cabret” and “The Tourist” as straight to DVD productions. What GK films hopefully will be doing is getting a descent script together, unlike the first two Tomb Raider installments.
Wowza. But nobody can ever fill out that costume or encompass that role the way Jolie did. Good thing King is so cozy with Angelina these days, maybe he can convince her to make a cameo.
I think Summer Glau has the ability to take the role. She has played two of the more iconic role in recent sci-fi history (River Tam in Firefly and Cameron in TSCC); she already have a cult following but is also very underrated imo.
She has the the porcelain-fine features requested for the role as well as the capacity to be the anchor of a massive franchise?

Here you can find everything about the brilliant actress Summer Glau’s work from shows/movies like Firefly/TSCC/Serenity. We have tons of pictures/fanart. Summer Glau Rules!
Summer Glau : A gorgeous, talented actress who happens to have played two of the more iconic roles in recent Sci Fi history likes to geek it up as much as the next nerd.
Summer Glau has all the right stuff to play Croft.
Summer Glau is a brilliant actor and is ready to do the stunts required for Tomb Raider without cutting away to a double.
She is also a graceful and beautiful woman

Bring Angelina back!!
Who is the front runner to be Lara?
Is Tomb Raider still relevant? Even the Halo movie would be more recent.
Yeah, whatever..
Halo’s been done – it’s called District 9 and Battle for L.A.
Calling Megan Fox’s agents…
She is lacking two vital characteristics-
A lack for talent -
Any star power whatsoever-
Tomb Raider was successful because of Angelina Jolie. I saw the films back then only to see Angelina since she was at the time pretty exciting to watch on screen. I didn’t know Tomb Raider was based on a video game and cannot see any actress today being a credible action star.
There are thousands of actresses out there, and it’s a good probability that at least one or two of them could be good action stars. The video game probably helped butts in seats just as much as Angelina did. Unless you’re a casting director with a proven track record and you know every bankable actress out there, your comment is just ignorant.
I meant, “The video game probably helped put butts in seats…”
reboot my soul while you’re at it, hollywood dementors. no original idea goes unpunished.
BBBOOORRRRIIINNNG!!!
This is going to be very hard to cast, where are they going to find a women in Hollywood with unnaturally large breasts and vacant eyes to play Lara Croft?
LOL
Congress needs to outlaw reboots, remakes, reimaginings. If Congress won’t act then Obama needs to do it by executive order. If he won’t do it then it’s going to take something more forceful like a nuclear bomb on a countdown timer up by the Hollywood sign. If one more reboot is announced the bomb goes off. If all reboots aren’t immediately scrapped the bomb goes off. The bomb will remain there for the next fifty years to stop this madness. It won’t be possible to disarm this nuke any attempt to disarm it will set it off. That’s what’s going to be needed to stop this stupidity. Spend money on original films please or the bomb goes off.
Jack Bauer could disarm the nuclear bomb. And guess what? Jack Bauer is being rebooted the 24 movie is going to star Channing Tatum. I hope that won’t trigger the bomb?
We can stop going to see these movies altogether…they would be their own box office “nuclear bomb.”
Why bother? Angie made the best Lara Croft anyways.
call Jill Wagner!!!!!!
who says there’s not another Angie out there waiting to be discovered
Gk Films a dvd company……I guess making scorsese films is only for dvd…
Since Angelina Jolie has no interest in returning, I guess (if they actually try to take a flim adaptation seriously) they could get someone like Olivia Wilde. Either way, it’s hard to replace Jolie since this was “her” role. Especially with someone like Meagan Fox. Fox is better suited to fill her shoes in a “Wanted” sequel. Not this.
Sorry but Megan Fox is not a credible action hero in any movie. Have you seen her Armani underwear adds? She weighs about 80 lbs. She could punch a baby in the face with all her might and it would not hurt the baby. She jump off a single step and her brittle legs might break when she hits the ground.
The only people who could stomach paying money pretending to believe she could kick anyone’s ass (besides her boyfriend Brian Austin Green) are a few 11 and 12 year old fanboys.
Oh wait. Never mind. According to Hollywood those boys are the only people who exist and the only people to make movies for so obviously she is the perfect choice. Carry on…
It’s not Lara Croft with Angelina. Seriously. She owned that role that there’s not an actress that can shake the memory. I think the producer should think about making the script juicy enough to lure Jolie back into the hot pants and guns?
I’m going to save everybody some time. The perfect Lara Croft is……
Gemma Arterton
She “fits” the role.
should be Kristin Kreuk
I share the sentiment of ‘not another reboot’ but it’s a sound commercial decision. First, it’s an ‘origins’ story meaning it’ll feature a young star or up and comer, ala Andrew Garfield replacing Tobey in Spiderman; second, the presumed target audience of tweens, teens and young 20′s were either not born in 2001, too young to have seen it or young enough to feel nostalgic about it.It won’t be easy to fill Angelina’s shoes and it is an iconic role for her, but that audience probably thinks of her–if they think of her at all–as an old lady with a bunch of kids! So, I get it. Don’t like it, but I get it. And to the person asking who GK Films is–get with the program. As other posters have mentioned, it’s Graham King’s company (get it–GK)He is one of the most successful producers out there. Look him up
The industry has now devolved into a parody of itself.
Actual storytelling in Hollywood is dead and in fact is treated with open disdain. Most of us have read the Mark Harris piece in Esquire announcing the death of original storytelling in Hollywood, but announcements like this prove the situation is actually much worse.
Sad but true.
If they cast Mila Kunis, that would really piss off Angie.
I’d like to see Leighton Meester step into this role (considering she’s the only one that can add weight and comedy to GG).
Meester? “Weight”? Really?
She’s got as much weight as cotton candy. And half the nutritional value.
My vote’s for Olivia Wilde. Tron proved she can do action. Plus she’s sexy.
Isn’t this why market research exists? To figure out that this is a bad idea *before* the press release goes out?
I can’t think of anyone who would actually want to go see this. The desire evaporated after the first film.
Now we’re ten years later and the games aren’t nearly as big as they once were.
Can’t really see the rationale behind this.
When will Hollywood give us the reboot everyone is clamoring for? A ‘reimagining’ of 1996′s Space Jam with LeBron, visually supervised by Roger Deakins. Come on people!
