Glee’s Ryan Murphy, who was Sony Pictures and Will Smith’s choice to direct Willow Smith in the re-imagining of the Broadway musical Annie, has dropped out of contention. Talks broke off and he’s not doing the film, I’m told. The project was recently set at Sony Pictures by Overbrook Entertainment partners James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith in the joint venture they formed with Jay-Z to generate films. Willow, who is Smith’s daughter, will play the lovable orphan.

It seems you have no clue on what you just said. Over Brook has been around a long time — many, many years before one of Will Smith’s kids started acting in an Over Brook Production.
Well, obviously it means that Will can take a break from making such stirring cinema as Men In Black 3 and the oft-rumoured Bad Boys 3 and get the kids to go out and earn cash for the family coffers along the way.
The fact that there are better kid actors out there and the girl’s hair song was diabolical doesn’t matter. They still make dough at the end of the day.

This movie will make a bazillion bucks and introduce the story to a whole new generation.

They will bring in a music video director but it’ll be Will’s movie he’ll tell the director what he wants. Will should direct this himself he has the ability but not the self-discipline to direct this so he’ll be the power behind the director’s chair. Would Willow throw a temper tantrum if this doesn’t happen? Damn you daddy you promised me I could be Annie in a real movie!

My kids are 4 and 7 and already know the story. It’s easy to find on DVD. They do not need to be introduced to it via the spoiled Smith kids.
This movie just got marginally less god-awful. I hope it’s a trainwreck.
If people want to make another version of Annie, that’s fine by me. Black, White, Asian, whatever. But if you are going to “update” the songs (which is inevitable, right?), then, please don’t call it Annie, ok?
This isn’t a remake of a film that happened to have music in it.
This is a stage musical that was made into a film that is now being remade into another movie entirely.

@both i was out of line to say ginger, too much watching southpark, but to me annie is white with red hair and freckles, its a classic movie how it is, as far as will smith and family why remake it, and besides i’m mexican i would say the same if a latina child was cast. On a side note what did yall think when the goerge lopez show (which had good ratings) was cancelled for the geico caveman show which only lasted about 4 episodes?
