EXCLUSIVE: HBO has optioned the book Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency by Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Barton Gellman for a miniseries to be executive produced by Paula Weinstein.
The mini, which will be based on the bestselling book and the FRONTLINE documentary The Dark Side, tells the story of Richard Bruce Cheney from his early days as Donald Rumsfeld’s protégé in the Nixon administration, to the nation’s youngest Chief of Staff under President Ford, to serving as Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush, through two controversial terms as Vice President under President George W. Bush. According to the producers, the project will center on Cheney’s “single-minded pursuit of enhanced power for the Presidency (that) was unprecedented in the nation’s history.”
Rick Cleveland (Six Feet Under), who shared a writing Emmy with Aaron Sorkin for NBC’s White House drama The West Wing, is writing the mini, produced by Spring Creek Prods. in association with WGBH/FRONTLINE and Fair Catch Prods. Spring Creek’s Paula Weinstein and Jeffrey Levine, FRONTLINE’s David Fanning and Michael Kirk and Fair Catch Prods.’ David Kennedy are executive producing.
This is the second HBO longform project about prominent Republican party figures announced in the past few weeks. The pay cable network also has greenlit Game Change, a Jay Roach-directed movie, which follows John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign from his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election. Julianne Moore has been cast as the former Alaska governor.
Weinsetein has executive produced 2 Emmy-winning HBO mini about major political events/figures: the 2008 Recount, about the 2000 Florida recount, and the 1995 Truman. She is also exec producing HBO’s upcoming Too Big To Fail, about the 2008 financial meltdown. On screen, Cheney was most recently portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss in Oliver Stone’s W.

Once again as in ‘Reagan’ the pro-Democrat media is trying all out to make Republicans look bad – is there anyone who think that this will be anything other than biased nonsense? From “PT-109″ to “Reagan” the pro-Democrat media wants to make Republicans look bad and Democrats look good. Kennedy got run over by a Japanese destroyer for heavens sake, and they made him look good! Of course, when it came to Kennedy, all it took was one objection and a fully filmed production was tossed aside. Fortunately we are on to them….
HBO was great back in the 70′s and 80′s. But really, with today’s technology ala Netflix and $1 Movie vending machine all over the place, who gone to pay big bucks to watch premium movie channels anymore? Notice that ABC hasn’t rerun “The Road to 911?” They protect their own, Greg. I canceled HBO for a number of reasons and this only confirms my decision. I watch fewer television programs and movies every year. The other day we were flipping through channels and unfortunately paused during a rerun of the sophomoric sitcom “My Wife and Kids” starring Damon Wayans. In describing someone on the show, Wayans says “He’s dumb, not BUSH dumb but dumb.” The politics of personal destruction were being shoved down our throats for 8 years across the dial, on the internet, in newspapers and magazines. And who is now calling for civility in public discourse? The progressive left. What a bunch of pathetic hypocrites.
Dick Cheney is an American hero despite what the rabid left would have us believe. So much has been said about this man that is patently false and yet the media machine keeps churning out this pablum for the slackers on the left. If there was an ounce of truth of what this man has been accused of they would have already brought him down by now.
Whats even funnier, is that the empty suit that currently occupies the White House has yet to reverse course on Bush-Cheney policies even though he and his accomplices in the media ran a relentless campaign of disinformation, mis-characterizations and outright lies in order to win the presidency. I hope he stays in Brazil through the summer, plays more golf, makes more NCAA picks and throws more White House dinner parties in the next year or so. Anything to keep him from inflicting more damage and holding this nation hostage from economic recovery.

Right on, Aaron. Very well stated. I’m afraid, however, that the leftists won’t acknowledge the decline that Barry is forcing upon us all until it begins to hit them where it hurts. They can’t think long-term enough to realize that the majority of the horrible policies he’s foisted upon us don’t take effect until after the next election, and then the “sh1t hits the fan.” Many of us already realize we as a nation are in serious trouble; just wait for the other foot to fall if this usurper is elected for another term! Ignorance is bliss for all who continue to support this Community Organizer in Chief.

The reason Dick Cheney is “sullen” is because he has been so incredibly involved in trying to analyze, strategize and keep safe, the worthless among us. He has respectfully and confidently sat by for decades as the criticisms flew – shameful, reckless, immature and ill informed criticisms. He dedicated his skill and intelligence to doing what our government is supposed to do – keep us safe from foreign and domestic enemies. LEAVE THIS GUY ALONE – he has given so much and asked so little in return. I am convinced noone expresses an honest or well informed comment about him. His insight into relevant issues that affect this great country are so far beyond anything HBO or its employees could ever hope to have and they certainly do not have any insight into Dick Cheney.
Thank goodness we had him at the helm as long as we did – he is the only man with b—- that has been there in a long time. There certainly are not any that I can see in there today.We should wish him well with his current medical challenges, conditions which have been a challenge since he was in his 30′s – but he still kept giving to his country. I admire his ability to place these ruthless lunatics in proper perspective in his life and stick by his principles and vaues.

To learn about the ‘real’ Dick Cheney, I recommend a great book written by Stephen F. Hayes and simply entitled ‘Cheney’.
This is great, Bill Maher and the hatchet job they did on Reagan, almost made me cancel HBO. This settles it, no more HBO and I save $20 a month. HBO is a hack for the dem party anyway, all they ever show is Bill Maher, and Al Gore’s Science Fiction powerpoint presentation he won the nobel prize for.
Why doesn’t HBO do an honest portrayal of Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid? The simple answer: Because they know no one would watch it. At least Conservatives admire Cheney. I can’t imagine anyone, even Liberals, admiring those two.
